Jim didn't mention it but there is a space between "public/" and
"optin" and you need to remove that.

Some email programs will break the link because it exceeds their
maximum line length. The solution is to copy and paste, twice. Here is
how you do it.

First, highlight the first line of the link, copy it, and paste it
into the address bar. Do not hit the enter key. You should see:

http://mail.legacyusers.com/public/optin.aspx?id=b2d3aa81e56e4b8286de812155f

Next highlight the second line of the URL, copy it and paste it at the
end of the first one in your browser address bar. Make sure there is
no space between the two addresses.

So, where your first line ends in 155f, the full URL would appear as"
http://mail.legacyusers.com...155f62641&ml=3&domain=LegacyUsers.com

(The ... indicates what is already there but I can't duplicate it here
since the line would again be too long.)

Now hit the enter key and you should get to the correct page.

Hope this helps.

I was just thinking, another reason Millennia recommends not installing
in "C:\Program Files\" under Vista is probably because the "C:\Program
Files\Legacy\Data\" folder will also get virtualized ... I think. Maybe
someone who has Vista or Win7 and runs Legacy from "C:\Program
Files\Legacy\" can confirm this?

I don't think virtualization by itself will cause problems ... other
than confusion as to where certain files are really located. I wonder if
there are additional reasons Millennia recommends not installing in
"C:\Program Files\"???

Re: [LegacyUG] Address searches

2009-12-29 Thread sylvia
Many thanks Ron - I got that part now how do I combine the two differences
(instead of keep alternating them)...I have some starting with the county,
and some starting with the house number. (However, if I double click on an
address in the master list, the "Add/Edit Location" screen comes up with the
address in the correct order (i.e.. county first) when in the actual master
list it is still in the reverse order.) Is there some way of marking the
ones I do not want to reverse in the master list so it only changes the ones
that are incorrect? Many thanks, Sylvia

just personal choice?

Also, if you reverse the address fields, do you also show the date as; year,

Sylvia,

The way those of us who use the Location field for the full address do this
is to reverse the order in which the Location appears eg change to England,
Kent, Canterbury, 3 Cathedral Close. To do this go to View>Master
Lists>Location. Select Sort (next to the Globe) and check the Right to Left
radio button. Then ensure that the check box next to the Sort button (on the
Location Screen) is also checked.

By the way, I would always include the country - England, Wales, Scotland,
Northern Ireland as part of the location, because if you ever publish on the
web or elsewhere readers may not realise which country you are talking
about!

No apology needed. I was curious because I used to use Generations and I
thought TMG was some iteration of that. It was a good program that just
disappeared. One of the best parts was their photo editing programming

Ron,

The reason is precisely that given in the answer to Sylvia's question ie. to
make finding a location very easy when viewing the Location List - it then
reads, Country, County, Town, Parish, Street (using English location style).

One can change the name order should you wish using Options>Customise>Dates,
but I choose not to - I use the English format.

Is there any particular reason for reversing the address fields, or is it just
personal choice?

Also, if you reverse the address fields, do you also show the date as; year,
month, day?

Sylvia,

The way those of us who use the Location field for the full address do this is
to reverse the order in which the Location appears eg change to England, Kent,
Canterbury, 3 Cathedral Close. To do this go to View>Master Lists>Location.
Select Sort (next to the Globe) and check the Right to Left radio button. Then
ensure that the check box next to the Sort button (on the Location Screen) is
also checked.

By the way, I would always include the country - England, Wales, Scotland,
Northern Ireland as part of the location, because if you ever publish on the
web or elsewhere readers may not realise which country you are talking about!

Trying to compile (or straighten up) my list of places. (Still changing from
Paf5 to Legacy) - some of my census data addresses begin with (for example) 4
Smith Road, Town, Kent others with Kent, Town, 4 Smith Road. I can pick up the
ones starting with "Kent..", but the ones started with "4.." I can't. Can I do
a search with "Kent" anywhere in the address line, or am stuck with finding
them myself? How? Many thanks, againSylvia

Re: [LegacyUG] Basic Sources v. SourceWriter

2009-12-29 Thread Deborah Trounstine
Hi Lucy,
When I create my new SW source, I copy and paste from my original old
source. Then I copy and paste any detail from the old source into the
detail section of SW as well. Fortunately for me, I didn't know how to
use "detail" so I have had very little of that to move over to the new
type of source.
I don't know how the L-tools program works but I have purchased it and
plan to try it on a test source to see. Someone suggested that as a
solution.

2009-12-29 Thread Lucy Abbott
This is a question that I had also and was very interested in the replies. I
have looked at steps from Deborah but have a question.
I see that you have the New Master Source and can delete the Old Master Source
but what about the Source Detail that was part of the old source citation for
each individual where you used the Old Master Source.  This is different for
each individual and I don't see anything that brings that over ?

Lucy

From: Deborah Trounstine
1. create your new SW source
2. go to View > Master Lists > Source
3. find your original "old" source in basic format and select it
4. click on "show list" - you will see a list of all the people attached
to that source.
5. (very important) decide what # tag you want to use for this exercise,
make sure it's showing in the "Individual tag:" box - then click "Untag
Everyone in File". This will clear all the tags of that number in your file.
6. then, on the same screen, click "tag everyone in list". This will tag
all of the people that you want associated with your new SW source.
7. close that window and get back to your main screen.
8. go to Tools > Advanced Sourcing
9. on the "which records to use" tab, select "Assign to all individuals
with tag: (whatever # tag you chose in step 6 above)
10. on the "where to assign citations" tab, select "Assign Citations to
individual information" and "specific fields" and chose which field/s
you want this source assigned to
11. then, click on the "Source Clipboard" button
12. when that opens, you will see "step 1: click here to select or
change the master source to cite" - click!
13. highlight and select your NEW SW source that you want to assign to
all these people, add any detail that you want and click save
14. now you should be back at the source clipboard window - click "apply"
15. all of your individuals now have the new source in the fields that
you chose.
If you want to no longer have any reference to your original "old"
source in these files:
16. return to View > Master Lists > Source
17. find your "old" source and click "show list"
18. choose "delete this master source and all citations to it"
And you're done :)

Jane,

Yes, with any external GEDCOM, Jane. You would need to import the Gedcom and
then use the drag and drop for the bits which you require. I use this
technique when I only wish to import bits and pieces from a download,
otherwise I use the Merge process.

You were correct about the point of my question. Can it also be done from a

This is sort of a follow=up question to a previous one. Can I copy persons
between family files/data bases? For example, can one copy (or import, if
that is different) from a focus group that would consist of a person and

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book - sorting

2009-12-29 Thread Ron Ferguson
Thanks for the URL, Peggy, I was looking at a slightly different chart. I
cannot see how this can be done using Legacy alone. Personally I use Open
Office for moving around chunks of text, as you are doing, and leave it to
sort out the indexes. I don't know Word, but I guess it will do something
similar.

Although, having said that, and I can also see why you may wish to change
the Descendant Report layout, personally I wouldn't do it, as this is the
standard layout for this type of report.

Good luck, and I hope you get there.

Hi Ron,

Thanks for responding to my query. I currently have 8 generations of
descendants listed in my database. If I were to navigate to someone in,
say, the 2nd generation from the index and click on the FAMILY tab, I would
see that person, spouse and their children listed. From this screen, I
click on the DESCENDANT tab and this shows a staggered generation view.

I see the 2nd generation person I searched for followed by their first child
and then their first grandchild and any subsequent firsts further down the
line and then it comes back to display the original person's second child
followed by that person's first child, etc etc.

The book format (from what I have seen) will list everyone in generational
order (all the 2nd generation folks then all the 3rd generation folks, etc
etc). I am trying to find a way to show the generations in staggered view
as explained in the above paragraph.

Sometimes a visual helps better than words please see the following
link: http://www.icgs-wi.org/peggy/Descendant%20view.jpg

IF there is a way to get this look with all the people information in
descendant book layout - I would LOVE to know how to do this. I started
editing the usual view on Friday and I am still working on sorting people
around. I'm only on child 2 of 7! I had hope to have the basics completed
and slightly formatted and to a printer before tomorrow to take with me to
visit my elderly aunt this weekend out of state. I don't think that is
going to happen. :-) The book is currently at 758 pages without table of
contents or the index, just family info and the source citations.

Thanks for any input or ideas on this. I really appreciate them.

I'm trying to get another book together rather quickly before mid-week to

Re: [LegacyUG] Basic Sources v. SourceWriter

2009-12-29 Thread Deborah Trounstine
I agree with you all about having better things to do with my time, but
I have to say that since I decided to move all my sources (well over
1000) to SourceWriter, I have learned so much more, cleaned up mistakes
I made 12 years ago when I started researching and set up a consistent
system so I can find sources easily (and so can the lucky kid that
inherits this project). The same thing has happened in the past when
I've gone through my hard copy files and discovered, for instance, that
there were add'l folks on those census pages that I didn't originally
know were related to the family.
I've put so much time and money into this research, I believe I deserve
to have an accurate and truly useful finished product.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book - sorting

2009-12-29 Thread P Perry

Wow, that sounds neat. I will check into the Split Screen Option and take
it from there.

You were correct about the point of my question. Can it also be done from a
gedcom that we import from - say - Rootsweb?

I was just thinking, another reason Millennia recommends not installing
in "C:\Program Files\" under Vista is probably because the "C:\Program
Files\Legacy\Data\" folder will also get virtualized ... I think. Maybe
someone who has Vista or Win7 and runs Legacy from "C:\Program

I don't think virtualization by itself will cause problems ... other
than confusion as to where certain files are really located. I wonder if
there are additional reasons Millennia recommends not installing in
"C:\Program Files\"???

I have left my older sources as they are. In fact, I'm not in the habit
of using the SourceWriter for new sources - the old system suits me just
fine. One or two minor sources have been set up in the new system, just
to have a play with it, and I have no plan to change them back to the
old system either.

This just goes to show that once again there is more than one way to do
things in Legacy (but you knew that already! ;-) and you can choose a
method that suits you and your needs.

Hope this helps. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Basic Sources v. SourceWriter

2009-12-29 Thread Marilyn Clark
Connie,

I agree with you! I just spent the last month trying to clean up my 718 ugly
and inadequate sources that were caused by moving from a shareware genealogy
program to Legacy. Importing the sources via GEDCOM caused a big mess and the
sourcing was awful. I am down to 239 sources now, about half are in the nice SW
format. My last big push will be to consolidate SSDI sources, then US Census.
Then I quit!! The rest of them can sit around until I have more time. I want to
do research, not housekeeping.

That said, my perfectionist personality keeps nagging me to "fix" this!! The
one plus from all this work is that I'm correcting a few errors and becoming
familiar with my database again, after a couple years away from it.

2009-12-29 Thread GeoSci
I still keep them - in fact I even enter new ones in my old format - I
find the output in reports more to my liking and think they are quite
good at sending anyone wishing to check them to the correct source -
in my mind the only requirement for a source.

If I have a totally new source - unlike any others - I have used SW.

Re: [LegacyUG] Basic Sources v. SourceWriter

2009-12-29 Thread Deborah Trounstine
Hi Angelique,
If I understand correctly, you want to re-write your old sources using
the SW format and then attach all of the same people that you had
attached to the previous old source. Here are the steps I've been
taking. (If someone else has a better method, I'm sure they'll pipe up)
1. create your new SW source
2. go to View > Master Lists > Source
3. find your original "old" source in basic format and select it
4. click on "show list" - you will see a list of all the people attached
to that source.
I know this looks like a lot of steps but once you've done it a couple
of times it takes no time at all. Especially compared to finding and
opening all those individual records to add the source one person at a
time. I've done this process to add a single source to 150 people at
once and it works great.
It might be a good idea to try a test first (you can always delete your
test source and all citations to it).
If you have any problems, let me know.
If anyone knows of a faster way to do this - yay!
Deborah

My database was originally started in a different program back in the 1980s. I
have much better uses for my time than trying to go back and update every
source citation.

I update them a few at a time when I'm working again on an individual or a

Re: [LegacyUG] Address searches

2009-12-29 Thread Ron Ferguson

Re: [LegacyUG] Event Based recording

2009-12-29 Thread Ron Ferguson
Carl,

I am just catching up on my post having been away, so sorry for the few days
delay in commenting.

This matter has been discussed on the list a few times and you should be able
to find details in the archives. However, a number of Listers, of which I am
one, much prefer the current arrangement of Events being attached to People. I
know that other programs have the opposite arrangement, and it often confuses
those who move to Legacy from one of those programs.

To me genealogy is about people, our ancestors, and not about Events. The
Events happen to, or are caused by, our ancestors, and not normally the other
way round. For that reason I find it strange that one might wish to have the
Events as the controlling feature and if, because of programming constraints or
program size (bloat) it is only reasonable to have one or the other, then I
would wish to have the priority with the people. That is a main reason as to
why I use Legacy.

There had been talk a few versions ago about Legacy getting the capability of
creating an EVENT then attaching folks that “belong” to that event. I feel this
would be much better than having to create a specific CENSUS event for each
person/marriage found in a family’s entry on the census.

Is this still in the works?

I am not with you, may be post holiday memory loss! As I see it both the
Descendant Chart and the Descendant Report are in generation order, which is
standard.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book - sorting

  Hello,

I have been using Legacy for quite some time now and have created descendant
books from the program. However, the sorting of the individuals is not how I
would like them to appear in the book and so have in the past spend countless
DAYS reworking the individuals around. I would like to know if there is a way
to resort the individuals to get them to appear in a different format please.

What I would like is to see the option of having everyone sorted as they are
on the Descendant chart with their full information and notes. My Descendant
Chart alone is 19 pages for this ancestral couple. The subsequent book starts
out at over 500 pages in it's current versioning.

I'm trying to get another book together rather quickly before mid-week to get
to the printer before I leave to visit relatives on New Year's Day in a
different state than I am in. I started working on the current version of this
book on Friday and I am still working on sorting through all of the descendants
of the 1st child of this ancestral couple yet.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  Thank you,
  Peggy

[LegacyUG] Print timeline?

2009-12-29 Thread Deborah Trounstine
Hi Kids!
Hope you all had a good holiday.
Does anyone know if it's possible to print the timeline that is created

list that you create under this tab but I can't figure out how to print
the timeline.
Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Basic Sources v. SourceWriter

2009-12-29 Thread Marvin & Angelique Welch
Hello Everyone,

I was wondering what everyone else was doing with their "older" sources
that were made with the basic source templates from older versions, are
you keeping them just the way they are? Or, are you changing them over
to the SourceWriter? If so, what is the easiest way of doing this?

I have been slowly re-adding my sources using SourceWriter one at a
time, but there has to be an easier way of associating that older source
with the newer one so I don't have to reconnect to each person again.

I tried making a "mock" source with the basic format, connecting it to
1-2 people and also creating another "mock" source using SourceWriter
and then combining them to see if that would be an easier way of
connecting the people to the source. But it would not allow me to
combine them.

When the 7.0 was created, was there any discussion about how users could
convert their older sources to the newer SourceWriter format?

Thanks for any help on this

Angelique

Re: [LegacyUG] Copying people

Jane,

I am not certain that I understand you question correctly. I take it that you
have two Legacy databases on your PC and want to know if you can transfer
families from one to the other. If that is so, then you need to use the Split
Screen Option and then drag and drop.

Naturally, I did not unsubscribe when I went away for Christmas, unlike
previous years. It does seem to me that there is a big problem with the new

It seems to be my domain system, rather than the ISP. I subscribed again with

proper email address (j...@jearnshaw.me.uk) where everything is forwarded to my
ISP. So I'd better tackle the domain name supplier.

1. Check your own ISP to see if junk mail filters are enabled and they are
somehow deleting the LUG messages.
2. Check your own client email program to see same.

I've never said that I have a high regard for my own programming skills because
I simply don't have any commercial programming skills. I do find it amazing
that the Legacy programmers can allow the creation of such large databases with
multiple hooks yet the programming remains robust and doesn't crash. I do see
flaws in specific programming presentation and user interfaces rather than
flaws in people.

You can source your notes by using the old MLA sourcing technique of
putting a reference to the source in brackets at the end of the
paragraph or sentence.

For example, if the source is "Early Fairchilds in America" by Jean
Fairchild Gilmore, at the end of the section, I'd enter [Gilmore] and
then source my book in the Notes the usual way.

I wish to include in my family file a narrative description of an
ancestor who was transported to Australia as a convict. The narrative
will be 1000-1500 words, with multiple sources to be cited, and
although the best place for it in Legacy would seem to be the
Individual Notes, I am finding that Notes doesn’t appear to provide
for sources to be cited separately. When multiple sources are cited,
Legacy lumps all the footnote/endnote numbers together at the end of
the Notes entry, rather than keeping each one beside the specific item
of information to which it relates. Similarly, when producing a
Descendant Narrative which includes Events with citations, Legacy
lumps all the Event footnote/endnote numbers together at the end of
the Event Name. Not only that, the Event footnote/endnote numbers
duplicate the numbers allocated to the separate Notes citations. Can
someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?
Thank you. Richard

[LegacyUG] Legacy problem

2009-12-29 Thread Graham

I am using your last post as my entry point Sherry, mainly because you
are from 'Legacy support'.

I am at my wits end, I cannot get Legacy Charting7 to work on my
computer. I am using Windows XP and everything else from Legacy7 works
just fine. This is the original message sent via Legacy's support
page:
.
December 17, 2009. Problem: Charting will not operate:

Error Messages: Access violation at address 0043DD98 in module
legacycharting.exe. Read of address 002c.

In safe mode Charting is accessable until another error message
appears, "System error. Code: 1722. The RPC server is unavailable".
.
Also from your Technical help page, I have tried to download the
suggested 'RPC' file from Microsoft but it is not available to me for
some reason.
.
Jim from customer support asked me to try this:

1) Download this Windows script file named
"FixLegacyChartingInstall.bat" and run it on your computer.

http://www.legacycharting.com/Download/FixLegacyChartingInstall.bat

2) Please temporarily disable your Internet security (firewall,
anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-adware, spam blocker, popup blocker,
etc.) because some very aggressive Internet security programs may
remove system files that Legacy needs to work properly or block Legacy
from reaching the Internet when trying to download.

Next visit http://www.legacycharting.com/download.asp then download
and run the charting setup from the Web.
...
Jim said that if this doesn't work, (and it didn't), that he would
hand it over to the programer. Fair enough, we are in the Christmas
period and they are probably on holidays, but I have heard nothing yet
from the programer/s.

So, as I said, I tried that, plus a zillion other things, both in
normal mode and safe mode. After uninstalling both Legacy7 and
LegacyCharting, then deleteing everything, including the Millennia
folder, as well as the C:\Legacy folder, all has been to no avail.
Also as well as a few other places, I tried installing everything to;
D&S>All users> App Data>Legacy. My thinking being that this might be
available to everyone, hence maybe no access violation. But alas,
still the same access violation notices.

I am definitely not a computer expert, more likely regarded as an
intermediate user (since 1998), and so, I am probably way off the
mark.

As I say, I am at my wits end and willing to try anything from the
very learned users on this list, if they have anything to suggest.

Thank you, Graham
