It can be any of several things. Creating a new source 'Aunt Mary'(her Gedcom stuff) to add to the whole group, or yourself, or when merging two or more databases, identifying them by a meaningful (to you) name. Michele, I'm going off memory here, but I think the source you are referring to is a source for the compiler of the imported file(s) (eg. yourself). Including this does not change the sources in the imported file but adds what you state to be the source of the import files in the unspecified field for all your sources. Re: [LegacyUG] combining two files
Yes, all your sources will be imported. If you have duplicate people in both databases, Legacy will try to automatically merge those people and the ones is cannot merge it will let you determine whether to merge them. This is why you need to backup your original file before you start this merge process. I would not recommend using a master source when importing -- that will add a source to everyone in your imported file. Do that in Legacy ahead of time before you import if you want a master source say added to each name field. RE: [LegacyUG] combining two files
When you import all the info and sources are brought in. The option to assign an autosource allows you to say where the data came from. It adds an extra source to the data. I used to ignore this when I imported and only later came to realise how important it was to identify where the data came from. I am now having to go back and retrospectively add the information, a mammoth task :(. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Michele Lewis Sent: Friday, 19 September 2008 5:08 a.m. To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] combining two files Will my entire source list be imported too??? michele - Original Message - From: "ronald ferguson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Thursday, September 18, 2008 11:36 AM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] combining two files Michele, Basically, you need to use File>Export>Legacy and then Import into your file. I think it is pretty standard for all of us to renumber starting from a RIN of 1000, or so, above the last RIN on the retained file.
