Re: [LegacyUG] Trellis Chart

2012-09-09 Thread Les Williamson
Hi Folks,

I received an email mailshot from Prodgeny before this list appeared. I have
version 3 and was offered a 40% discount to upgrade, which I "took
advantage" of because I have been keen to be able to use the matrix style
chart (Prodgeny call it Trellis).
I have a large main database and when using it to view the Trellis chart it
is like watching paint dry as it gathers the names. I tried it using a
smaller family file (about 200 names) and it loaded very quickly.
There is a company called GeneaQuilts, who might just be the originator of
the system and offer a free download and show very good examples of large
and small files. I have not downloaded their program yet, however I am
tempted.
I had emailed Legacy a while ago about the possibility of them adding it to
their charting program, and they informed me that it was something they were
considering.

was in version 4 of the Charting Companion.

Hi Tim,

Yes, the Trellis cart is new, however it is a part of Charting Companion
according to the information at the Prodgeny Software web site.
Unfortunately the site does not state whether this chart is an addition to
version 3, or is part of a new version 4 release. I am hoping for a bit more
information from the company.

RE: [LegacyUG] Show me your printer

2012-09-09 Thread Lee Bruch
On your printer choice, select one of your printers as the default printer.
It's not a Legacy problem. It's a problem with how your computer is set up.
Many programs render reports (even on the screen), etc. based on what works
with your default printer.
At lease, that's how it works in the PC world ... don't know about the Linux
world

Re: [LegacyUG] Trellis Chart

It was not in my version 3 but is in Version 4. I just downloaded the
new upgrade and tried it. With a little over 58000+ names in my file,
the chart is projected to be 178 pages wide by 798 pages long for the
all inclusive. I tried to just do a Trellis for one person (my
great-grandfather) in my family but it seems to include all of the
relatives of that one person. I told it to only do 4 generations.
Definitely not a chart print for me. More than a couple of generations
and it is hard to read.

mistake, When you do a master list cleanup and you hit proceed, a popup box
comes up that says "Would you like to resent all Event Sentences to their
default wording?" and you have to answer yes or no. One mistake her could
pretty much ruin your day :)

[LegacyUG] Trellis Chart

2012-09-09 Thread Tim Rosenlof
Prodgeny Software, the creator of a few Legacy addons (Legacy Charting
Companion, Map My Family Tree, Genlines), has created a new 'all in one'
chart.

 From their webpage:

" The Trellis chart is a new way to tell the story of your family.
Unlike traditional box charts, the Trellis can show all the people in
your tree, even those who are not in the direct bloodline. Your
ancestors and descendants are listed by row within their generation.
Members of a family are grouped by columns."

Re: [LegacyUG] How to lump census records

2012-09-09 Thread JLB
I don't know if this is what's called lumping or splitting.

I do, as examples:

Illinois, Mercer, Millerburg: 1870 U.S. Federal Census
or
England, Surrey, Clapham, St. James Parish: 1881 England Census

The transcription goes into 'actual Source text' under Source Detail, as
well as into the Event notes for each person in the census.

If I'm interested in looking at the actual file, I type the person's
name into Search on Windows7, and it appears in a nano-second. Keywords
(in this case, people's names) have been previously embedded in all
documents so the search results bring up a filtered list regardless of
where the files are on my computer.

It really is quite simple. You could try it a few times on the Sample
file or a copy of your Family file.

Are you sure about that? There is a checkbox for sorting Events by date
but I don't remember seeing one for returning Event Sentences to
default. (I don't do File Maintenance very often, though!)

Jenny,
I read about how y'all do this (changing the way things are worded) but I have
never even tried it. It seems too advanced to me :) I would be afraid that
I would accidentally change it back to the default wording when I do a file
maintenance (There is a checkbox for this and it defaults to checked).I have
used the override before though and just typed in what I wanted it to say.

You could edit your Event Sentence so that instead of reading something like
[HeShe] resided at [Desc] on [Date] in [Place] it reads [HeShe] resided at
[Desc],[Place] on [Date] which would give a neater output, I think.

Just for the sake of avoiding confusion I will point out that no images
are ever "stored within Legacy." Legacy only holds the links to images
that are stored on your computer or other storage device.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to lump census records

2012-09-09 Thread Alan Pereira
I am a Lumper. I use one source for a Census year and Country e.g Census 1841
UK, Census 1900 USA
Although I suspect that were I based in the USA I would use "Census Year State
County"
I do not store census images within Legacy, instead I store the Full Census
transcript and a note identifying where I have stored the original image e.g

Census 1871 UK: RG10/232/26/46: Registration District & Civil Parish of
Pancras. Sub-district of Camden Town. Parliamentary Borough of Marylebone.
Ecclesiastical Parish of St.Stephens. Schedule 348.
53 College Street West
Hannah Pereise HeadUnm 24 Laundress Middx.,
St.Pancras
Edward do Son do1 do,do
Schedule 349.
Thomas Pereise HeadMar 31 Music Smith Middx.,
St.Pancras
Sarah do WifeMar 24 Laundress do,do
Sarah do DaurUnm 11 do,do
William do Son do8 Scholar do,do
Johndo do do6 do,do
Thomas do do do5 do,do
George do do do2 do,do
see genealogy\Census1871\PereiraThomas18600101HullSarah.jpg

If the Image is for a Family, then the Transcript is in the Parent's marriage
notes and all sourced events (Occupation, Residence) are pointed to that
location [in this example Thomas would have an Occupation event as a "Music
Smith" located in 53 College Street West... Source Census 1871 UK detail=see
marriage notes
The children would have a residence of 53 College Street West using the same
source but detail=see marriage notes of parents.
Should an individual not be with their family then the census transcript would
be in their Genereal Notes using the same method.
The Genealogy folder is a sub folder of my filing system and can be on whatever
drive I choose to use (Not the System Drive and by inference, not the Legacy
folders)

I try and avoid images except where I want to show pictures of individuals in
Charts. [In case I want to change my filing system]
I only use Basic sources so that I am not troubled by importing and exporting
my file via GEDCOM.
I hide General and Marriage notes when publishing tree information on the web
as well as source repositories.

Welp...

I am a huge splitter. I have over 200 census records just for the 1880 US
Census. How would a person go to the original document without all the
information to do so ?

[Items, not necessarily in order]

1880 U.S. Census
Spring, Sanpete County, Utah
[ED] 123, page 456
Dwelling 789, Family 987
National Archives microfilm L6, roll 123

[My Citation here]

That way someone will be able to go right to the source. You can give credit to
the companies that provide the information. Example:
Ancestry.com, FindMyPast.com, TimsGarage.com

Each family (dwelling) has their own. Am I nuts, others say yes.

I put the street address in as a residence event:

Event/Fact: Residence

The output will be:

RE: [LegacyUG] proper format for Washington, DC

2012-09-09 Thread Michele Lewis
I put street addresses as residence events. I do not put them in the location
field.

Not to mention street addresses. Almost all my relatives lived in Philadelphia,
and street addresses are essential.
I have one grandfather who moved his family at least 15 times in less than 20
years. Without street addresses I am lost.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to lump census records

2012-09-09 Thread Marli Yoder
I do the same-but...
Missouri, St. Louis 1870 Federal Census
that way all of my census info shows by state, county, and year in the source
list. I use Source Writer
Marli Yoder
A & M Farms
Eureka & Sturgeon Missouri

Lumpers, how do you lump your census records?

I use one census source for each year and since the U.S. Census information
resides at the National Archives in Washington D.C., it doesn’t really matter
where you found it, the repository I use is “on-line data base”.

Example:
Master List name:  1860 Microfilm of U.S. Federal Census
Publication Facts:  Original data: 1860 U.S. census, population schedule. NARA
microfilm publication M653, 1,438 rolls. Washington, D.C.: National Archives and
Records Administration, n.d.
