I think you have not, then, understood how a mailing list works. The
whole point is that each person submitting a post is, in effect, e-mailing
many people (however many are subscribed) with one post.

Most of us, beginners and more experienced users alike, find that the
majority of messages are of some degree of interest; there are few of us
who cannot learn *something* from another list member at some time or
another and most of us enjoy the "being one of a community" aspect.

I hope you will stick around and join in.

Sure, but how would a computer know if you were interested in a particular
message? I've learned a lot from this list from those answering questions I
hadn't thought to ask.

Sherry ...

Thank you for your response.

That is a shame that there is no option for message receipt selection; I
have no interest in receiving a bunch of messages of no interest.

Take care.

I don't know of any mailing lists that do what you want. This kind of
filtering should be done on your end with your email client.

Only if people reply to you privately. The whole point of mailing lists is the
sharing of information. For busy lists like this one you need to learn how to
use your email program to filter the replies so you can delete that which you
find of no interest.

Re: [LegacyUG] ... usergroup message handling ... Jim Hughes

2008-08-18 Thread John Carter
That depends entirely on the mail program you are using.

Eudora allows you to specify where messages go based on sender, subject,
etc, in various combinations. If you include a unique word/phrase (i.e.,
JIMH) in the subject line, then those messages could be placed in a
specific folder (i.e., MyLegacy) and anything else from the LUG could be
put in the trash. Doing that also means that you will miss any follow-up
messages with a different subject line and all hannuncements from Legacy
because they won't have that word/prase in the subject.

Pegasus mail allows you to retrieve just the headers (Subject & From) and
determine which messages to download and which to delete. This ensures
you will see all the subject lines but will only need to download the
items of interest.

Pegasus is free; Eudora has a free version. Neither is targeted for
malware as Outlook and Outlook Express are.

I think that is a part of your servers job. This is
the culling service which 'avoids' spam, and (some
people have this, but not me), splitting the 'good
stuff' to various 'categories'.
This is not the task of the User Group, but is a good
question none the less. you need to contact
'twmi.rr.com' directly and ask them.
