Re: [LegacyUG] Families iPhnoe app

2011-05-09 Thread Noddie
I was also wondering about an app for the iPad 2 which I could use in
conjunction with my Legacy family tree.
Would I be right in saying that 'Families' could be the one I would
use. Would it sync with my mac and my
windows side where 'Legacy' is.

I was hoping I could gedcom a file, and send it to my ipad and then be
able to view and edit records from
there? The site for the software does not explain the use of it very
well, it is only a viewer or a mobile
user friendly program where I could transfer my data to and then
transfer it back to my mac.
Thanks for your time

Gwen

I have Families for iPad and believe it's much the same as the app for iPhone.
I love the convenience of always having my Legacy data with me but I find the
fields too small to do much in the way of editing (which was my initial
objective). My favorite aspect is being able to surf genealogical sites from
anywhere in spare minutes and quickly check my Legacy file to see if "hits"
have any bearing on my research. Rather than update via Families and re-import
to my PC I usually e-mail the data to myself and update only the on the PC. I
certainly don't regret spending the $15 for the app.

RE: [LegacyUG] Families iPhnoe app

2011-05-09 Thread Forrest
Hi Joshua

I have the families app - with 402,020 names in the database {all the one tree}

Brilliant - but a little slow to load up - no doubt due to the size of the file

Also my iphone is the earlier model and only the smallest memory - but that
seems to be no hindrance

I can't believe how small the file becomes on the iphone - amazing

All the photos and notes etc are all there

Each time I backup Legacy - I also do the same for the families app - by
deleting and reinstalling on the iphone - I think that can be achieved by
updating - but my way is fine for me

I use it on the android. As a reference app its fine. I only send from
legacy to families though and don't try to make any edits within families.
When at the library or when I just need to look up something, its a great
app and better that the others I have tried.

Re: [LegacyUG]

2011-05-09 Thread Sherry/Support
Poor Myrna's Yahoo! account has been hijacked.  This has been
discussed many times on the LUG list in the past when other listers
have had their accounts hijacked and similar emails were sent to the
list.

Do NOT click on links sent to you or an email list which have no other
information about the link.

Myrna will probably find a Sent email in her Sent Mail folder on her
Yahoo webmail showing that this was sent.

It happened to me last year - I can only think it was done through the web

We've seen this with Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and more recently AOL and
MSN accounts.

The only way to prevent these emails from going out from your email
account is to not have any contacts in the Contact List!

Re: [LegacyUG] SourceWriter: Determining and Defining Types of Sources

2011-05-09 Thread my genealogy email
Kathy,
For the source credit line you can see an example of what to put in there if
you put your mouse over the word “Credit Line” ( if you forget what goes in a
particular field this will work for other fields too)

The V means that the source was verified (ie you looked at the source and
verified that what you sourced was in that source).

To reuse the same master source but use different detail be sure to use the
Source Clipboard and make sure the box “Prompt for Detail” is checked that way
when you apply the source to an event the last citation will pop up and then
you can change the source detail.
hope this helps,
Russ Strong

Thank you, Jenny. I've taken your advice about using the "online images"
option.

Now I have a followup question for anyone: In the "Step 3. Add the Source
Detail Box," what should I put in the "Credit Line" line? Is that where I put
the name of the photographer (for the online image), if known?

Oh, and in the Assigned Sources box, what does the V with the tick boxes under
it stand for?

And just now I tried to use the same source to verify a different life event.
How do I vary the Detail Text without altering the basic source citation? I
didn’t want that to happen, so I told Legacy to save it as a separate source,
and now I have the Detail Text reading the same as the Master Text for the
second life event, instead of just the relevant quotations I chose. Doing
something wrong . . . what?

Thanks again, to all.

When you are selecting the SourceWriter template, one of the options

will be for "online images" and their will be fields for entering the

website information.

There are 2 possible options here. All Master Sources and all Source

Details have a Comments field, so you can use one of those (whichever is

appropriate) to enter the information about the original source. Some

templates will produce a field in the Source Detail named Citation in

which you name the Source being cited by the website creator.

See my first paragraph, except in this instance you will be selecting

"online databse" rather than "online images."

[LegacyUG] SourceWriter: Determining and Defining Types of Sources

2011-05-09 Thread Kathy Horstman
Dear Community,

I've recently started using Legacy 7.5 Deluxe Edition. I chose it in great
part because of the SourceWriter documentation facility. But I have some
questions about how to use it, especially in regard to information I find
online.

If I find a facsimile of a document on the Internet, may I cite it directly
as my source, using one of SourceWriters source types? How does the website
come into it-it wouldn't exactly be the repository, would it, if the
original document were physically available somewhere?

Suppose I accept data supplied by some website creator, on the grounds of a
particular record or source he or she cited. What's the best way in Legacy
to make note of my source's source? (If I simply cite the website, as I
have thus far, I lose track of why I believed the data in the first place).

How about online transcriptions of documents? What about typewritten
transcriptions? They're not the originals, true (and I know how
transcribers can err), but they're better sources, aren't they, than someone
simply asserting, "Obed Edom Jr. died in 1755"? I'd like to know how to use
Legacy to cite them in the proper manner.

I have a lot more questions about how to get the best use out of this
program, but I'll keep this message on topic and save my other queries for
further emails.

Thank you so much for your help. Any way you can advise me on using
SourceWriter will be most appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] RE: New to Legacy

2011-05-09 Thread Joan Kemp
Dear Ron,

I did play with Legacy charting once (I've used Legacy Deluxe for 8 - 10
years now). I've just revisited the charting after your message; it
only seems to display ancestors - I couldn't (admittedly fairly quickly)
see a way of showing all the aunts/uncles/cousins etc of a branch. In
GenoPro, I have master trees for my maternal and paternal ancestors,
then subtrees, tabbed as in MS Excel, for different branches, which are
also hyperlinked to/from the master tree. So I click on 'Elizabeth
Linnell (nee Elliot)' - my G4 grandmother, and move via hyperlink to her
in the Linnell tree; then click again to make another hyperlink hop to
her position in the Elliot tree (her maiden name) and finally another
hyperlink hop back to the master tree. This is superb, and didn't take
too much organising. If a family becomes too prodigious, I can create a
new tree by selecting that family, copy & paste into a new spreadsheet,
name & save it & create any hyperlinks I want. If any distant cousin
wants to see their ancestry, I can send them their part of the tree -
its probably already saved as an Excel-type tabbed sheet, or I can
easily select it & print to Acrobat. All the details of my tree, such as
sources & research notes, are in Legacy, but Genopro wins hands down
when it comes to creating charts and manipulating data.

All good wishes,

Joan

One of the projects the LDS church has on FamilySearch.org is a
community project, exactly like what you are discussing. Go to

[LegacyUG] Need insights - Community Project

2011-05-09 Thread Dick Rhindress
I've been working with small rural community in upstate NY which had lots of
data on the many people who have passed through our boundaries (and a lot
who started and ended here too). Many large families, highly interlocked,
and many small groups and individuals, too. Three hundred years of a
community. Some of our holdings has been entered into computers, but much
of it is still on paper: some original documents and lots of handwritten
"research" notes. From everything I've seen so far, documentation is
minimal. I know this isn't strictly genealogy in the traditional sense, but
it is clearly useful information that can help researchers at least at the
clue level. We need to get it into computers to give it organization and
make it accessible.

I think we can use Legacy to provide a structural framework for organizing
all of this. With it's ability to run on a network plus the IntelliShare
capability seem to make it the uniquely best tool to support a
multiple-person volunteer effort.

I am seeking input and guidance from anyone who has had experience in this
sort of community-wide, and volunteer effort. I'm looking for any insights
and recommendations, experiences, and especially insights on where we might
find that Legacy doesn't handle something well ... the good, the bad, and
the stuff we need to watch out for.

Guess I also am a "lumper".  I use a single source for as many individuals as
possible and the events for those individuals that I can glean from the source.

We should be
able to store the citation once as the lumpers would like, but be able to link
the one source to as many
events as the data support without have to make copies of it in the
database..

Which is exactly what lumpers do, and I am one of
them.

I'm not sure there can be such a thing as "too many". I have 400 Master
Sources (a little over 4,000 individuals) but I might well consider that
someone with only 40 Sources had more than was necessary or advisable if
that person was a splitter, not a lumper.

A long time ago I minored in computer science. The "lumpers" in
this debate make me think of the axioms of systems analysis and design: "Data
should be entered into a system only once" and "data duplication should be
avoided." See Shelly,
Cashman & Rosenblatt. On the other hand, as one who does research
professionally and a "splitter", I
agree with Wikipedia: "A prime purpose of a citation is intellectual honesty: to
attribute prior or unoriginal work and ideas to the correct
sources, and to allow the reader to determine independently whether the
referenced material supports the author's argument in the claimed
way."

We should be able to store the citation once as the lumpers would
like, but be able to link the one source to as many events as the
data support without have to make copies of it in the
database.

Yes, I know I can do a global search and replace. I just think that
that is poor design to the system.
