Re: [LegacyUG] cemetery entries

2011-02-11 Thread Ron Ferguson
With respect, the whole point of the Source Writer system is the the format
*is* standardised in accordance with the principles of Evidence Explained by
Elizabeth Shown Mills, and available from Legacy.

Whilst I use Source Writer, I do not consider it necessary to complete all
fields in most cases, and sometimes use them for unintended purposes, but
this is *my* choice and not a recommendation. What you include in a Source
Citation is entirely up to yourself. With respect to copyright material, if
the use is dependant on the inclusion of specified material, eg. a link to a
website, then this can usually be included in a comment, or maybe the
Repository, it rather depends on what the information is.

The Help files also give pretty good instructions on the use of the Source
Writer system.

What is the best way to enter cemetry data? I have some with the cemetery

comment field. I want to be able to access all entries in a cemetery. I can
find

data. Is there a prefered or standard for particular data entries?

Format of Source List is not standardized. When using copywrited data with

I know there are several questions in one query, but I have finally reached
a
level where I am not just gathering information but sorting and displaying

Hi John

I think the answer you are after, is to search for one daughter (clear the
list first for this first search only), then search the resulting search
list - it will give you individuals, not families, so you create a list and
work through it looking at the Family window.

As a long time Legacy user I use the search feature quite often. I've hit
the same question twice and am not sure if I can solve it via search -
couldn't figure out how the first time - and now hope some guru out there
can help!

I have a mother's will that lists three female married children. The
deceased mother may/may not be the birth mother of the children due to
having had two or more husbands. This is in the late 1700's when families
tended to use the same first names VERY frequently.

The search I need is to find the family or families in my Legacy database
that have daughters with all three of the given names, or alternately with
just two.

[mother: Jean Harris; daughters: Jean Dawkins, Cloey Lisles, Lettes
Cockrell; the three daughters surnames are common in my data file, the
mother's surname is not in there - yet]

All suggestions appreciated.

You don't have to search for a person's last modified date.
While in Family View, highlight the person - the last modified date is

I think you need to be a little more explicit with your requirements.

On the Family tab, in the bottom right-hand corner is a date. This is the date
that the record for selected individual was last modified. If you click on that
date, a window opens, containing the Last Modified information.

Other than that, in the Detailed Search pane, the 'Where to look' criteria can
contain the 'Modified Date' and/or 'Modified Time' fields.

Re: [LegacyUG] SourceWriter and GEDCOM

2011-02-11 Thread Connie Sheets
Ward,

This is an excellent idea which I hope would be relatively easy to implement.
I have no desire to abandon Legacy, but there is a competitor I'd like to use
for some purposes.  I'm essentially trapped in Legacy because I have many
sources written in SourceWriter and they are completely garbled when exported
to GEDCOM.  For that matter, they are garbled if reimported from GEDCOM into
Legacy.

Now that this issue is getting publicity on a rather widely read blog, I hope
it will be higher on the to fix list.

1-way transfers, at least. It wouldn't be very suitable for
 back and forth
transfers. Instead of simply throwing all the master source
 fields together
in one GEDCOM field, and all the detail source fields
 together in another
GEDCOM field, flatten out the hierarchy. Each citation
 would essentially be
one big detail field in the GEDCOM containing the full
 citation exactly as
if formatted for an internal Legacy report.

There are probably other ideas. I wonder what Legacy's
 competitors are doing
 with the same issue?

Re: [LegacyUG] cemetery entries

2011-02-11 Thread Connie Sheets
It appears to me you are asking at least two separate questions:

(1) How best to enter cemetery locations?

This is a personal choice; there is no standard way to do this nor does there
need to be. I never use the Burial Address field, but most of my research is
in rural areas. (I might feel differently if I were dealing with more urban
locations, although I doubt it). Instead, I put the name of the cemetery in
the Buried Location field, e.g.

Cedar Hill Cem., Blythedale, Harrison Co., Missouri

I sort my locations right to left and can easily print a list of everyone
buried in that cemetery from the Master Locations List.

(2) How do I record that I'm using copyright information with permission?

As Ron has suggested, I would use the Comments field of the Master Source
screen (or Source Detail, whichever is most appropriate) to record that
information. If you want it printed on your reports, be sure to check the box
on that screen that provides for that option.

Hope this helps,

Connie

There is an option that does not work for everyone, but it does for us
because on our website we don't want to incur duplicate names

chosen to do so in the adjacent note fields. That way, we don't have to
use different locations for Massachusetts and Massachusetts Bay Colony,

If that is the case, then as you have determined, the option is to leave the

feature request to have the county verifier added to the Exclude from

unnecessarily. While desiring to keep historical accuracy, we have
chosen to do so in the adjacent note fields. That way, we don't have to
use different locations for Massachusetts and Massachusetts Bay Colony,
for example. We simply explain the historical accuracy in the notes
which are part of the same person's record. --Jerry /

You should probably report that as a bug. I got around the error message
 by
using Norfolk County, Massachusetts Bay Colony. The USA County Verifier is
correct. Norfolk County did not exist in the **state** of Massachusetts

1793. But one existed in the **colony** from 1643-1679/80.

 Jerry,
If that is the case, then as you have determined, the
 option is to leave the
county blank or turn off the county verifier. You could
 also submit a
feature request to have the county verifier added to the
 Exclude from
Potential Problems screen so that you can turn it off per
 individual.

I also wish there was a way to upload these to the LUG. I have sent them to
several people who have asked for them and have several more interested. It
would be much easier that way.

The tutorials are actually handouts I made for my presentation to a local users

how they work for you. Others who have asked and have not yet received them
should get them as soon as I have time to send them. I am now heading to the

RE: [LegacyUG] cemetery entries

2011-02-11 Thread Paul Gray
There has been lots of good discussion in the past about the pros and cons of
putting the full address (e.g. cemetery name, hospital) in the location field
vs. the address table. Until recently, I was in the 'use the address table'
camp, but I have changed my mind.

I still think it's more correct from a database point of view to use the
separate address table, but it does cause problems when exporting/importing a
GEDCOM to other applications. Legacy creates the appropriate fields in the
GEDCOM, but in the two other applications I am familiar with (Family Tree Maker
and Roots Magic) , there is no equivalent of the address table for locations.
So, the address is simply lost.

All applications have a location/place field. So, if you put the full address
in Legacy's location field, you are pretty much assured that you will retain it
when importing into other locations. If you use the separate address table, the
other applications may or may not import all of the address.

If you are not planning on exporting GEDCOMs to be used in other applications,
this probably doesn't matter. But if you are, putting the full address in the
location field increases the chances that the transfer to the other application
won't lose some data.

I always use the burial address. When going into burial address, you should
click on Address List to see if you have already entered that location before.
If you have, you can merge duplicated addresses etc. Within the Address List,
you can click on Show List to see who else is buried there. It's a very slick
process. It seems like all of the reports that people go through is far more
time consuming with more steps than necessary. But then we have choices for
people to use Legacy in the way that works best for that individual.

Connie

I believe that the mapping feature only uses the location field, so if you
want to show a map with multiple locations within a city, putting the
address in the location field would be necessary.

Heavenly days! Who would want to bother with anything else but Legacy? I paid
for FTM a few months ago just to see what other family members are dealing
with. I also downloaded a free version of RootsMagic a few months ago too.
They seem very much the same and I don't like their emphasis on the Ancestor
Chart on the main page. I'm so glad that I left FTM behind years ago.
Instead, I have numbers of relatives converted to Legacy, and they are
sometimes begging me (as the elected Family Historian) not to change from
Legacy. My only wish after all these years is that Legacy would switch from
the old boxy look to more rounded edges and maybe shading colors to modernize
the look but leave the Family View as it is otherwise.

several people who have asked for them and have several more interested. It
would be much easier that way.

The tutorials are actually handouts I made for my presentation to a local
users group and have not been beta tested. I would therefore like some
feedback on how they work for you. Others who have asked and have not yet
received them should get them as soon as I have time to send them. I am now
heading to the local community college for a genealogy class.

Is there any way the tutorial could appear on list? I think a lot of people
would be interested in itand although a lengthy discussion has taken

RE: [LegacyUG] cemetery entries faithfulness to Legacy

2011-02-11 Thread Paul Gray
Ellen,

Please don't take my comments as suggesting I'm considering converting to
another program. Legacy is by far the best of Legacy, Family Tree Maker, and
Roots Magic. It will continue to be my main database.

That being said, GEDCOMs are used to exchange data at times, and because of
differences in the file structures between programs, and either errors
implementing or just different interpretations of the GEDCOM standards between
developers, data is invariably lost or garbled in the transfer. To the extent
that we can use a field (like location) in a common way that the majority of
applications understand consistently, we minimize our headaches when doing
transfers.

If you are not planning on exporting GEDCOMs to be used in other applications,
this probably doesn't matter. But if you are, putting the full address in the
location field increases the chances that the transfer to the other application
won't lose some data.

Paul

God bless,
Ellen
