[LegacyUG] Decendant Report with dates but not places

2009-03-29 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Hi listers,

As the subject says I want to print a descendant report (or chart) with
dates but not places (because it gets too complicated to look at). My
previous program could do it and I use it to visually track which families I
have found the descendants of and which I don't.

Thanks,
Gavin...

RE: [LegacyUG] What's the best way to source a relationship?

2008-10-19 Thread Gavin Nicholson
In addition to what Jessica has written I would add that I assign those
sources against the NAME of the parent. In the book I wrote (pre-legacy) my
opening paragraph was about why I believed that the A and B were the parents
of C. Sometimes it was simply that I obtained their names from a marriage
certificate but others would go into great detail explaining why I believed
it to be true. I was also careful to provide a "measure" of my confidence
(using terms such as probably or possibly etc) as well as provide any
information that conflicted with my hypothesis and why I discounted that
information.

Cheers,
Gavin...

After reading your quandry, and some of the responses, there's
definately no right or wrong way.

Personally, if I am "deducing" information from sources without
actually having a source for the event or information in question, I
would put it as an event (now that I use events) that I've made and
named "Deduction", writing out what I deduced and from what and why. I
then source it to any and all documents that back this deduction up,
as well as attach a source that I've named "Self Deduction", citing
myself as the source, and my thoughts as the detail.

Clear as mudd?

I suggested that via the online form but didn't get a positive reply :-( If
more people want this feature then please submit a suggestion direct to Legacy,
if enough people do it they might add it to the future features!

If you were in England, you could switch to family Historian which has
the facility of enabling you to mark individual 'faces' in a group
photograph and tag them with names. So that when you move the mouse
across the picture, names pop up accordingly. Would love to see that
ability added to Legacy :-)

RE: [LegacyUG] Sourcing the IGI

2008-08-18 Thread Gavin Nicholson
This doesn't appear to work if I am doing it right. If I select "marriage
records" I then have the option of church records, government records or
frakturs. The church records and government records only break down into
certificates, transcriptions, registers or books. Nothing for online
sources. That brings me to the Frakturs that I mentioned in the original
e-mail which has online options (online database for example).

Is this what people are doing though? Is there a best practice when it comes
to quoting the IGI? Should I just select Internet>>Database and be done with
it?!

Thanks for your help,
Gavin...

RE: [LegacyUG] Attaching PDF file

2008-08-17 Thread Gavin Nicholson
It should be noted that the FILE option is only available to deluxe users.
Otherwise, you can work around it by selecting "sound" or "video" and then
selecting the PDF file. The only problem with this is that you have a sound
or video icon for it, however, it does launch your PDF viewer correctly when
you double-click on it.

Cheers,

Gavin.

[LegacyUG] Events/Facts to Multiple People

2008-08-17 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Hello all,

I am a new user of Legacy and I am currently updating my information in the
program. I have been using the source clipboard extensively and it is a
godsend for speeding up multiple entries. I am now looking at my census
information and wondering if there is a way to assign the same event/fact to
multiple people at once or a clipboard system so I can paste in the
identical details quickly. This problem arises for other events such as
residence as well.

Thanks for your help,
Gavin...

Death Cause isn't in the Events list. Use the Notes icon and you will find
it there on the Medical tab.

[LegacyUG] Events differ between "Add events" and "assign sources"

2008-08-12 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Hi listers,

I have just started using this program and I am updating my sources. I
noticed when I was in the "assigned Sources" screen that there was an event
for "Death Cause" and I thought I would add that in. So I assigned a source
to it and went back to the "Individual Information" screen and it wasn't in
the Events/Facts list so I selected "add" but when I dropped down the list
of events "death cause" wasn't there. I added a new one but when I went back
to the "assign sources" screen I now had two "Death cause" entries. Upon
closer inspection the lists of events between the two screens are
significantly different.

So can someone tell me how/why they are different. How are you supposed to
use each screen if they don't directly relate?

Cheers,

Gavin.

RE: [LegacyUG] New User with some questions

2008-08-11 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Thanks Rich,

I totally did not explain that well. I am referring to PDF files. The
website says you can attach "any other kind of document" yet there is no
"document" option only picture, sound and video. Rootsmagic, which I have
also been evaluating, has a "file" option which is much better and would be
perfect if a little thumbnail preview appeared as well rather than a generic
icon.

Gavin...

You said, 'Are they talking about the clunky way of
inserting documents as a movie or sound file?' Not
sure what you mean by that.
Step one move the 'thing' to the hard drive legacy
looks for stuff in.
Step two go to the person it is for.
Click on the little porttrait between notes and
sources.
Click on the category you want.
search through your 'directory tree' to find where it
is staying.
Click on it.
You have now loaded it in, and if you want a different
'look', crop and the other tools are available as many
times as you want.
I happen to like this setup better than my old way,
when having to save small and big with different names
each. but that is me.

[LegacyUG] New User with some questions

2008-08-11 Thread Gavin Nicholson
Hi listers,

I am looking at changing to Legacy as I need a more full featured program as
my research gets more extensive. Legacy looks good although the multimedia
aspects appear lacking. I have two questions:

1. The legacy website states: "Now Attach Any Document to Individuals
and Marriages - Along with attaching pictures, sounds, and video to
individuals, events, locations, and sources, you can now also attach any
other kind of document (PDFs, Word files, etc.)." Are they talking about the
clunky way of inserting documents as a movie or sound file?

2. Is there any talk about improving the handling of photos. Family
Historian has a fantastic feature where you can link to just a part of a
photo and toggle between that part and the whole photo. This means that if
you had a school photo for example then you can toggle between just your
ancestor and the whole photo. I may submit that as a feature request
although it would be handy if you could find out what
has been submitted before. A wish list with voting would be ideal!

Other than the above Legacy appears to do all that I need but better
handling of media would be great as there is so much available these days.

Cheers,
Gavin...
