Re: [LegacyUG] Warning, Storage Disks
To Gary, Jeff & Keith, I want to thank each of you for responding. My problem has been fix. There was nothing wrong with the HD or the files/folders I saved on it. I don't know how to explain what the reason was that when I opened the HD drive I saw a blank screen. A family member who knows computers far more than me connected this HD to his computer & all that I saved on it was there. He then opened my computer did some things? to it & reconnected this HD & it now works fine on my computer. Everything thing I saved is there. Yeah! No, what I saved were not originals files but my backups of. And again thank you, all of you, for all your suggestions & advice. [LegacyUG] Warning, Storage Disks
Hi I apologize, this is nothing to do with Legacy but there has been discussions several times on safe places to store your Legacy files. What I am about to tell you is what I just experience with my external hard drive that I thought was safe enough for all my genealogy files. After reading many messages about the storing of our genie stuff here on this list I went & bought one, some time ago. I stored some folders & files. Have not been in it since, either to add or to delete. It had been plugged in all this time, never disconnected, otherwards have not touch it. I decided to do some housecleaning on my computer, rearrange stuff, delete old files, etc. I went to look into this external hard drive to see what I had put there & to my shock... saw absolutely NOTHING! It was totally empty! Somehow, someway this machine deleted itself of everything I put on it. I do not know how it did this but it did on its own. I am proof it can happen with an external hard drive so be aware. I am so sick over this for I have no idea what I did put in it, I trusted it to do it's job & did not make a note of what I put in it. Off list, if anyone has any insight of what could of caused this I would very much like to hear from you. I know I can never recover what I lost, I still like to learn why it did happen, if possible. Hi Thank you to all for your replies on this. I wasn't sure if I had to download the whole program again or not & I couldn't find anything pertaining to it. I knew I would get an answer by writing to this great list. Have a question about the training videos. When Legacy releases version 7 will new training video's be available at the same time? Trying to decide whether I should hold off spending the $60 for version 6 video or wait for 7 to be release. Decisions- decisions! Again thank you for your wonderful help. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Too Complicated???
Hi Marilea, I am a newbie to Legacy as well. I haven't tried Family Tree Maker but I've tried other free programs & have found Legacy gives you a much better presentation of your family history. Right now I am using the standard (free) version until the new version comes out. Yes this list is 'very' active as you can tell & has many discussions of various features but don't let that scare you. In fact you will learn a lot from it as I have. As well to meet very nice & helpful people on this list. Whether you revert back to FTM is up to you but let me give you a suggestion. Enter as much as you can into Legacy then print it out so you can see what it'll look like & then you can compare it to the program you were using, believe me you won't be disappointed. If only I could get pass being stuck with how to 'source' my sources, which has been a learning curve for me, I would be a happy camper! Good luck & enjoy! What I usually do with other programs I have is, I tell it to make a 'copy' & send it to the drive the external drive is in. Keeping the original on my hard drive & periodically update it. Hi David, Thank you so much for responding & for your step by step instructions. Your right I was totally baffled & the more I read the more I got myself confused. Not only with documenting the sources but also with the clipboard feature. Usually I'm pretty good with this kind of stuff. Again I appreciate your much needed help. [LegacyUG] A True Beginner
Hello List My name is Diane and I just started using Legacy 6, the standard (free) edition, for now. Till 7 comes out. Having used PAF, I decided to try other programs for comparison and I do like Legacy much more. And I hope to stick with it if only I could master how to input my sources! I am having a total mental block on how to begin! I've been reading all (been lurking through the archives for weeks) that I can besides watching the tutorials (that are outdated) and still can't seem to pick it up. I can't for the life of me what to put in or start with the 'Master Source List' or understand the concept of the clipboard. It's all confusing to me. I know from what I've read so far everyone does theirs differently, I find I do need a gentle push in some direction to be able to start with. If there is someone on this list who is Swedish I would so appreciate your help, an example would be wonderful, the correct way to enter the church records (HFL) I've copied from in Genline? Then I can go on to my USA family lines. Is there any other web sites, someone who may have started a site for beginners, other than Legacy's own site? Also where can I go to learn certain lingo's? Such as the meaning of 'splitter & lumper' and a few other abbreviated words? Thank you for any help you may give me, I do appreciate it.
