RE: [LegacyUG] signatures names
I have Norwegian and German ancestors, with the Norwegian being most challenging for the primary name version. My paternal grandfather and his brothers emigrated to the US from Germany and anglicized their names, but I have copies of German documents with the German version. I use the names they used in the US (e.g., Henry) for primary, with the German as AKAs (e.g., Heinrich). For my Norwegian ancestors who emigrated to the US, the names they used here are primary, and the Norwegian names are AKAs. For those who remained in Norway, it is often a coin-flip as to which name is primary and which are AKAs.. Their names were often spelled differently in different Norwegian official parish register events and census records for the same person. For example, a person I know as Jonsen might also be spelled Johnsen (an AKA). In another case, Finkelsen is also spelled Finchelsen and Fengalsen, and he may also be known by the name of the farm he was from (e.g., Finkel Øvsteland). As another example, a daughter of Gunder Torjusen (or Torjussen) might be known by the typical surname of Gundersdatter or by the surname Torjusen - or even by her husband's surname (e.g., Nilsen). As far as signatures go, I agree that some are suspect. I have two versions of one US document, one of which shows a signature for the person and the other his mark. Both are alleged to be official county records. Byrom Wehner Houston, TX *** Give the gift of Legacy for the holidays! RE: [LegacyUG] Birth/Death locations
I have two cases in my family, one where a relative was born at sea and another where the relative died at sea. I have the birth as Aboard ship at sea, Atlantic Ocean. The death is shown as Aboard ship at sea, near Bahia state of Brazil, Atlantic Ocean. The cause of death was yellow fever, and Brazilian authorities would not allow the ship in port. I don't know the vessel name in either case. In cases similar to yours, I would probably name the body of water and the best location near the accident site (near ...), if available. If the lake or river was entirely within one state, province or country, I would show the appropriate name. Causes might be shipwreck, drowning, etc. Byrom Wehner Houston, TX -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, November 27, 2006 2:59 PM To: Legacy Subject: [LegacyUG] Birth/Death locations I would appreciate knowing how others cite a birth or death location when the event happened on a body of water. Other than a few relatives who were reportedly born/died on steamships headed to the US, I am particularly referring to accidents on lakes/rivers. I have considered the embarkation port, the name of the lake, the state to which the lake is contiguous or the area where most of the bodies washed up. I have been unable to locate death certificates or burial locations for about 6 people, and I don't want to add the name of the steamship to the location field. I can always add notes in the events or cause of death field, but the actually location has me stymied. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
