Jennifer's solution worked, and now my great uncle is shown as should be.
When I deleted the marriage, the box with "never married" lost its
checkmark, so I had to re-check that box in order that the exclamation mark
would show up on the family group page.

If all else fails, create a fake person, named fake
person, as a spouse. Save file. reopen and unattach,
delete fake person.
