[LegacyUG] adding an item to a box
I am not sure if this is appropriate but I wonder if anyone can tell me how to add a 'non conventional' item to a box on a chart I wish to add 'see Chart 1/2/3' etc to the bottom of a box for specific people in order to direct someone to other appropriate charts in a printed format. I know how to select the normal items for inclusion in the box - but can't work out how to achieve this with my own addition. This is to help with following collateral lines. Any help welcomed I have the latest Legacy update for my programme. My Charting programme is 7.4 Thanks Lyn Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
RE: [LegacyUG] Civil War Military Records
I don't have any experience with Civil War records specifically, but I doubt that I would put each record as an event. Rather I would use a Military Service Event (I think it is a standard Legacy Event) or possibly an Enlisted Event (not sure if this is standard or one I created) and use each record as a source having created a Master Source for each type of document / record you have. The specifics (such as record number etc.) for each document / record would be added to source detail. I would add any details regarding the actual service into the Notes section of the Event. Not sure what I would call the source derived from the documents that have no specific title - but if they came from a web site for instance I think I would list the source as Internet Site, URL of site in Source Detail and put the information contained in the Text box. It may well be that these documents simply confirm details from other more extensive documents and so would be a second source for one Event - indeed it may be that numerous documents are all sources for one Event unless the person served in several different conflicts / units / whatever. Hope I've made myself clear. Cheers Jan -Original Message- From: Sheri Harris [mailto:sharr...@comcast.net] Sent: Sunday, 17 April 2011 8:29 To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Civil War Military Records Please forgive me for asking what is probably a very dumb question and overlooking the obvious on these documents, but this is my first venture into military service records. Much of the information regarding military service I have entered in my database years ago is in need of a major overhaul as I knew nothing about military service, etc, so any advice and guidance is greatly appreciated. I still consider myself a beginner with so much to learn. Recently, I've found many more documents concerning Civil War military service for several of my ancestors. Many of these documents are Muster Rolls with as many as 15 just for one person and there are a handful of these that I'm not really sure what the document 'title' is. By title, I mean the document isn't clearly 'titled' like Muster Roll, Prisoner Of War, etc. Some just list the name, unit information, rank and several lines of numbers, which I'm assuming are file/reference numbers for other documents. So for the documents that I know what they are, I'm going to enter each document separately as it's own event, but not sure if the title of the document should be the event name or something like Civil War Military Service with the document name as the description, then the date of occurrence, and the location listed on the document, with any other notes entered in the notes section for that event. Or is there another way to handle these documents? And not sure how to enter this type of occurrence where a couple of my ancestors were civilians that were taken by Union troops to serve as guides, etc., and then taken prisoner. I haven't located the actual documents, but these occurrences have been in several books written about the specific battle, which supports the family stories. Thank you again for your expertise! Re: [LegacyUG] Civil War Military Records
How I do it is use one "Military Service" event and summarize what I want to include in reports and such in the notes. If I have multiple sources, say a couple of different books, I'll treat those as different sources in Legacy as well. However, if I find a collection of 35 cards/pages of military records (say from something like FootNote), then I bunch those into one source of "Compiled Military Service Records for XXX" or something like that. I realize you did say you wanted to treat each separately. But, that's just me, sounds like you have a need/desire to break them down more granular perhaps than I do. Re: [LegacyUG] Screen Moves Back and Forth
I've seen this on occasion too. I don't remember exactly what I did to fix it. I *think* I've only see this happen when I do not have Legacy running full screen, and the display is right at the edge of requiring scrollbars. Again, I *think* what is happening is that that something in the UI keeps showing and hiding the scrollbars, making the screen jump. The whole point of that is try resizing the window up or down a bit to see if it goes away. If you are already maximized, sorry, I don't know what to say about that. Re: [LegacyUG] restore from merge backup
Yes. I had forgotten that midstream there are some options uniquely avalable, that disappear as a choice after decisions/saves have been I am to picky, I never start a merge until positive I need it, so never second guess my plan. I am to paranoid about making errors on my part. What I meant was, that at some point the 'TO BE MERGED', has finished the process, and is now in the new version of the old DB, as an intergral part. I avoid this option. Sorry for any confusion. I just purchased an Acer Aspire One netbook, (Win 7 starter, 1 GB Ram, 250 GB HD) and have had no problems with Legacy (2100+ individuals). I even have it set up on my home network to access my files, including my Legacy family file, on my desktop which runs on Win XP. I just make sure all have the same Legacy versions and limit the number of other programs open. Hope this helps! Diane, I have no idea what causes this problem but I was concerned that after re-installing Legacy perhaps you would have been better off to use a Legacy backup zip file or the FDB file rather than importing a gedcom. This screen comes up after click CLOSE to close the Merge window. The next window that pops up is called MERGE COMPLETE. At the bottom of that window is a box to check to show this window at the end of every merge. Possibly you have unchecked this sometime in the past and that is why you are not seeing the window now. I believe that The Powers That Be have, in their wisdom (or lack of it!) taken what *I* believe to be the backward step of no longer forbidding HTML in LUG posts. There is nothing to stop you viewing your e-mails in a larger font, even if they are in plain text. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
[LegacyUG] Error 3314
Hi all I have just recently downloaded the upadate for deluxe and am finding this error which is not mentioned on the online troubleshooting. Error saving picture Error 3314. The field 'tblBR.IDBPPic' cannot contain a null value because the required property for this field is set to true. Enter a value in this field. Would you like to try again etc. I can only push Quit and it quits right out of Legacy, and I loose my latest work. Any clues. I have done a maintenance check, and nothing is wrong.? Thanks heaps Regards Gwen Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp
