Re: [LegacyUG] Date question --

2012-08-24 Thread RHS Consulting
Circa is very much alive and well and used in the entire metric world. It
is abbreviated ca. and is used all over Europe. I use it consistently, even
in my US writings. Abt. disturbs me as it is always capitalized just like
Btw. and Bef. A lower case (abt - btw - bef) would serve Legacy better
other than at the beginning of a sentence.

Re: [LegacyUG] Date question --

2012-08-24 Thread Ron Ferguson
Bill,

They mean exactly the same thing, just different languages. However, I find
it quite useful to have two abbreviations meaning exactly the same thing. As
you may know, the English BMD Government Record Office (GRO) indexes are
grouped into quarters, and Legacy does allow these to be recorded as Q1, Q2
etc.. I do not like this method, and prefer to use the GRO practice of using
the last month of the quarter viz. March, June etc.. By using "Cir"
exclusively for these dates eg. "Cir Mar 1900" I immediately know that I
have a GRO reference for these, as all other approximate dates are of the
form "Abt Mar 1900".

As I never publish my estimated dates (I want them blank), in my records
they are enclosed in privacy brackets. This serves two purposes, a) they are
not published and b) I know they are estimated - hence no need for "Est".

[LegacyUG] Date question --

2012-08-24 Thread Tony Rolfe
I use Abt when there is some evidence to support that date. E.g. the
1861 census recorded him as being 7 years old. I would say born Abt 1854.

I use Est when there is no evidence, but I want to put something in the
date field. E.g. A marriage record says that John's father was James.
That's all I know about James, but I know John was born in 1867 so I
will guess that James was roughly 25 years old when John was born and
use Est 1845. I tend to round Est dates to the most likely multiple of 5.

I think circa is a synonym for abt. I don't use it.

I may be wrong, but I don't think there is any hard and fast rule about
this. Just pick a method, be consistent and document it so others can
follow your reasoning.

Cheers

Tony

RE: [LegacyUG] Name / Nickname entry / 2nd SURNAME entry

2012-08-24 Thread Denise Moss-Fritch
Good Day Bill,

How you might handle a name change in Legacy would depend upon whether this was
a legal or common law change.

If legal (at least under today’s procedures), that would involve a county court
hearing (usually Superior). Legal name changes also involve publication in the
legals section of a local newspaper. The court could tell you which newspaper
would have been used. If legal, I would include an Event/Fact item for a court
record of the surname change, along with an AKA listing to identify the other
surname. The court records would also tell you the ‘why’ of the surname change.

If common law, that might be a bit more difficult. You will have the 1940
census, and maybe the 1930 census if the surname was used prior to that
enumeration, to give you some information (for example, occupation). Depending
upon when your ancestor registered for Social Security would identify whether
you will find any information about such a surname change. If the person lived
in a large city, you might consider using directories for that city. With a
common law name change I would use only an AKA reference with a note
identifying when the surname began being used.

Best,

Denise L. Moss-Fritch

I have been using Legacy aka's for spelling variations and nicknames but when a

feel right.

I don't have a year yet but have a range of sometime in the late 1920's after

2012-08-24 Thread mbstx
I have a similar situation with 3 great uncles, each of whom changed their surname to something different than the others.I've handled it two ways, both in the main surname field, as I don't consider a surname change the same as an aka.Martin Saretzki/SmithMartin Saretzki [[later Smith]]I'm not crazy about either, but having both names in the main surname field makes them, and particularly their descendants, easier to track.I also added a name change event for all 3 and their wives and children, with documentation for their petitions to change their names between 1900 and 1920.Marianne-Original Message-

If you know when he decided to change his surname you could add a "Name

Go to "view", then "master lists", then "location". Click on "options" to the
right, and then on "expand/contract location parts".

Make sure the "all locations in list" is marked under "Records to Change",
and the "Expand Long Location Names and contract Short Location names is
marked" under the "Action to take".

Check the "Add, 'United States' under the "USA Country Names". Click
"Continue" in top right and ta-da, it's done!

WW I. Maybe he had to prove something for social security enrollment in 1936?

How do you handle in Legacy an individual who has a birth SURNAME that he

I have been using Legacy aka's for spelling variations and nicknames but
when a person changes their SURNAME, how do you handle that? Same way? It
does not feel right.

Put the nickname in quotes eg. Leslie “Sammy” James Gardener. When printing
reports etc. you are given the option of using the name in quotes when the
person is referred to and also of removing the quotes (they are not mutually
exclusive). You could also have for example William Arthur “Arthur” Ferguson
for when a person uses a second name rather than the first.

Thank you so much for this, I too have relatives with nicknames and this works
great. I guess you could also use it for the derivative of a name, such as
James “Jim”, Henry “Hank” etc.

Go to "view", then "master lists", then "location". Click on "options" to the
right, and then on "expand/contract location parts".

Make sure the "all locations in list" is marked under "Records to Change", and
the "Expand Long Location Names and contract Short Location names is marked"
under the "Action to take".

Check the "Add, 'United States' under the "USA Country Names". Click
"Continue" in top right and ta-da, it's done!

RE: [LegacyUG] Name / Nickname entry.

2012-08-24 Thread Michele Lewis
Nope. I never put nicknames in the given name field. HOWEVER, I hand type
reports so I will mention the person first as “Leslie “Sammy” James Gardener
and then every subsequent mention it will be just Sammy. It makes the report
sound more personal.

It depends on how you use your research. The standard is, ALL alternate names
go in the AKA field but there isn’t a genealogy police squad that will hunt you
down and pull your fingernails out :) I keep my data conformed to the
standards because I am OCD and I share my data with other researchers that keep
to the standards.

I know how it’s meant to be done using aka’s but does anyone add nicknames to
the primary given name field?

All my uncles were routinely known by their nicknames even with family & most
people not even knowing their real given names. So to take one uncle as an
example, if I enter “Leslie James Gardener” it draws blank stress from all the
relatives. If I enter “Leslie (Sammy) James Gardener” they all go aahhh and the
penny drops.

Any thoughts please?

I would go with your last option. You could always write in the
Comments field that this was supplied in response to a request for a
Marriage Certificate if you think that might clarify the matter and
assist a future researcher wanting to verify your Sources.

My research is about 95% UK and I only have 3 Basic Sources now, having
converted all the rest to SourceWriter. And I will convert those 3 in
due course.

I think some people don't realise that you don't have to fill in every
field on the template and you can ignore the field names if you wish.
Take the Generic, Manuscript template. The fields on the Master are
"Collection" and "Respository" - doesn't mean you can't enter something
like "Auntie Fanny's Recipe Book" as the Collection and ignore the
Repository if you wish. Then the fields for the Source Detail are Item
Title, Item Date, Item Type and Item No. If those fields don't suit the
item you are citing, just ignore the last 3 and write something
meaningful in the first field - you could write a whole paragraph in the
style of a Basic Source Citation if you wished.
>
> Even it had a "personal research notes" or "transcribed notes" option

I'm not quite sure how such notes would be used as Sources - surely the
Source would be the documents/films/websites/whatever that you consulted
and from which you made notes and the notes would be added to the Text
or Comments fields? However, if you wanted to use such options they
would fit very neatly into the Collection field of the template I
mentioned above.
