Here in South Africa, this is a common problem. On the high-veldt here,
we are prone to some very violent thunderstorms which can knock the
power out or make it dip. We make extensive use of Surge Protection on
mains outlets and, indeed, on telephone jacks. Doesn't stop the power
outages or data corruptions, but it does help to prevent lightening
entering the house.

Glad to know that other people around the world are facing similar
problems :-)

Hi Scott and Charles,

I agree with Charles, you need to backup frequently and not just to your
computer, use DVD's, USP's, external harddrives, unline websites, whatever you
have at hand because a power surge could destroy your computer's hard drive.

What I have done to help avoid the kind of problem that you are having Scott is
that I invested in a battery powered backup, I use APC PowerChute which will
give me about 30 plus minutes of power which will allow me plenty of time to
back up my data and multimedia files and then exit my program properly.

Re: [LegacyUG] Step-children.... in Family Group Sheets

2010-05-06 Thread Bruce Jones
Jill,
Let me correct my previous post. Setting the "Show 1/2 kids" setting
works on the family view, but not the printed family group sheet. To
do what you want, you need to link each step child to the desired
couple (remember that children can be linked to more than one set of
parents).

Scott, database programs (of any kind) kind do some very strange things when
not properly closed, or exited from their normal routines. The only remedy that
I am aware of is frequent good backups. Perhaps others on the list may have
more specific information relative to the Access database used by Legacy.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Power outage now errors and other issues

Tonight the power blipped out for about 12 seconds while I was using
Legacy. When it returned, I restarted my computer and restarted
Legacy ... but now the program is doing all sorts of funky things.

It starts by asking me what report fonts I want, and then tells me it
can't find a printer. When I'm in the database, I notice it has reset
a bunch of options (like the headers on the Index View). When
entering new people I get the error message 3021: No current record.
Try again? If I click no, all seems well.

Why would Legacy flip out because it wasn't shut off properly? Power
outages happen. How do I get the program to operate normal again? Do
I need to uninstall and reinstall? If so, how can I not have to redo
every custom setting?

Thanks,
Scott

It sounds like some of your .usr files got corrupted (at the very
least). I would start by shutting down Legacy and restoring the .usr's
from a backup. If you have never backed up your .usr files you may be
out of luck.

You can, but I thought that you had received details of how to do it. Are
you still having problems? If so I will be happy to give full steps.

Thanks for your replies, Richard and Bruce.

I understand why they wouldn't be included, but I thought perhaps there was
