Regardless of "accepted", the mixed case nature of some spellings makes it
important to me to have the actual case:

If all your surnames are "single capital" spellings, then using all caps
won't be misleading.

Does this mean that the 'accepted method' of entry for surnames is in mixed

Phil,

You need to look in the standardisation tab and uncheck the box "Surnames in
Upper Case"

HI

I have just received V7 and am very happy with it. However I have a small
problem with generating Potential Problems Reports. I prefer to have my
surnames all in upper case and have set this in preferences. (Incidently, I
set this in the the new set up procedure that appears on installation but it
didn't seem to stiick.) Now when I generate a problem report it shows the
potential problems I know about, but also flags every entry as a problem
with the reason 'surname all in uppercase'. I expect I am doing something
silly here, but I can't see what. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Re: [LegacyUG] V7 Potential Problem Reports

2008-06-08 Thread Tracy Skegg
Ahhh, I enter surnames in all capitals, prefer them for my reports.
Was wondering why I got the should use mixed case pop up at me. I
knew about the Options>Customise check box for all capitals, but not
about the potential problems. Thanks for sharing.

I don't believe this, I spent I don't know how long changing surnames
to Mixed Case, didn't like the look of it in reports, so I started
changing them back. I have just set the Options>Customise to
UPPERCASE, it changed the hundreds of my surnames to uppercase in two
seconds flat. Yay Legacy, pity I didn't know about it before. I'm
going to have to play some more and uh read the manual :-)
Cheers

Re: [LegacyUG] V7 Potential Problem Reports

2008-06-08 Thread Dede Holden
Phil,

I was curious about your question, so I've done a little investigating.

First of all, I suspect that you have probably ENTERED all your
surnames as capital letters. I have entered mine normally, but choose
to let Legacy convert them to all caps for reports. If that is the
case, then you need to click on the Standardization tab of the
Potential Problems report and uncheck the last box, which considers
surnames typed in all caps as a potential problem.

The interesting thing I've discovered is that you can get several
different formats for this report.

If you click "Create Problems List" then you get a list that you can
work with - go to each individual and edit from the list. (Fabulous
feature!)
If you then click "Preview" from that list, you can specify if you
want a detailed, abbreviated, or summary report.
The reports that are generated this way do not have the surnames in
all caps, since I did not enter them that way.

However, if I click Preview directly from the initial Potential
Problems Report screen (not create list or view existing list), then
the surnames are in all caps.

Very interesting.

Thanks for prodding me to do a little more exploring in V7. I'm very
happy about it, too.

Re: [LegacyUG] V7 Potential Problem Reports

2008-06-08 Thread Cathy

Hi Phil,

Are you entering Surnames in All Capitals or displaying them in All Capitals?

If you are entering them in All Capitals and want to keep doing
that, just turn off the Potential Problem check for that.

Modern practice is to enter Surnames in mixed case and then use the
Software to display and print with All Capitals when appropriate -
See the Format tab in Reports (and web pages??) and Options >
Customise - Data Format Tab for Display

It's up to you.

Re: [LegacyUG] V7 Potential Problem Reports

2008-06-07 Thread Susan Daily
Dede, I enetered all my surnames with Initial Caps, but used the
Options to turn them into All Caps. I ran the potential problems
report and it told me I had surnames all in caps. Well, duh! (heh) So
one would think that with a little extra programming, the potential
problems can check to see if that option has been selected before it
points out the obvious.

I tested this on a copy of my Sample file.

Phil,
I tested this on a copy of the Sample file and can confirm the same result
(I have build 45, ver 7). It seems that potential problem should not be
tested when theat option has been selected in the Data Format tab. I'll
report this as a possible bug.

I, too, prefer my surnames in all caps. One of the “Standardization Tips”
that has popped up with version 7 when I save one of my ancestors says: “You
should used mixed case when entering names. (There is an option in Customize
for showing surnames in all uppercase.)” I doubt that you are doing
something “silly”; I think it is just a reminder that you are doing
something that is considered “out of the norm”.

The Standardization Tips can be turned off by unchecking that box on the
Standardization Tips screen. Another option on that box says “Skip this
warning for this person”, but wow, that would be a great deal of skipping!

Perhaps Cathy, Ron or someone from Millennia knows of a better way.
