Re: [LegacyUG] Controlling picture size in Charts

2010-01-05 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
What I did was with the pictures that seemed to be sized 'wrong', is made 2-3
sizes of certain photos. When needed I switch them to preferred one. I then
named them Bill Smith small, and Bill Smith large. I did it in Legacy's Photo
tool.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Controlling picture size in Charts

Is there any way to control the size of a picture in an ancestor
chart?  I am using Legacy Charting and trying to make a 4 generation
chart to fit on one page.  The chart fts fine without pictures and
would fit very nicely with pictures if I could make the photos a bit
smaller.  I know that the box width controls the picture size, but
when I get the printing the way I want it, the picture is too big and
if I adjust for picture size, I can't control the printing.  I would
like to be able to adjust the picture independently of the rest of the
box. Is this possible?

Immediately before your email (below) you will see a link to the list rules
and two links to exactly what you are requesting. One of the rules is that
they should be removed before sending, However I have left it in so it

What would be nice, is that ALL the responses are collected in a file, and
made available on a WEBSITE, with the file being archived DAILY.
So... some people that would like to NOT RECEIVE e-mails from the list, they
could actually peruse the WEBSITE once a day.

I have been here five years and it shows no sign of diminishing. In fact it is
on the rise. I welcome Newbies, but as the name implies, each of them must
learn how this program works, and its support tools in trial and error method,
themselves. I would not know how to direct all digest questions (only) to a
person, to avoid sending it to the list, nor would I take the job.

It's so annoying that newbies don't know there is no digest - but on the

Maybe we can designate one person who monitors the list pretty
religiously to respond ONE time to those digest? inquiries and then we
can all get on with the conversation.
Just a suggestion...

Re: [LegacyUG] Search or report criteria help

2010-01-05 Thread RICHARD SCHULTHIES
First, define what a file is. Are you meaning a Legacy database file, or a
source file, or an event file? Your file as named sounds like a combination of
a source and and event, but is
probably a document turned into a photocopy. If it is a sourrce then it is real
easy. Find the Master Source List.  When on the source list, highlight the
correct source.  On the right side there are choices. Pick the one called show
list. All people using it will be listed. If it an Event, go to the icon
called search (picture of magnifying glass). Choose Individual, Event-Name,
Equal to,  then in what to look for put "1900 Census ST Banner.jpg".
If I am not understanding you, could you ask the question using Legacy
'verbiage'.

Hello all,
I'd like to know if it is possible to create a search list or report that would
list persons that are associated with individual files. For example, I have a
file called 1900 Census ST Banner.jpg. I would like a listing of those
individuals attached to this file. I used this file for residence, occupation,
birth place etc. event. I kind of wandered around the Picture Center but didn't
really see such an option. I don't use it normally.

Thanks, Nancy

the one you have about including "digest not available" where you have to

No wonder I never saw it. When I subscribed in L5, there was bofh fypes of
servers, but I was glad when need removed the choice. People were responding to
my 'one message' within the digest, sometimes including 5-10 copies of the
whole digest (including 200+ messages), and I was on dial up. The newbies may
not know that this is the only mention about no digest? My suggestion is that
in the 'Legacy User Group guidelines:'  include a note saying that fact.

[LegacyUG] Search or report criteria help

2010-01-05 Thread Nancy
Hello all,
I'd like to know if it is possible to create a search list or report that would
list persons that are associated with individual files. For example, I have a
file called 1900 Census ST Banner.jpg. I would like a listing of those
individuals attached to this file. I used this file for residence, occupation,
birth place etc. event. I kind of wandered around the Picture Center but didn't
really see such an option. I don't use it normally.

Thanks, Nancy

Quite! Perhaps a redesign of the page such that all the information is given
first before any selection fields or subscription links are given. People

Bob,

Nobody is getting at you, and yes the Forum is for discussing Legacy and
asking questions. But the fact is that what Mary says is correct for Events
and Event Notes. However your reference to endnotes suggests to me that you
are thinking of Sources and Not Events.

I understand that you are discussing Family Group Reports (FGR), but I was
alluding to my penchant for 'Report --> Book --> Descendant-Narrative' where
the 'events' are either positioned as footnotes with the individual, which
would be similar to the FGR, or positioned at the end of the book if using
endnotes. As I indicated, it was just an observation - and a personal
choice, being neither 'wrong' nor critical as has been implied.

I thought this forum was for discussing ways of using Legacy and asking
questions - am wrong on this?

Bob,

I may be misunderstanding your comment below regarding the data being
removed from the individual but if the Notes event is attached to the
individual, it prints with the individual. If it is attached to the
marriage, it reads in the marriage information. It is the same as placing
the information in the General or Marriage Notes, you just have more control
over where it shows up in the narrative plus you can attach a photo as well
as separately source information to each Notes event.

A personally created event is used just like the included Named events would
be with an individual or a marriage to attach/ include information for the
family group.

I experimented with Mary's suggestion and with an event 'Notes', you can
move the data to any spot in the End notes. However, it sort of loses appeal
to me when the data is not with the individual in a book narrative. If you
have a 500 page book, the individual note (now an event) is listed on page
385 (example only) and seems to remove the 'history' from the immediate
individual. Guess it is all in one's preference, but it is an interesting
concept. - especially the photo addition possibility.

Cathy,

In order to organize your report with the notes at the beginning, just
create a new 'event' titled Notes and copy and paste your hard coded notes
into the event titled Notes. After that is done and you're sure you have the
notes section all copied, then delete the identical information from the
section of hard coded notes. This way, you can shift this new event all
around among the events so it will read and print as and where you'd like it
to within the report. With an event, you can also add in (attach) a photo.
While the photos usually are quite small (maybe someday we'll be allowed to
size them as we'd like) at least they add some interest to the events.

If you'd like to see a report that I can produce using an event titled
notes, as well as some of the original named events, rather than using the
hard coded Notes, I'll create a short one in a pdf file, attach to an email
and send to you so you can see how I've used an event titled 'notes' to
write up some of my family history. This report can now be created in a
second or two and I can shift and edit to my hearts content, should I come
across more information or photo's I'd like to add to this family's history.

Mary

Quite! Perhaps a redesign of the page such that all the information is given
first before any selection fields or subscription links are given. People
would then be more inclined to read before clicking.

This isdirected actually to the crew at Legacy. Since we don't have digest
available anyway, could you put in the 'guidelines' a note that about that,
which would tell future newbies the facts. I don't care about digest, but
this might cut down on the (reasonably) continuous requests for this. Not to
cause distress to the newbies, nor the oldtimers that know.

I don't find it particularly visible. Perhaps a change of emphasis - size of

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Group Report with Editable Text and Pictures

2010-01-05 Thread RUNION ROBERT
I understand that you are discussing Family Group Reports (FGR), but I was
alluding to my penchant for 'Report --> Book --> Descendant-Narrative' where
the 'events' are either positioned as footnotes with the individual, which
would be similar to the FGR, or positioned at the end of the book if using
endnotes. As I indicated, it was just an observation - and a personal choice,
being neither 'wrong' nor critical as has been implied.

I thought this forum was for discussing ways of using Legacy and asking
questions - am wrong on this?

Adding some File IDs to the Sample file should not be a problem.

It's great we have it there not only for users to see how a professional

The OP was referring to File IDs I think. But Sherry is correct in
suggesting that you add a few File IDs to sample.fdb and run the report.

RE: [LegacyUG] All reports freeze program.

2010-01-05 Thread Sherry/Support
You can add some. Go to Options > Customize > Other, where you'll find the
option under "Custom User ID Numbers".

If the problem occurs in the sample file, then we know it's not your file but
your installation of Legacy.

No one suggested that you "move" the tree. Evert suggested that you export to
a new Family File. Sometimes that will clear up problems that a check/repair
doesn't.

Thanks for using Legacy.

RE: [LegacyUG] All reports freeze program.

2010-01-05 Thread Sherry/Support
I'm not sure which suggestions on which error page you tried, but I would do
the following things in order, especially if you're not getting an error
message. Do one step at a time and try the report again.

When the report freezes, press the Alt key and see if an error message pops up.
If still no message, do the following. If there's an error message, check it
out on the website - Help Center > Technical Support. Or you can click the
Online Troubleshooting Help in the Support section of the Legacy Home tab

Make sure you have the latest build of Legacy 7.0.0.109

Back up the Family File

Run File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair

Export to a new Family File (File > Export to... > Legacy file.

If you're still having problems, please email supp...@legacyfamilytree.com or
click on "Report a Bug" in the Support section of the Legacy Home tab to
complete a support form. That way we can work with you on solving this
problem. The LUG list is for "users helping users" and best for how-to type
questions.

Thanks for using Legacy.

Bob,

What exactly do you mean by "book narrative"? This thread was about
Family Group Reports. But for your information with the Descendant
Narrative Report my Events and Event Notes, came immediately after the
individual's data.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family Group Report with Editable Text and Pictures

2010-01-05 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Bob,

I may be misunderstanding your comment below regarding the data being removed
from the individual but if the Notes event is attached to the individual, it
prints with the individual. If it is attached to the marriage, it reads in the
marriage information. It is the same as placing the information in the General
or Marriage Notes, you just have more control over where it shows up in the
narrative plus you can attach a photo as well as separately source information
to each Notes event.

A personally created event is used just like the included Named events would be
with an individual or a marriage to attach/ include information for the family
group.

I experimented with Mary's suggestion and with an event 'Notes', you can move
the data to any spot in the End notes. However, it sort of loses appeal to me
when the data is not with the individual in a book narrative. If you have a
500 page book, the individual note (now an event) is listed on page 385
(example only) and seems to remove the 'history' from the immediate individual.
Guess it is all in one's preference, but it is an interesting concept. -

Cathy,

In order to organize your report with the notes at the beginning,
just
create a new 'event' titled Notes and copy and paste your hard
coded notes
into the event titled Notes. After that is done and you're sure you
have the
notes section all copied, then delete the identical information
from the
section of hard coded notes. This way, you can shift this new event
all
around among the events so it will read and print as and where
you'd like it
to within the report. With an event, you can also add in (attach) a
photo.
While the photos usually are quite small (maybe someday we'll be
allowed to
size them as we'd like) at least they add some interest to the
events.

If you'd like to see a report that I can produce using an event
titled
notes, as well as some of the original named events, rather than
using the
hard coded Notes, I'll create a short one in a pdf file, attach to
an email
and send to you so you can see how I've used an event titled
'notes' to
write up some of my family history. This report can now be created
in a
second or two and I can shift and edit to my hearts content, should
I come
across more information or photo's I'd like to add to this family's
history.

Mary

William & Charles:

Thank you for your response to my posting.

I have Adobe Acrobat Professional but it will not change the Legacy
PDF into OCR because the file contains the pictures I want to
retain. It will only change an all text file into OCR.

I have Microsoft Word but .rtf loses the event pictures and .txt
loses all pictures + formatting.

The reasoning for moving the Notes to the top is I've used that
section to write a Family Biography (a story-type summary of the
full
history of the husband and wife and their life together with family
stories and remembrances and descriptions of the personalities of
the
people--kinda like you would seen in a biography book). I'd like
the
flow to be the overall summary of the people followed by the "facts
and events" for the husband followed by the "facts and events" for
the wife followed by the "facts and events" for the marriage. A
reader can just read the overall summary or can get into more detail
by reading the facts with the detail of the Census', occupation
(some
with pictures like the store they owned or an ad they ran),
residences with pictures of the house they lived in, etc.

I'm guessing what I want to do can't be done but thought I'd ask.

I'm preparing for a family reunion and have books with sections for
each marriage/family and would like the sections to begin with this
report followed by the photos and all do
