I have had no problems, and have seen no recommendations not to run the

RED - Maternal Grandfather

All right, let's say the question is: What color is your maternal

I hope that helps, I don't know if it does.

Re: [LegacyUG] printing a book

2011-10-30 Thread Leon Chapman
Not knowing what report you are trying to use, I will give you a general answer.
Before you print report, look for and set the following:
1. Start report and chapters on Odd pages
2. Print double sided - most likely under your printer settings
3. Set Left Margin to 1.25 in - it normally defaults to 1 in

I would suggest you preview report 1st and then only print a 4-5 pages to
verify you got the desired output.

[LegacyUG] printing a book

2011-10-30 Thread Margie Lauer
Hello
I am ready to print a book, which will contain double sided pages, and will
be bound on the left. How do I get the body of the text of the odd
numbered pages to print slightly to the right and the even numbered pages
to print slightly to the left? .. so the pages look properly centered when
the book is bound? If I change the left margin, won't all pages be
affected?
I have looked in "help" and the manual to no avail. They talk about
printing book reports but this is not addressed that I could find.
Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Children showing up from a different marriage

2011-10-30 Thread julia l

I watched Geoff's last "Watch Geoff Live.." webinar. It was great.

There was something I noticed on his screen that I don't see on my screen.
After some children's names, there were listed their parent's name in
parenthesis. Geoff briefly explained that it was just showing e.g. children
from another marriage or adopted children with a different spouse.

Is that a setting that I need to change, or what exactly is it?

I frequently run a data projector (or an additional screen) from the VGA
socket on my Toshiba netbook which is running Windows 7 Starter with 1Gb
RAM.
I have had no problems, and have seen no recommendations not to run the
projector. After all what else would you expect to use the VGA socket for?

2011-10-30 Thread Bob Rowe
What you are talking about does not require fancy graphics. Very high rez
photos should be trimmed down for this purpose, however. The best you are going
to get on a computer screen is 96 dots per inch [DPI]. If you have really high
rez, they are going to be 1200 dpi or there abouts. If you have a lot of photos
like that you will fill a CD very quickly if you are going to share your tree
[and related photos] with family members.

Bob- you are perfectly correct on both counts. But, I am considering the number

I guess I am looking for a Chevy I can plug "large picture files" into. I

You would not use a serial port for a projector. And, I am betting that your

It's not so much a case of what *should* be done as what you prefer to do.

Try both ways and then run a few reports and see which you prefer. Of
particular consideration are pictures, which if added behind the + do
not on all Reports.

What are the pro/cons of entering the burial/cemetery information in the

I think this is the time-tested organizing programs by Mary E. V.
Hill. (A Legacy user!)

Two versions, I prefer the older version which is much simpler (being
phased out, though, so download the PDF now if you're interested.)
Really takes you step-by-step. Maybe I prefer it because I'm an older
version, too?

Windows 7 Starter does not have multiple monitor support so the
projector will not work. Here is the link I used it shows the different
version of Windows 7 and there limitations.

Starter on it. I am leery of that- does anyone have a Netbook with Windows 7
Starter on it, and is running Legacy on it? How well does Legacy run on it?
Several Internet sites said the "Starter" version was really stripped down, so
I want to be certain first. I want to be sure it will accommodate Legacy,
accommodate my photos, etc.

Bob- you are perfectly correct on both counts. But, I am considering the
number of photos I use in Legacy. That would come under "fancy graphics"?
Some of the photos are super high definition. (Too high really, the photo
size is too big!)

I guess I am looking for a Chevy I can plug "large picture files" into.
I was told I could upgrade it, and I am considering that.

RE: [LegacyUG] Windows 7 (Starter)

2011-10-30 Thread Sheri Harris
Robert,

I purchased an Acer netbook in March 2011. It has Win 7 starter along with
MS Office starter. Legacy works just fine and have even been able to
multitask, ie have Legacy, Excel and a browser open. Although I don't have
all my family fines on the netbook, I do have it networked to connect to my
desktop which runs Win XP. I have dropbox and evernote on my netbook,
desktop and smartphone, so I have my basic info when and where ever I need
it.

Hope this helps.

Robert,

I have a Dell netbook with Windows 7 Starter on it and my Legacy works fine
with it. I only use it for travelling and going to the library or
genealogy meetings because the screen is so small and I don't see well, but
other than that, it works fine for me. I use dropbox so it stays up to
date.

2011-10-30 Thread Martha Lou Holland
Vicki, I use the 'User ID' for a numbering system. I am #1, my father is #2,
mother is #3, Father's father is #4, Father's mother is #5, Mother's father is
#6, Mother's mother is #7. The man's number is double on the direct line
ancestor with the wife being the next number. The children are numbered under
the parent in date order, ie, my father would also be listed under his father
as 4.3 because his was the third born child. If you are interested in this
system, please email me and I will send you a print out. Martha

I have an HP netbook with Windows 7 Starter, and Legacy works fine on it. The
netbook just works a bit slower than what you're used to and you can't have
very many programs open at the same time on it, but for working in libraries or
traveling, it's a great resource because it's fairly lightweight.

RE: [LegacyUG] open file

2011-10-30 Thread Alan Pereira
Not sure what you mean by that Randy. Any file that is associated with an
installed program within windows can be opened by that file by double clicking
on the file in windows explorer. By pinning a shortcut directly to that file
onto the windows 7 taskbar, it will open with a single click.

Legacy will not let you open a second Legacy file if one is already open,
except within Legacy by using the Split Screen View or via the "File" menu if
you just want to switch files.

RE: [LegacyUG] Windows 7 (Starter)

2011-10-30 Thread Charles Apple
Robert, this could also indicate a Red Flag. Before deciding check out the
graphics card, processor, and memory capacity. If these meet "Your"
requirements for "Your" specific intended use of the Netbook, then the Windows
Starter OS, or base OS as Bob pointed out, should work just fine. As Bob point
out, Starter is a stripped down version of the Windows OS. Unfortunately, I
have never used Windows 7 starter version, and cannot comment on its
reliability, from experience.

I don't have any first hand experience with this, but I don't see why Legacy
wouldn't work fine on Windows 7 Starter. Stripped down mostly means that the OS
doesn't have all the fancy graphic stuff because of the limited graphics card,
processor, and memory. Legacy doesn't require or use any fancy graphics. It
will run fine on any 'base' machine. I think that "Starter" is a terrible name

Re: [LegacyUG] open file

2011-10-30 Thread Gail in MN
Thanks. I appreciate knowing that I'm not the only one who saw this.
I will wait for an update and until then will use my task bar icon.

Re: [LegacyUG] Windows 7 (Starter)

2011-10-30 Thread Bob Rowe

I don't have any first hand experience with this, but I don't see why Legacy
wouldn't work fine on Windows 7 Starter. Stripped down mostly means that the OS
doesn't have all the fancy graphic stuff because of the limited graphics card,
processor, and memory. Legacy doesn't require or use any fancy graphics. It
will run fine on any 'base' machine. I think that "Starter" is a terrible name
for an 'base' Operating System. I think people see it as being substandard. If
you thrive on all the fancy graphics then I guess it is substandard. A basic
Chevy will take you to all the same places that a Cadillac will.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Windows 7 (Starter)

I am being offered a Netbook for a good price. The problem is it has Windows 7

Thank you.
Robert
