Re: [LegacyUG] Search List Question

2012-04-05 Thread Virginia Dunham
When I am working off of a long search list...I "print" it to a
"phantom" printer and then open it in a PDF program...
To keep it simple, I always include the RIN numbers which makes it
easy to pull up the names.
As I work my list, I cross thru the finished ones.

I'm going to the family history library tomorrow and I realize I should have
considered this before butnow I'm in a bit of a hurry.

I used to use a Legacy add on of some sort on a palm device and I don't even
know what I've done with that it's been so long since I used it plus I've been
planning to get families for Legacy anyway so I can use it on my phone.

My question is, for your users of the Families app, how long does it take you
to get your Legacy file synced with the app? Is there a big learning curve? I
just don't know if I'm going to be able to get it done in the morning before we
leave if it's not simple. If it's a little time intensive, I will wait and
just print out some FGS for the families I know that I need.

Thanks for your comments, if anyone sees this tonight :-) Kathy

And that is why I said use the Bookmark on the person that you want to
comeback to and then just call up the bookmark from within the list! The
little book icon in the lower left screen opens the bookmarks and you can
set three people bookmarked on the family view screen so it is just one
click and you are on that person!

Paula and Russ

Thanks for contributing.

The problem is not find out where to restart in the list. As Paula says
I can bookmark or simply make a note of the person.

The problem occurs when I have finished processing that person and want
to move onto the next. "Find Next" doesn't work. It gives me the
second person in the list, not the person following the one I've just
processed.

Yes, I could open the search list, look it up manually to find the next
person and edit them but it is a waste of time and effort when there is
a "Find Next" feature which should be one keystroke away.

Also, when I meander away from the current person (say I get an e-mail
about a different part of my tree) and spend time researching there.
When I've finished I should be able to go "Find Next" followed by "find
previous" to get me back to the person in the list I'm currently
processing. But I can't.

The only solution at the moment is to create the list and then "Find
Next" a couple of hundred times to get to the person, then everything works.

Cheers

Tony

When I'm working in a search list, I tag the individuals in the list
and then work down the list using the tabs on the right.

As I finish the edit, I double click on the "X" to remove the tag.

When I'm ready to pick up again, I just go back to the Name List and
select Search > Show All Tagged and pick up where I left off.

I have mentioned this on the list before. The suggestion I was given, (and I
do do this now), is to work off of the search list. Tag the people and then
search for the tag. Edit the people right from the search list. That way you
can go down the list in order.

Re: [LegacyUG] Handling Photos

2012-04-05 Thread Laird
Teresa,
This is a challenge using Legacy, but think about these ideas, at least it would
all be in one book.

In the Books / Other, publishing center under the Contents Tab
 Add your Descendant Narrative CHAPTER
Next add a Picture Scrapbook CHAPTER (at the bottom of the list.
Although this isn't what you really want perhaps you can make do with this
method.

Also a way to insert a custom chapter is as follows: A little more difficult
thing to think about is the Place Holder CHAPTER. You reserve a set number of
blank pages which can be replaced with something of your choice (photo album?).
But to do this you will have to be creative about producing a PDF file to send
to a publisher like Lulu.com. I have used a free PDF file creator (PDFcreator)
which replaces a printer device, from: http://www.pdfforge.org
It will let you combine multiple documents into one PDF. For example using the
publishing center preview the entire document, Title, TOC, Descendant chapter,
PLACE HOLDER CHAPTER, additional chapters and index. Next in the upper right
side of the preview window under Print: select the Range button. Enter the page
number range from the start of the book to the last page before the place holder
chapter and print a PDF using PDFcreator. Repeat this for the range following
the end of the place holder chapter to the end of the book including the index.
Create a PDF chapter of your choice to replace the place holder chapter. Now
using PDFcreator merge the three PDF files into one file. If you need to create
a Acrobat 4.0 (PDF 1.3) file for Lulu, email me off list and I can send you
setup info for PDF creator to do that.

Tony,
Have you tried using the Set Bookmark/Go to Bookmark feature? You can go to
a person in the middle of the list and then Set a bookmark, then when you
create the new list click options>go to bookmark and the bookmark window
will open and you can choose your person from the bookmark list then when
you go through the tags from there it will find the next tagged person in
RIN order.

I'm probably not explaining my situation clearly.

I realise that when I rebuild a search list I lose the context of the
previous version of the list. It is as if it were a completely new list
(in fact, it is a new list).

My problem is that I don't want to do the usual thing with a new search
list and start at the beginning. I want to start somewhere in the
middle. I want some way to say "Start with this person and then go
forward or backwards from here". The only way I can achieve this is to
start at the front and "find next" a couple of hundred times.

Saving and restoring the list would achieve this, provided the context
of the list was saved and restored together with the list of entries.
The only issue would be how to handle folk in the list who were deleted
before the list was restored; but that must be handled now, since I
could delete someone who is in the current list.

I believe that it is a bug for the context not to be set to the point
where you jump into the list. I'll report it as such and will suggest
the save restore feature as an enhancement.

Cheers

Sherry,

Just so someone there knows, although clicking Reset often fixes the problem,
it is time-consuming to then put everything back the way you had finally had it
set "perfectly" - if you know what I mean. At some point, the answer "click
Reset" is not going to result in customer satisfaction - especially after a
comment like "several of the reports in this build have formatting problems."
Yikes! After all, we are not doing anything differently; Legacy is. Just
sayin'.

Re: [LegacyUG] Family GS & Indiv report come up blank after adding source to event

2012-04-05 Thread Paula Ryburn
Sherry,
Just so someone there knows, although clicking Reset often fixes the problem, it
is time-consuming to then put everything back the way you had finally had it set
"perfectly" - if you know what I mean. At some point, the answer "click Reset"
is not going to result in customer satisfaction - especially after a comment
like "several of the reports in this build have formatting problems." Yikes!
After all, we are not doing anything differently; Legacy is. Just sayin'.

Don't get me wrong: I love the product!!!

As Mike said, anytime you have problems with the formatting of a
report, just click on the Reset button in the lower right corner of
the main report window.

I noticed this morning that it took a couple of clicks and I had to
close Legacy and reopen it for the FGR to format correctly.

Several of the reports in this build have formatting problems, but
it's really an easy fix.

FYI, File maintenance and exporting to a new Family File only affects
the Family File and not any of the features in Legacy. The Master
Lists would have nothing to do with report formatting.

Doing a clean install - i.e., uninstalling Legacy and deleting the
folder - would resolve the problem because you deleted the offending
usr file, thus resetting the report options (which is what the "Reset"
button does). Doing the clean install is like killing a gnat with a
shotgun!

If the reset button and closing and reopening Legacy doesn't work, we
would direct you to delete the specific .usr file - you'll find a list
of which features the usr files relate to in the Help file in Legacy
under "File Extensions"

So I have another question for everyone, and appreciate earlier answers today -
it helped tremendously.

How do you handle photos? For instance I have photos of the village the family
came from in Croatia, and would like to include it in the family "Book". Now I
can put each photo in an individual event so they all print, but that seems
rather cumbersome. What am I missing? I see where I can add an entire photo

the photos in separate files so I have to print them separate?

The purpose of the individual project right now is as follows:

5 Generations in which the oldest generation had 14 children. There will be one
large descendants chart printed in poster form. There will be one printed copy
of a book, with photos and sources. There will be a CD containing said book and
chart given to each of the 14 families to pass down to their own lines. (There
are still 7 of them living, plus one copy will go to the oldest child of those
who have passed on). I would use Passage Express, but there will be no computer
there to give the presentation, and most of those who will receive the CD would
probably not know how to use it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Reminder - Webinar Wednesday

2012-04-05 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
Hey everyone,

Thanks for writing and sharing your feelings. I too share some of your
thoughts and will consider them to continue to improve our future webinar
offerings, but was also pleased/surprised with the number of people who
couldn't get enough of the webinar. Technically (audio) it could have been
better but I learn from each one - always trying to improve the experience
for the future. I did especially enjoy the Q/A session, and I think the
topics in it were what the majority thought the webinar would be more
focused on (myself included).

Having said that, thanks to John and Claire (fantastic researchers!) for
participating in our 58th public webinar - can you believe that? About 90
hours of free instruction. Here's a stat that I still can't believe. In one
webinar alone, we had people from 72 different countries attend. It's been
a joy to help pioneer this medium of genealogical education. Thanks to
everyone who have participated. We've all learned together.

By the way - if you're joining us in May for our 9th annual Legacy
Genealogy Cruise, don't forget our webinar tonight (Thursday). The entire
Legacy cruise staff will be online to answer any last-minute questions.

I'm looking forward to hearing from Malcolm Green in his webinar next
Wednesday on the Families app. Register at
www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/webinars.asp. I understand he'll be giving away
several copies of Families. More than 1,100 have registered so far, so it
you want to join the live session, don't forget to join at least 15-20
minutes early. See you online!

First of all, thank you to Mike and Sherry for your quick responses!! I guess
it's a 'good news / bad news' kind of thing. The good news is  that it doesn't
sound like it 's  my data that is  'glitched' (phew!!) which was really my main
concern -- especially since my backups were getting the same results. I wasn't
sure if I had somehow corrupted something in the data that was creating the
problem with the features. However, so far the reset button is not doing a
thing for me. As long as it's a program glitch I can live with that but having
to close the program each time to reset the formatting is a pain. I'll check
out the *.usr file as you suggested. Ah well, this is the first real problem
I've had with Legacy all these years so I'll just work with it. Thanks again
for your input and next time I'll ask here first before getting out the

I had some initial problems with FGS - pages narrowed and shortened - and had to
resort to hitting the Reset button a couple of times. That seemed to sort my
particular problem out. First time that I've had anything funny happen with this

[LegacyUG] Family GS & Indiv report come up blank after adding source to event

2012-04-05 Thread J&K O'Neill

I have Legacy 7.5.0.180, Mar 29 2012 build running on a Windows 7 laptop - AMD
Phenom II N640 dual-core 2.9GHz w/ 4gb RAM, 64 bit OS .

Last night I discovered that  my Family Group Sheet and Individual Reports were
coming up blank. All other reports seem to be OK and I have to exit Legacy and
re-enter in order for the GS/Indiv reports to repopulate with data. After
experimenting, I think I've narrowed it down to adding a source to an event. I
have tried different events and sources and it SEEMS to be the source that
triggers the problem.

So far I have done the following: (tested after each step but problem was still
there)

1. Run all the file maintenance tools.

2. Run scandisk and other system utilities.

3. Saved as a Legacy file with a new name, imported it, but got same results.
(kept getting the window that asked if you want to save the current event or
import the new one which had nothing in the sentence fields -- I told it to
save the one that was populated with the defaults )

4. Still had the problem so r estored the events Master List.

5. Uninstalled Legacy and copied over ONLY the fdb, fg, and nc files. (did this
twice with and without the tc, ~rc3, ~rgd, ~ppl files)

6. Opened several previous backups but have same problem.

The interesting thing is that after doing a clean reinstall of Legacy I opened
the sample file and the reports were OK.

Opened MY file, reports OK, entered an event, reports OK, added a source -- NO
DATA in the FG/Indiv reports.

Closed my file, opened the Sample file -- NO DATA in the FG/Indiv reports !!!

As I'm having the same issue with some previous backups I don't   know if
something has been corrupted for some time and I just didn't notice it or if
there is something else wrong.

HELP I don't know where to go from here and am hoping someone has an
answer before I contact tech support .

Kathleen

The operative word here is 'rebuild'.

By rebuilding, you lose the record of everything you've done with your list
previously. A facility to Save and Restore a list will not solve your confusion,
because the act(s) are incompatible with rebuilding. I forget, are you using the
Census Report to build your list? If so you can save and restore the search
criteria but not the results.

As others have said, create your list and tag everyone on it. Then, as you work
through the list, untag those who you ascribe a 1911 citation to.

You can of course tag them twice: once for no-1911 and once for not-found. First
run through, tag everyone without a 1911 census. Now, process the list. Remove
the no-1911 tag if you find a source. If not, tag them again as not-found. Next
run through, ONLY SEARCH THE EXISTING SEARCH LIST and exclude those with a
not-found tag.

If you lose the list, then rebuild it from those with a no-1911 tag - you'll get
both those you've already processed and those you haven't.
