Re: [LegacyUG] Importing Picture Negatives into Legacy 7

2008-10-16 Thread Pat
The Infanview program looks very good . I will also try out the
Studio-Line program to see which of these programs works best with my
printer/scanner (and provides the best picture).

Thank you both for the prompt, very helpful suggestions.

As has been mentioned, download Irfanview (totally free) and open the
image in it. On the toolbar select Image > negative and save the new
image. Done. Easy. Free.

Re: [LegacyUG] Importing Picture Negatives into Legacy 7

2008-10-16 Thread JLB
I assume this writer has a very old flat-bed scanner. Mine is fairly old
(5 years) and works up to 3200 dpi and handles negatives as well. Color
slides scanned at 1200 dpi are plenty big enough. Small negatives are
the same size. I've rarely used anything except Adobe Elements in
conjunction with this scanner and turning negatives, B&W or color, has
worked fine.

Be aware that most flat-bed scanners have much less resolution than a

start at 1800 dpi and go up to 3600 dpi or higher.

If you have large negatives (2 1/4 inches square or the like) then a
flat-bed scanner at 600 dpi or higher may produce a usable positive image.

If the negatives are black and white, almost any of the free graphics
programs (IrfanView, for example) can do the negative to positive
conversion.

If the negatives are color, then the graphics program must be able to
subtract out the orange base color of the negative material to create a
proper positive image (probably starts with the lower end versions of
PhotoShop).

This is from experience - I have an 1800 dpi scanner for slides and 35mm
negatives and a 1200 dpi (optical resolution) flat-bed scanner for
documents and larger negatives.

I have some really old negatives that I wish to convert to a picture
positive image and import into Legacy 7.
Do any of you folks know of a good graphics program I can use to convert
picture negatives (using my scanner) to positive picture images?

I bought a scanner which would handle negatives (needs to shine a light
through
rather than reflect off) and the scanning software does an automatic
convert.
