Re: [LegacyUG] Search and replace of extra carriage returns in Event-Notes

2012-06-28 Thread Ken McKinlay
Thanks Ron for confirming the issue. I've logged a bug report on the
problem.

I know I can do an SQL query to solve it but I'm trying to avoid that
route since I prefer not going outside the application environment to
fix something that should work in the program.

When my Yahoo account was hacked, besides changing the password, I
removed all my contacts from the contact list and put them in a draft
email - I can copy/paste from it into a new email.

Not a problem for me since I don't initiate emails from my Yahoo
account very much, but at least I don't have to worry about hackers
sending emails from it now.

The person's email account was most likely hijacked. Her email
account on the Yahoo server was compromised - it's not on her computer
- and everyone in her address book got a copy of this.

It happened to me once just before this sort of stuff started happening.

Just ignore it

Maureen needs to change her password and hopefully it won't happen again.

Re: [LegacyUG] Citing website sources

2012-06-28 Thread Kirsten Bowman
Jenny:

It's a pickle. Considering changes we've seen in a few short years, I
imagine that in ten or 20 years more there will be precious few URLs that
will still be meaningful. I'm not such a philanthropist as to hope to leave
behind a search string that can be replicated, nor do I feel inclined to
have a variety of Master Sources with different database titles or URLs to
reflect changes in websites over time. I'm leaning toward editing my Master
Sources to show simply "Ancestry.com" or "FamilySearch.org" to show that I
found the data online. Since I include in the Source Detail the surname or
text both as written and as indexed, a search at those sites (if they still
exist) for the name or a keyword as given in the citation may stand a chance
of being found. For my own purposes in being able to relocate the data if
necessary, I think I'll include the full search string but probably
privatize it since it's a relatively temporary thing.

I still haven't come to grips (or gripes?) with situations where titles of
databases change. It'll be interesting to see responses from others.

There has been some discussion here recently about whether or not/how to
cite website URLs and related matters. What I am never quite sure about
is how to handle situations where a citation one has created in the past

For example, for quite a while it was possible to access records from a
FamilySearch site for which the URL was

is possible to access the same records from www.familysearch.org.

Similarly, Ancestry used to have a database entitled "England & Wales,
Birth Index:1837-1983" and one entitled "England & Waes, Birth Index:
1984-2005". Then all those records were combined into one database
called "England & Wales, Birth Index:1916-2005."

I could give several other similar examples.

So what does one do about one's citations? Just update the title of the
database or the URL of the website and carry on using the same Master
Sources, or create a new Master Source every time there is a subtle
change in the details? If one of the main purposes of a Source is to
allow others to replicate my research, they aren't going to be able to
do that if they try and access http://search.labs/familysearch.org. On
the other hand, if I say I accessed a record on www.familysearch.org on
15 May 2008 people might be very mistrustful of anything I say knowing
that that must be a lie!

Jenny,

I take your point about the confliction between date and the URL
availability. However, it actually does not affect me as I do not fill in
the specific URL in the Master Source, in fact my Master Sources are very
skeleton like (as you know, I am a fairly extreme lumper). The detail URLs
all go in the Repository in the Source Detail.

There is another problem with not updating them and that is the failing URLs
on your website. Search Engines do take into account the number of broken
links when ranking a site, the more broken ones then the lower the ranking,
not to mention the host of irate users!

Hope that helps a little.

Jenny,

This is probably not what you wish. I respect all your posts.
My word isn't worth much, and I will wait for the flame, but I
personally drill it right down to the FHL Film and item, page number.
For me, my descendants will be able to go to that source with a great
deal of certainty.

FHL
Födde 1736-1812, 1814-1861
INTL Film 144842 Items 1 - 4

I work with a company that provides me Parish records. They have scanned
the films from the Swedish National Archives and have their own
numbering system. I can also drill those down to the actual film and
page without using the company so when I stroll into the parish :)

Curve Ball..

I use boards.ancestry.com ... for help with my translations. I just
stick that url and the translation in notes/research. If they disappear,
so what. I was trying a different approach with that in the citation.
Didn't look good.

I think this must have changed. I have a SkyDrive folder on my computer

As it is I have Legacy synced to SugarSync and my other computer and
Legacy backups in Dropbox and all is well. It looks like I could change

[LegacyUG] Citing website sources

2012-06-28 Thread Jenny M Benson
There has been some discussion here recently about whether or not/how to
cite website URLs and related matters. What I am never quite sure about
is how to handle situations where a citation one has created in the past
is no longer *quite* accurate.

For example, for quite a while it was possible to access records from a
FamilySearch site for which the URL was
http://search.labs/familysearch.org. That URL is no longer valid but it
is possible to access the same records from www.familysearch.org.

Thank you everyone for replying and the reason for the delay in responding
is I have received no emails of any activity on list nor that replies had
been posted. I understand how and why some users enter transcribed text into
different fields after reading the replies and adding another source to my
program. I actually work with 4 screens when entering sources. The first
one is the "Individual's Information Screen" where I first add an event.

Then I start creating the source for the event in the "Assigned Sources
for..." field and Enter New Source tab. I'm using the Sourcewriter which I'm
still becoming accustomed to. The Create New Source tab opens the "Add a
Master Source" field Where you begin to describe the source. The "Go to Step
2" tab opens into the part of the citation field and includes the State,
County, Series and Repositories fields and the "Copy of the text from this
master source." This is the "Text" field where all my transcripts were
imported into so I continued to use that field for all later transcripts.
The Edit Source tab in the "Assigned Sources for..." also opens this screen.

The "Edit Source Detail" screen asks for Vo.l and page number, etc. with the
option to enter text and comments as well. After reading the replies and
more threads on the subject I now understand now that the Master Source
screen or what I view as creating the "body" of the source can be used to
create a "Master Source" for documents such as the censuses where the
questions remain the same and then use the "Source Details" screen to cite
the different facts for each individual or family. Having that Master Source
capability would have been very handy when I first started and was
transcribing every census individually!!!

Unfortunately though there will still be the problem when importing to
another program like FTM where the text of the Master Source of being
omitted with the import to those programs that don't recognize that text
field. Most of the documents I work with now, such as deeds and probate
records, would not have a Master Source to begin with since they all vary in
wording or format. I'll have to see if they same problem occurs with
RootsMagic as well. I appreciate your time and assistance! Dawn

Dawn,

Why do you say "deeds and probate records, would not have a Master Source to
begin with since they all vary in wording or format", why not? More often
than not any variations can be included in the Source Detail (citation). I
only have one Master Source for these records (although I tend to use the
Will rather than the probate record). It might be of course be different
elsewhere than England.

Re: [LegacyUG] Adding text details to a source/citation" and exporting GEDCOM issues

2012-06-28 Thread Ron Ferguson
Kirsten,

I have not read Evidence Explained, but happy to accept your account of the
view expressed regarding repository. I could not agree less with the book. I
consider the recording of the repository to be extremely important,
especially when dealing with websites. How many times have we come across a
situation where a record cannot be found on one site, but can on another,
usually due to an incorrect transcription. It could take ages for someone
else to find it again of the repository is not known.

Like you, Kirsten, I will continue to do my own thing!

Bill:

Lots of people struggle over the Repository question. According to
_Evidence Explained_ listing a repository for published items is not
necessary since anyone can trace back and get the item from their own most
convenient source (and things you find online are interpreted as being
"published"). That said, I usually do make a note of where I found
something because it's easier than trying to remember. I just don't
struggle over the format and often make it a privatized note not visible in
the citation itself. If I understand your question, I think the Repository
would almost always go with the Master Source part of the citation. Just
now I can't think of a situation where you'd have different repositories
associated with one Master Source unless perhaps you used FamilySearch for
one census listing and Ancestry.com for another in the same year and
location--but then you're back to not having to list repositories for
published items.

Unlike most Legacy users, I don't create Events for Individual Records.
Most of my documentation is focused on a one-name study and I'm just
recording the basic dry facts (name, birth, death, burial, marriage, and
locations). When researching an individual in depth, I use a timeline
format in Excel. Perhaps others can shed light on your Event question.

Kirsten, that Citation_101 was very helpful.

These are two other elements that I may be confused about. It appears
I am not the only one trying to this out.

(a) Repository, and
(b) Event ... at the bottom of the hierarchy, when applicable.

(level in hierarchy, big picture, on source/citation/transcription )
(1) Repository - very top, very broad level like a building or a web site
(2) Master Source - see your note above
(3) Source Detail - see your note above
(4) Event - may contain transcriptions like US Census data if an
event, could be partially duplicated in Source Detail?

... am I off base in my view? Would like to see your comments on
(a) and (b) if you have a moment. Thanks. Bill

Ken,

You seem to be adopting the correct procedure. You do not specify your other
settings, although in this case it does not matter as I have tried the lot!
I search in the Notes-Research field where I know that I have some carriage
returns, but none were found.

Conclusion: Unless someone can make it work it's a bug and I suggest that
you report it as such (Legacy Home tab - see the box bottom right.)

I did not test the tab search/replace as I haven't got any, perhaps someone
would like to test this?

Is there a way to do a search for extra carriage returns at the start or
end of an event note and replace them with nothing?

I'm using Legacy 7.5.0.191 and the "Search and Replace" menu function
(Ctrl+H) doesn't seem to find any text in the Event-Notes that have the
crlf code in them. I'm using the CR button on that screen to insert the

Susan,

Just to run through the process,

1) If you wish to have a look at what you have got Click Preview, and having
looked, Close it
2) Set the PDF Button
3) Click the Create Button on the top right of the screen, and you will see
a printer start underneath. A new screen will open
4) Select a folder, enter a file name, and then open.
Note: Sometimes the screen which should open for the file name may be
hidden, and the printer just seems to go on for ever, try moving the visible
screen so that you can see it.

Yes, A few years ago I used Skydrive for storage only i.e. backup. In that
context it works well, I now use Dropbox for my current files and, hence it
is also there as a backup.

The reason you cannot use the Skydrive files on Legacy is that they are not
on your machine, which Legacy demands; with Dropbox they still are, of
course, and Dropbox synchronises the ones in your files (on however machines
you have them) with that in the Cloud, Skydrive does not.

Subject: [LegacyUG] File locations

For some time I've been using DROPBOX for a repository for the photos and
other documents for use in Legacy.

Recently I came across an alternative to DROPBOX that I decided to
tryMicrosoft's SKYDRIVE. Reviewing the specs for it it seems to serve
the same function as DROPBOX, but you get twice the storage space (7 gb
vs 2 gb) for the same price...FREE! I installed it and have been playing
around with it using a PLAY VERSION of my master Legacy database.

As noted the first thing I did was make a copy of my master Legacy file
to a new location from the real one. I used the EXPORT - Legacy File
option rather than using the EXPORT - GEDCOM option.
Next I copied a few photos from the hundreds I have to this same new
location to use for testing purposes.

Then I opened the Legacy PLAY VERSION went to OPTIONS - Customize -
Locations and changed the PICTURE FILE to the path to SKYDRIVE where I
put my test photos and SAVED. Nowhere was there a reference to the path
for the REAL photo file.

I was surprised to find that photos of individuals NOT in the test photo
file still show up! When I edit one of them it still shows the path to
the real file, not the SKYDRIVE path. I would have thought, and was
assuming, any photos not in the test file would have the ? and message
"file not found"!

I went to an individual in the PLAY Legacy version who had a photo in the
PLAY photo file and attempted to add their photo again. After clicking on
the Picture Gallery Icon on the FAMILY screen; Picture and redirecting
the path to the SKYDRIVE folder for the Test Photos I added a picture
from that Test group. When I EDIT that new addition it (correctly)
identifies the path as being that of the SKYDRIVE folder.

The question/issus here is ONE - why do the REAL photos remain in tact?
TWO why isn't everything directed to the new location path I specified in
the OPTIONS?

I just want to be SURE this SKYDRIVE thing works before (possibly)
committing everything to this new cloud repository procedure only to find
out it's not working like I thought/assumed.

Anybody have any thoughts or experience using SKYDRIVE??

I'm not sure either!

Take, for example, the thread begun by Michelle Lewis, concerning the now,
non-operational Search the IGI function. All I've seen are two replies: one
from
Ron Taylor and one from you. No original message from Michelle! Mind you, at
the
time of writing, Michelle's message hasn't reached the archive either. So
where
did Ron get Michelle's message from?

I don't follow your reasoning there. Any 2 documents of the same type
that have some commonality such as the area (state, county, city etc) or
jurisdiction where they were issued should have the same Master Source.

Anyway, you can't have Source Detail without first having a Master
Source to which to attach it. There might be instances where you have
one document/one Master Source/no Source Detail.

"Re: [LegacyUG] Adding text details to a source/citation" and exporting GEDCOM issues

2012-06-28 Thread dedted 29

Thank you everyone for replying and the reason for the delay in responding is I
have received no emails of any activity on list nor that replies had been
posted. I understand how and why some users enter transcribed text into
different fields after reading the replies and adding another source to my
program. I actually work with 4 screens when entering sources.  The first one
is the "Individual's Information Screen" where I first add an event.

Then I start creating the source for the event in the "Assigned Sources for..."
field and Enter New Source tab. I'm using the Sourcewriter which I'm still
becoming accustomed to. The Create New Source tab opens the "Add a Master
Source" field Where you begin to describe the source. The "Go to Step 2" tab
opens into the part of the citation field and includes the State, County,
Series and Repositories fields and the "Copy of the text from this master
source." This is the "Text" field where all my transcripts were imported into
so I continued to use that field for all later transcripts. The Edit Source tab
in the "Assigned Sources for..." also opens this screen.

The "Edit Source Detail" screen asks for Vo.l and page number, etc. with the
option to enter text and comments as well.  After reading the replies and more
threads on the subject I now understand now that the Master Source screen or
what I view as creating the "body" of the source can be used to create a
"Master Source" for documents such as the censuses where the questions remain
the same and then use the "Source Details" screen to cite the different facts
for each individual or family. Having that Master Source capability would have
been very handy when I first started and was transcribing every census
individually!!!

Unfortunately though there will still be the problem when importing to another
program like FTM where the text of the Master Source of being omitted with the
import to those programs that don't recognize that text field. Most of the
documents I work with now, such as deeds and probate records, would not have a
Master Source to begin with since they all vary in wording or format. I'll have
to see if they same problem occurs with RootsMagic as well. I appreciate your
time and assistance!  Dawn

Rather depends, I think, whether you are greating a Genealogy or a
Family History. When, where, how and why people travelled is definitely
part of their Family History and helps to put meat on the bones and give
a rounded picture of someone.

I must say I was somewhat concerned when Brian said that a change had
been made because of a Problem Report from "a user who uses very verbose
descriptions of their photos." It was "A USER" which worried me.

Are changes made because it is known that ONE person does something
which might only be done by a handful of others? Surely, unless there
is an obvious error in the programming things should only be changed
because A GREAT MANY people ask for a new feature or a change to an
existing one and there is a consensus that it would be an improvement?

This particular example, of a neat and economic layout of scrap-book
pages no longer being possible, does seem to be a retrograde step.
