Re: [LegacyUG] Date Range for an Event and General Event Questions

2009-01-04 Thread Leon Chapman
Alan:

You basically can do whatever you want depending on the information you have
available.
Many times you only have a Census date to define the Resident event in which
you would only use one date. If you have the beginning and ending dates of
a resident event, then you should probably use them or at least put them in
the notes for the event.

Here is an example that I use for myself:

Event: Residence
Description: 1234 Main Street
Date:1 Oct 2004-1 Jul 2005
Place: Somewhere, Good Co, WY, USA

I also do the same for Occupation events.

If you have the beginning and ending dates, I would certainly document them
either in the Date field of the event or the Event Notes field.

Hope this helps.

I am thinking of examples of like Residence: July 1, 1950 - September 4,

I don't like just entering a starting or ending date of a residence.
Especially if the previous or subsequence residence may not start right
before or after the other one. i.e The next residence known could start at
January 4, 1960. So there are several months in between where residence is
 not known.

Other examples of this might be Education, Employment, Military Service,
 etc...

 2. On a related note does anyone know where I could find a good
description of the intent of some of the events that come by default in
Legacy or what other suggested events people sometimes add? Any good web
 sites?

Re: [LegacyUG] Date Range for an Event and General Event Questions

2009-01-03 Thread JLB
If the training videos say a date range is a bad practice, surely they
suggested a good practice? Or maybe you're supposed to put the end dates
in the Notes section? I was doing some passenger lists the other day,
and putting the landing date in the date field and then putting into
Notes the name of the ship sailing from where on such and such a date.
I have, though, put a range of dates in the Date field for military
service and I'm sure other things. Some people are very particular
about how they want things printed out in reports but I don't worry
about it too much. Obviously, I don't know what 'correct' is in this
instance. Maybe somebody wrote an official book on it. ;-)

Alan,

Using Between is a perfectly valid date. Rather than using the Help Files, in
this case see OptionsCustomiseDates to set as you wish.
