Thank you, Alan and Mary. I think I will do the conversions in the existing file rather than mess around with the GEDCCOM. I appreciate your comments. RE: [LegacyUG] Adding children's birth places to family view
I am sorry that I don't know how to respond to the proper thread. I didn't get any of the responses in my email to just hit "reply", so I had to go to the archives to see if anyone had responded. Thank you for the ideas. I still would like to be able to see the children's birthplaces right on the family view, but am very glad to have a couple of different options! Re: [LegacyUG] Correct location format question
Seems to me that using the GEO location database would produce a standardized name for city, county, state, country. Re: [LegacyUG] Correct location format question
Bill, The correct entry is: Duvall, King, Washington, United States "county" should be added only if you don't know the town, i.e.,: , King county, Washington, United States United States is the format the LDS church uses - not USA. Abbreviations should be avoided to prevent confusion. I live in Redmond, Washington, and if I abbreviate it Redmond, WA, someone may interpret that as Redmond, Western Australia . Locations should be edited using the Master Location List (View > Master Lists). In that list, go to Options > Expand/Contract Location Parts to add or change the country name. If you want to remove "county", go to Search > Search and Replace and using Lists-Location, enter county, (space) for "Find what" leave the Replacement text blank. Search anywhere in field and replace only found text for the other options. Standards for location entry can be found in the book "Getting It Right" by Mary Slawson. RE: [LegacyUG] Correct location format question
This is such a hot topic! If you are trying to conform to FHL standards then Duvall, King, Washington, United States You can contract your locations to get rid of the word COUNTY in all of your entries. While on the Master Location List page Go to OPTIONS Then EXPAND/CONTRACT LOCATION PARTS If you click on CONTRACT LONG LOCATION NAMES it will take the word COUNTY out of your locations You can also add USA, or add United States or remove both on this screen Michele From: runolf...@aol.com [mailto:runolf...@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2012 5:18 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Correct location format question I have been trying to standardize all of my locations in Legacy, they are a mess. RE: [LegacyUG] MRIN filing
Paula, I leave all documents for children in their Parents Folder, however, when and if a child marries I move only the documents that pertain to that particular child to his or her folder. I sure that there are other ways preferred by other researchers, however, this method has worked well for me for many years. In the end, I really think it is personal preference. Replicated! I have the box RINs & MRINs checked. (the "& MRINs" appears to affect nothing) If I also check the box MRIN numbers, the they show up for the marriages in the body of the report, in little characters with the source citation numbers. Brian - are you responding to my bug report? I don't think so, because it was two locations that got combined for me. Just double-checking before I "get excited" that it's resolved. ;) --Paula From: Brian/Support To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Tue, February 28, 2012 1:32:45 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] combining dups in master sources My reminder worked. Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcom file for a specific family surname only - I don't understand how to do it.
I believe someone very knowledgeable here on the list once said you should always import into a new/separate database to "see what you have" and then merge what you want into your "real" database. And thanks, Wendy, for pointing out the View >Tree Finder . found a completely unlinked couple... they've been there since my import from FTM in 2004! ;) --Paula From: Wendy Howard To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Thu, March 1, 2012 2:16:29 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Gedcom file for a specific family surname only - I don't understand how to do it. You need to import that 7000-name GEDCOM file into Legacy, then work with that file to extract the information you want. Say you call it Cousin.fdb for talking about it here. Do you know about Tree Finder in Legacy? View > Tree Finder. Be sure to click on Refresh to update the tree list, as this is not done automatically. This problem with page numbering of source pages is recorded in our problem tracking system. The issue is still shown as outstanding. Is there an (easy) way to list the RIN's of the largest notes? Perhaps the top 10 or 25? One may want to put these into a file that is not in the database.
