Re: [LegacyUG] FGS Report

2012-10-24 Thread Leon Chapman
Daphne:

It appears to me that you are going back in time about 15-20 years before
genealogy software could write and publish reports.

Have you tried the Publisher in Legacy?

It can combine Descendant reports, Family Group Sheets, Chronology reports,
scrapbooks, ancestor charts, 4-5 level ancestor Tree, blank pages for
chapters where you can insert your specific informaiton or stories. Legacy
will use all of the data in your Legacy file, the notes, the events of
people into a well organized report. All of these reports are combined
into a book / pdf file with an Table of contents at the befinning, title
page, Introduction page, etc, along with all the reports, a complete index
of alphabetical names and pages references, and a complete index of
locations used in your book. Legacy also sequentially numbers all the
pages across of the various reports automatically for you.

I have written 3 books using the publisher in Legacy and published them on
Lulu.com in a hard back 8.5x11 book. Two of the books were about 400 pages
and the 3rd one was close to 800 pages. I am currently writing a 4th book
that will be about 400 pages of my daughter-in-laws family.

I will admit that had had to take the Legacy generated PDF file and use an
app to converter it to a Word file that I then did specific inserting of
pages where I had left blank chapters in the Legacy publisher. After
my limited edits were complete, then I saved it as a PDF file and sent it
to the publisher. I did the color cover on-line at Lulu.com and was very
happy with the results. The books when printed in B&W with color hard back
covers only cost about $25-35 apiece.

Probalby too much information, but I would suggest you try using the Legacy
publisher, you might like it.

The ffirst series of cds is excellent and i learned more from the "watch Geoff

giveaways but reasonably priced particularly if you use a discount code from a

The RTF specification does not support the graphics lines used in the
FGS in Legacy so you cannot export the FGS report in RTF format. Will
InDesign accept the PDF format output from Legacy?

[LegacyUG] FGS Report

2012-10-24 Thread Daphne Eze
I'm using Adobe Indesign to layout a family history book that keeps
track of descendants of my gr gr grandfather.
=
Is there any way to save it as a rtf that can be opened in ms word?

Or is there a way to change the layout of the the report?

Or is there a legacy file that I could open in ms access and change the
layout there then use it in Legacy?
=
I would want to make the report a little bit prettier. I can do it in
Indesign but that would mean retyping all the info.

I've looked at other programs to see if I could find one to do that.
Gramps will, but it doesn't import the userID and I can't modify the
reports until they are all generated and in ms word, then each report
for each family has to be modified. I have a very large family!

I'm using a variation on the "d'Aboville System"
http://familypedia.wikia.com/wiki/Genealogical_numbering_systems

The number system looks like this
0.0 Prgenitor
 1.0 Child
 1.1 Grandchild
 1.2 Grandchild
 2.0 Child
 2.1 Grandchild
 2.1.1 Gr grandchild

etc.

Can anyone suggest anything? I can do some programming.

Thanks
Daphne

Re: [LegacyUG] Webinair to use Legacy?

2012-10-24 Thread Wendy Howard
On the webinars page (http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/webinars.asp) look
for the "Watch Geoff Live" sessions, where Geoff shows how he handles
entering data from a document he's recently received. There are five of
these at the moment, you can watch a preview online for free, and will
have to purchase the CD(s) if you want to see more.

I've watched some (if not all, I can't remember now) of these, and
they're very good. Even if you think you know everything you think you
need to know about the program, it's interesting to see how someone else
handles things.

There are also training videos available. See
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Videos.asp The first in "Legacy Family
Tree Video Training Series" volume 1 (plus some others further down the
page) can be watched online for free, the rest are available for sale.

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Legacy will run on Windows 8 as long as it's not Windows 8 RT for ARM
processors.

You'll find Windows RT on tablets, phones and possibly some netbooks.

Legacy will not run on iPad, but you can use Families to use your
Legacy data on the iPad, synching it between the PC and iPad using the
Families Sync program..

There is a separate "Sync" executable you download and put on your Windows
PC. You run that program whenever you want to transfer a Legacy database
 in either direction.

Note that it doesn't really merge databases. It simply transfers the
entire database. I never make updates to my data on my PC and iPhone at
 the same time.

I am unsure as to which o/s will be on the tablet, although it may well be
Win8, you must, therefore, make sure that it will allow normal Windows
compatible software to run on it.

One other important factor to check is that it has enough memory, both on the
hard drive and RAM for Legacy (and any other programs you may wish to download)
to run. Off-hand I am not quite sure how much you need (I *think* 2GB RAM) but
the figures are given on the Legacy website, probably on the download page.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ipad App for legacy

2012-10-24 Thread MJ SA
Thanks Don, but that is not my question. My question, if I was going
to buy the IPAD is how to transfer the data, because at Best Buy they
said data could not be transferred, only pictures. A new IPAD is
coming out on Nov 6. I am going to stick with what I know, I will buy
an ultrabook with Windows 8

On the App for the IPAD, how do I load my family tree that was on a
Windows computer. Is it easy to do?

Re: [LegacyUG] Ipad App for legacy

2012-10-24 Thread Don Hendershot
The data itself can be transferred to your iPad; not just the pictures. The
real question is "Is there a version of Legacy available that will work on the
iPad and, therefore, allow you to use that data?".

Either way, you'll need to learn how to use a new Operating System.

My laptop crashed last night. I went to Best Buy to buy an ultra book,
than they talked me into getting the IPAD. I asked them if data can be
transferred from the PC to the IPAD they said NO, only pictures can be
transferred. So than I went back to looking at laptops and they
showed me the new Windows 8 that can't be sold til Friday. The
keyboard folds back and it is like using the Ipad. So I will go back
on Friday and get it. But another email just talked about different
operating systems with Windows 8, so now I don't know what kind of
Windows 8I looked at.

Re: [LegacyUG] Report Marriage List

2012-10-24 Thread Ron Ferguson
I agree. All too often members of this, and many other lists, do not say what
they are actually looking for, although I am certainly not saying that it
applies in this case.

At one time I would try and guess what was the actual point of the question, as
indeed, some still do, however, these days I almost always just try to answer
the question as written. Saves an awful lot of time thinking!!

2012-10-24 Thread Brian/Support
A list of the children from the marriage is the major item that jumps to
mind.
Most of the rest of the data is about the people such as Birth dates,
Bapt/Chr, Death and Burial, Parents and other spouses but when printed
from the marriage list those are all in one concentrated area. When
printed from a search list the husband and wife are not together, unless
their names or RINs group them that way.

The data you can select for a person is a much longer list but the
grouping is not by married couples.

What 'data' is included in the Marriage List besides the names and the

RE: [LegacyUG] Windows 8 and Legacy

2012-10-24 Thread Paul Gray
Thanks, Paul. That detail is extremely helpful. It remains to be seen, I guess,
whether Tel Gen will see sufficient market potential to release a Windows 8
(probably RT) compatible version of Families. It looks like most tablets and
smartphones would run RT, I would think the market for an expensive tablet that
can run full blown Windows 8 would be limited.

I have no plans to buy a new desktop/laptop, or upgrade my current computer
from Windows 7, but it’s nice to know that it won’t be an issue.

You are basically correct here as are the other answers but to add a little
clarity (I hope)...

Yes, Legacy does run on Windows 8 on a PC (I'm doing it) as will most all
"regular" programs that have run under Windows 7. A few programs, like those
that have special graphic needs, may need updated drives but those should be
more an exception rather than the rule. All my core apps, Quicken, Office
2010, Browsers, Legacy, etc have been fine.

Now, regarding the two versions of Windows 8, that is also correct. There will
be 'standard' Windows 8 and then Windows 8 RT. On Friday, the Standard Windows
8 for PC will be released. The table that Microsoft releases on Friday will be
running Windows RT. Here is the difference (as I understand it so far)

Windows RT will run any app that has been specifically designed for Windows 8
and/or RT. So, for those "new" apps, you will be able to run them on any
Windows 8 / Windows RT tablet, PC, or phone. A Windows RT tablet or phone will
NOT run apps that have been specifically designed for that OS.

In January or February of 2013, Microsoft is supposed to release a table that
will be running the full blown version of Windows 8. That device (which will
be expensive) WILL run programs that were designed for Windows 7 and prior.

So, it's a two step process. If you want to jump into Windows 8 on your PC,
you can do that now and still run all your old apps. As I mentioned before,
I'm running Windows 8 on my PC at home and Legacy and my other related
genealogy programs all seem to work fine.

If you want the combined PC/Tablet/Phone experience across all your programs
you'll need to wait until the new tablet is released in 2013.

From what I have read there are going to be two different Windows 8,
one will be for PC's and the other for tablets (there are different
processor chips involved). I have not read anything that makes me think
that applications which will work on the PC version will also work on
tablets.

I do not plan on changing to Windows 8 on my PC, do not own any tablet
and have no plans to acquire one.

Legacy will only run on proper Windows 8, Windows RT (which will come

Re: [LegacyUG] Ipad App for legacy

2012-10-24 Thread Don Hendershot
I have the Families App on my iPhone and love it!

There is a separate "Sync" executable you download and put on your Windows PC.
You run that program whenever you want to transfer a Legacy database in either
direction.

Note that it doesn't really merge databases. It simply transfers the entire
database. I never make updates to my data on my PC and iPhone at the same time.

If you are referring to the Families app from TelGen, the companion Families
Sync app that you use to create the file for your mobile device supports
creating the file for both Apple devices and Android devices. I have a Windows
