I agree with you. That is why I show the smallest
location I can be sure of, and in notes discuss what
the smaller parts might be. And why I think that.

Thanks Cathy. I will also make sure to trim the tag lines.

I got heck a couple months ago from someone for trimming the message(s) too
much when replying. The person told me it was difficult to follow my replies as
I was trimming the older messages.

Thx!

Hi Ralf,

Sounds like you've been playing with the sort order in the Master
Location list.

I only use input order or right to left.

The other sort orders can be useful if you use the US convention of
four part locations with place holding commas but you're seeing a limitation.

PS Do learn to trim your messages - at least the multiple tag lines.

I have always looked at "of" and "probably" as having two very distinct
meanings. I use "of" to designate a place of residence when an event occurs
such as a marriage - you might not know where he/she was born but one knows
where he lived at the time of a later event. The word "possibly", or
"probably" if you want to add some strength to the situation, is used when I
am making an educated guess as to where the event occurred. Depending on era
and circumstances you can make a decent guess as to birth/baptism from where
he/she lived at the time - not true with contemporary marriages. Some event
notes might be in order for clarification.

Also on the "probably" situation, I use throughout the address. If I have
proof that an individual was born in Illinois but I believe he might well
have been born in Chicago then I enter as , , Illinois (probably Chicago,
Cook County). Same thing if I have proof it is , Cook County, Illinois, then
I might enter , Cook County (probably Chicago), Illinois. I would not use
"probably Chicago, Cook County, Illinois" if I have proof the event was in
Cook County, Illinois as it means (at least to me) you have no proof on any
part of the location.

The word "near" can come into play hear as well - ties down the location a
bit more, such as 'Amite County (near Zion Hill), Mississippi'.

I'm a little late jumping in on this subject but this is what I do.

Since Legacy likes us to put the location in the location field in the
order of: city, county, state, and country and to use commas for missing
compoents, I do this.

If I know someone was from Germany but not where, I would put in the
location field the following:

Another example is a family I know was from Bartholomew County, Indiana,
but not the city, so I put the following in the location field:

This keeps my location database clean but also lets me know I'm missing
information.

Personally, I would read this:
, , , Germany
to mean that I know the person was from Germany, as opposed to it is
highly probable that the person was in Germany for a particular event.

Also, some folks in the plains are just there--in the plains. They are
in a county and possibly a township, but are not in a city. Therefore,
I use:

near Hometown, Green County, Indiana

I appreciate all of the insight that I get by reading this group. It is
wonderful to see all of the sharing going on. Keep it up!

Re: [LegacyUG] "Probably" as part of the locacation (WAS as part of the date)

2007-02-26 Thread Terry Foxcroft
Also, if you research a location and find it to be wrong, it is good to
still provide information as to why it is wrong.

One reason is it makes it easier for someone in the future as they don't
need to redo your research.

Also, I've had times when I've found something wrong, kept it in my file and
noted it as such, and later found it was correct.

all information - known correct and known wrong - is useful

A person without any place is much harder to research later on (which may be
tomorrow, next month, 10 years later, etc.). Some recording that I have
seen (and done earlier in my research years) doesn't even include a likely
country when it's a good bet that 5 generations prior to immigrating to
American the family that spoke German and had German descendants was
probably from Germany. However, if I exclude such info from my database, it
makes subsequent research more time consuming. I need to look at each of
their descendants until I find locations. In addition, if I get to go
somewhere to do some research or have access to a new database, I want a
list of probably locations to nail down.

RE: [LegacyUG] "Probably" as part of the locacation (WAS as part of the date)

2007-02-26 Thread Krones2004
I'm a little late jumping in on this subject but this is what I do.

Since Legacy likes us to put the location in the location field in the order
of: city, county, state, and country and to use commas for missing compoents, I
do this.

If I know someone was from Germany but not where, I would put in the location
field the following:

  , , , Germany.

Another example is a family I know was from Bartholomew County, Indiana, but
not the city, so I put the following in the location field:

  , Bartholomew, Indiana, USA.

This keeps my location database clean but also lets me know I'm missing
information.

2007-02-26 Thread ronald ferguson

They are, Kathie.

I tend not to use angle brackets as they are commonly used by various
websites which offer downloads eg IGI, so I tend to avoid using them. I can
then differentiate between my "abouts" and somebody else's. I use the
nearest area about which I am certain, this could be a city, county or
country.

RE: [LegacyUG] "Probably" as part of the locacation (WAS as part of the date)

2007-02-26 Thread Tom Montgomery

Ralf,

According to couple of books I have on genealogy, the word "OF" is the
genealogical equiv. of Probably. I use the following format:

Of Orem, Utah Co., Utah, USA
Of, Utah Co., Utah, USA
Etc...

Is it preferred to leave a location blank or put in a probable location
"Probably Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada"?

Is there a standard for this? Is there a location (book, webpage, etc) where
standards such as this are listed?

Thx!

there'. When I go back later I do not need to reinvent
the thought processes. When either proved yes or no, I
remove the guess.

RE: [LegacyUG] "Probably" as part of the locacation (WAS as part of the date)

2007-02-26 Thread Glen Ballard

Thx!

Ralf

Re: [LegacyUG] "Probably" as part of the locacation (WAS as part of the date)

2007-02-26 Thread ralf_x
Dawn, thx again for your reply.

So, would you create a location called:

Probably Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
(Probably) Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

OR

Vancouver (Probably), British Columbia Canada

The second would list after Vancouver in the Master
List, but I also include the cemetery in brackets
after the city for burials. I wonder if that is too
confusing. UGH

What you say makes sense. But before I start amending
all my "blanks", I just want to layout the best route
to do this. I find I sometimes waste too much time
jumping ahead and having to go back to fix things.

A person without any place is much harder to research
later on (which may be tomorrow, next month, 10 years
later, etc.). Some recording that I have seen (and
done earlier in my research years) doesn't even
include a likely country when it's a good bet that 5
generations prior to immigrating to American the
family that spoke German and had German descendants
was probably from Germany. However, if I exclude such
info from my database, it makes subsequent research
more time consuming. I need to look at each of their
descendants until I find locations. In addition, if I
get to go somewhere to do some research or have access
to a new database, I want a list of probably locations
to nail down.
