RE: [LegacyUG] Charting recommendations

2007-04-30 Thread Sherril Dysart
I once printed a pedigree chart using Family Tree Maker that was taped
together and then taken to a blueprint business where it was printed on a
plotter. They enlarged it 3X the original size so it turned out a whopping
3 feet high and 18 feet long! It was wonderful because the fonts enlarged
to about an inch high. It was easy to read and allowed for folks to study
it and add corrections/additions via post it notes. The nice thing was it
only cost me $5.

Sherri

The charting deficiencies are exasperating. I wish they would team up with
AutoCAD to create some software that would allow much more to be done in
this area. The charts and trees are probably the most popular keepsakes at
family reunions. I think there's a big demand for these.

At our last family reunion I used Charting to generate a part of our family
tree. It came out to 11 pages that I taped together and hung on the wall.
The font was microscopic, so it was of limited use. And it wasn't possible
to move things around. The rolls of paper that plotters used could generate
sheets as long as anyone could want.

I agree, I would like something a little more flexible, that does regular
and fan trees, but I'd prefer it to be incorporated with the regular
software. I'd be prepared to pay a little extra for it but I don't really
want a astand alone program unless I absolutely have to - I'm sure my early
gen prog - Generations had built in charting, but its so long ago I can't
remember.

Mel, I've used Legacy Charting Companion and TreeDraw for Legacy. I like
them both for different reasons, but as single programs go they don't
provide everything I'd like to see. As a suggestion, work out what you'd
like to see and check out different programs that will provide what you are
looking for.

This business about lack of good trees in Legacy comes up every once in a
while and I hope Legacy programmers are listening. Fortunately my family is
easy
to manage over to FTM, like so many others to take advantage of their trees.
Mac's Reunion is also a good one, but then one needs another computer.

I have resisted buying the companion charting addons for Legacy,
partly because my tree is too large for me to print off properly, and
partly because I got confused as to which one to buy. Can anyone
suggest which one works best with Legacy " itTs my only disappointment
with the Deluxe Legacy that it doesnTt have good standard tree type
charts (fan, pedigree, or regular anscestor charts) Is there one that
is a cut above, and that works seamlessly with Legacy?
