RE: [LegacyUG] We need an update to fix old problems!
Nice font, Alastair, thanks for pointing it, and that site, out to us! I hadn't been able to find that one free before. It's nice that it has the diaeresis marks for vowels. Did you know Caslon was the font used for the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution? I found that here: http://www.graphic-design.com/Type/Caslon/default.html Teri -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Alastair Lack Sent: Sunday, November 12, 2006 11:58 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] We need an update to fix old problems! Well, I've given up trying to use the publishing centre, and now do everything through rtfs, where one can edit everything to one's heart's content. That's why getting the macros to run for the pictures - reported extensively elsewhere - was so important. I also like to remove the "Joe Bloggs married" or "Joe Bloggs married unknown" sentences that Legacy inserts without evidence whenever a child is listed to a father without its mother being known. I use www.lulu.com as my publisher - a print on demand service that means you don't have to put money up front. It can't take Legacy pdfs as they don't include embedded fonts. So given that some might have fonts they prefer to the standard arial/times they would need to embed them - one needs to create pdfs to send for printing. I do that from the Legacy rtfs, and use http://moorstation.org/typoasis/designers/steffmann/index.htm as a source of superb free old style typefaces. Try Caslon Antique for old documents! [LegacyUG] Best place to attach photos
Hi Listers, I have a question about photos of documents such as birth and death certificates, censuses, WWI draft cards, etc. It seems it is possible to attach these photos to either the master source, source detail, or the event, correct? Is there an advantage, say in reports, to one over another? I've tried it each way with an Individual Report and Family Group Record, and the photo shows up no matter whether it's attached to the sources or the event or all three. Is it that with a photo attached to the master source or source detail, you can have the photo appear at the end of the report, and a photo attached to an event appears in the body of the report only? I haven't tried doing a slideshow. I wonder if the photo would show up repeatedly (for each family member) if it was attached to an event instead of a source? Opinions? Suggestions? Thank you! RE: RE: [LegacyUG] Paid Genealogy Search Sites
If there are any Kansas users, apply for a Kansas library card. Then you can access Heritage Quest, from your own computer, for free! Maybe other states do this too? I subscribe to Ancestry.com for US research but I have access through my library with myy card to Ancestry.com library edition. There are other electronic resources available this way also. But Heritage Quest is not one of them. If you can, sign up for Ancestry.com monthly until you decide if you like it enough to purchase an annual subscription. Believe me, it is well worth it. Ancestry.com gets very expensive on a monthly basis though. Family Search and RootsWeb are free, but I like Family Search the best between the two. I think you can sign up for Genealogy.com for a month at a time also. So take your pick and enjoy the ride!!! RE: [LegacyUG] Please Stop Sending HTML messages to the List
I just checked my settings and I have a choice of plain text, rich text or HTML. I'm currently on rich text. Does that bother as much as HTML or is it okay? Teri -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Paul C. Abell Sent: Wednesday, October 18, 2006 8:42 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Please Stop Sending HTML messages to the List In many cases, people using Windows based software usually default to HTML. In some cases, people probably don't realize they are sending messages in HTML or don't know how to change it. Many people that are not what I would call "computer savvy" just may not know there is a difference and may not know what someone is referring to when discussing HTML. I try to remember to watch and change it, but frankly, I don't mind if my messages come to me in HTML or plain text. Either one if fine with me. The amount of HTML messages to the list are getting ridiculous. I don't know which is worse, the font that is so small one needs a magnifying glass to read it, or the the messages that people feel compelled to use a either a colored font or a huge bold font. I beleive you could send out 20 requests a day asking people to refrain from using HTML and they are just not going to comply, whether by choice or lack of knowledge. If HTML messages were blocked like they are on rootsweb's mailing lists, then folks would be forced to either send a plain text message or they would not be able to participate on the list. RE: [LegacyUG] Entering source details
Jeff said, "I hear you Ron and you make excellent points. However, I would counter that without a suggested entry path, you will have data entered one way here and another way there and sometimes even duplicated in both. My memory is not as good as yours because without prompts I cannot always remember exactly how or where to enter this or that data if there is no clearly suggested path. End result, is that the data does get recorded - which is good - but reports have the data spread all over everywhere and who know what happens to the gedcoms later created by Legacy. Actually I agree with you that census is not really an "event". I decided to enter it as such because that is how it is used in the "sample file" and I though it would help with the chronology view, as well as ensuring I entered all the details 'somewhere'. Now I am not so sure - which makes my point: a user should not have to discover logical entry paths from scratch when a few guidelines would suggest a logical way to do something and avoid a lot of unnecessary rework. and, "Yes, although I am very experienced at genealogy, I am very new at using Legacy and the entry of sources is awkward and prone to error for new users. It does not need to be that way." Liz said, "I have to agree with you there. I am a new user to Legacy and have spent ages inputting all the census data into events, or certificate details into say Marriage notes, Death certificate into death notes - I had failed to understand about the source details. I have been reading odd things about this and am now thinking I have been doing it wrong. Any guidance would be much appreciated before I do more data entry." -- Hello all, I am new to both genealogy and to Legacy. I downloaded the free trials of several programs and Legacy seemed to be the best fit for me. I had made up my mind that I didn't want to enter any sources or events until I thoroughly understood how to do it "right" so I wouldn't have to redo hundreds of entries. For that reason I ordered the deluxe package that included the events and sources training videos, and just happened to watch them last night. I thought I had this all figured out based on Geoff's training. I was all ready to get started today but now I'm terribly discouraged, frankly. I have a good understanding of how everyone must figure out a workflow that fits them. Here is what concerns me though. I'm enjoying genealogy as a new hobby, but for me and most people it's far more than that. I want to get it "right" because I want to pass it on! I feel a kind of "big-picture" responsibility for those who will use the data I'm creating. I really do want to know how this "Event" and "Sourcing" issue works in a gedcom, and how these entries show up in reports when you enter them one way or another. If there is a "best practice" method that transfers better into and out of a gedcom than other methods, and looks most consistent in reports, then that's the way for me. Is there a website or guide sheet that shows we Legacy newbies that, perhaps with templates? Is there a place to see examples of how these entries will look in reports based on entering them different ways? Shouldn't there be a Standard that works best for gedcoms based on what will and won't transfer out of and into Legacy? I thought the sample file and videos could be relied on but now I'm quite confused again.
