Re: [LegacyUG] Return Receipts

2008-01-13 Thread curious
Good advice but if you are like me - Legacy Forum is a very small percentage
of my contacts.

When posting to Legacy, just before sending in Outlook Express, I prefer to
click Format, then Plain Text' - that way it leaves my
normal email in Rich Text for all my other contacts.

Cheers,
Boris

We should always post to Legacy in plain text regardless whether

Re: [LegacyUG] PHotos

Yes, the painful problem of organization. there is no solution that fits all
conditions.

I found in my filing designs, that I was most successful when starting from the
end, that is - How will I be looking for the object when needed. by year, or by
surname, or by event, etc., and then setup the directories accordingly.

For example our traveling photos, over 40,000, are setup by year.
Our Legacy photos are setup by surname and then by name in sub-directories -
that method matches the Legacy organization.

It works for me. Cheers,
Boris

Thank you all for your input! My biggest problem is the organization. I
have pictures EVERYWHERE on two computer and a back up hard drive.
Graphics, cropping etc is not the issue as I use Dreamweaver and Fireworks
for doing web sites so I am OK with that. I just want to be able to find
  my family pics easily ;-)

Re: [LegacyUG] mysterious photos

2007-12-28 Thread curious
There appears to be some confusion in the statement 300 pixels wide and 200
dpi

Any image 300 pixels wide is just that, 300 pixels in any format.

DPI (dots per inch) is a function of the print program:
- If you set the print at 300 dpi, you end up on paper with an image 1 inch wide
- If you set the print at 100 dpi, you end up on paper with an image 3 inches
wide

The file image stored in your hard drive remains a 300 pixels wide picture.

Boris

To recap: all my photos linked into Legacy are tiff's, 300 pixels wide
and 200 dpi. Why do they show up different sizes in html and pdf
  descendants reports?

HTML documents are intended for a screen (72 to 96dpi).

PDF documents are intended for a printer (300dpi or higher).

300 pixels on the screen make a 3 inch (or larger) image.

300 pixels on the printer make a 1 inch image.

Use a program such as Polyview to make JPEG copies of all the TIFF files,
then link to the JPEG instead of the TIFF.

Web browsers are capable of doing rescaling of JPEG files.

Re: [LegacyUG] Moving Photo locations

2007-11-01 Thread curious
If one goes to the trouble of resizing, I would suggest one more step...
renaming all the pics to fit into one folder only (well, maybe 2 or 3).

Instead of having folders and sub-folders make those names part of the file
name, with incremental numbers for people in the same family,e.g.,

Pearce_John_A01
Pearce_John_A02
Pearce_Leo_A03
...

Pearse_Cole_Adam_01
Pearse_Cole_Adam_02

Or any name-numbering scheme to your liking. The point is, the families are
together, they are all in one folder and moving, backup, and crashes are easy
to fix. Renaming can be done using batch processing for each folder, then
merge all... et voila.

Cheers,
Boris

I've been through this and have 1 suggestion 1 comment.

First, if you have not already made a smaller byte version of pictures for
Legacy, this is a good time to do it. I disregarded the advice to do this
many pictures ago and eventually got to when books reports with pictures
were such large files that I couldn't zip them small enough to send
ancestor reports via e-mail to cousins.

Second, like Jay I use a lot of folders for pics which make sense to me.
This means moving to a new drive made for a lot of work. I found that
using the function to check picture paths was a lot of help as I got close
to finishing - and made sure nothing was inadvertently skipped.

[LegacyUG] Baby Webs Genealogy

2007-10-21 Thread curious
Everyone here is here because they have been bitten by the genealogy bug and
most are trying to do it by-the-book. Depending on your objectives, it may be
alright to stray a bit and introduce your own wrinkles.

Legacy has the ability to create web pages and these can be burned onto a CD to
pass along. they do not have to be viewed of a website. With my daughter's
help we eventually developed a style which is more akin to Family History,
introducing events and documents in a format which raises interest in our
grandchildren, as you know, a very tough audience to please.

Those interested can view a small sample (with many links and exhibits) on my
website here:
