RE: [LegacyUG] Embarrassed to ask...

2008-12-16 Thread Connie Sheets
I agree with Mary: it is intended to be the date you enter/record the info
into your database. (I suppose as with anything else, you could use it for
something else, though I'd be careful to be sure I was consistent and
documented somewhere how I defined it so others who come along later would have
a clue).

By the way, notice that this field is available not just for census records but
for all sources, and that there is a little button to the right Today's Date
which allows you with one click to enter the date you recorded the info.

I would document the actual date of census enumeration in Event Notes, or as
the Event Date.

Recorded Date - This is the date you recorded the source

... but in the case of a census source, what do you Legacy
 users tend to put
in the Recorded Date field? I see the option
 for Today's Date, but is
that a place where I can put the actual date that the
 census taker took the
 info?

Generally speaking, is the Recorded Date field
a place where I note when
the original researcher (like a census taker or a clerk)
 recorded the
information which I have found? Or is it a place where I
 note when I myself
 took note of the information?

Thanks in advance (and BTW, thanks to all who have answered
 my questions in

Not just for Censuses, but in all instances I used Recorded Date for the
date I recorded the information. There are other fields for recording the
date of the event itself.

RE: [LegacyUG] Embarrassed to ask...

2008-12-15 Thread ronald ferguson

Roxanne,

The answer to this question may depend on other factors such as the country and
the exact day of the census. In England the census is always held over one
night ( I think a Sunday) in each census year, so we can put the specific date
in the Master Source and use the Recorded Date for the date on which we located
the information - that is how I do it anyhow!

I have a feeling that in the States the census can be spread over a period of
time so for lumpers this may not be possible, but still possible for splitters!
This may be another case of do what suits yourself and your way of working best.

RE: [LegacyUG] Embarrassed to ask...

2008-12-15 Thread Roxanne
Ron,

I understand about the census in the US being spread out over time. Indeed, in
my own family, I have census records from November 20 1850 when the official
census date that year was June 1. I do tend to record both dates, putting the
official one in the Master Source Definition.

I think what I am asking is what is the intended function of the Recorded
Date field itself... or is it one of those things that can be whatever you
want it to be?

Thanks Ron,
Roxanne Baird
