[LegacyUG] Gedcom size

2013-01-15 Thread Sam Franc
Is there any way to export to gedcom but limit the number of generations
that are included?
To say 15 or 20 generations.
I would like to make a smaller file to send to someone.
Sam

The same can be said for New Zealand addresses and electoral rolls,
should you come across these. Electoral boundaries are reviewed
regularly (as frequently as every three years between elections, if
thought necessary) and bear little relation to administrative boundaries.

When I'm noting an entry in an electoral roll (as an event/fact) I put
the electorate name in the Description field, and all other
distinguishing features for that person (such as occupation and the name
used if it varies from the full name I have recorded) in the Notes field.

I've edited the sentence definition, if all fields contain data, to read:

[EventName]: In [Date] [FirstName] was enrolled in the Electoral roll,
in the [Desc] electorate; [HisHer] address was given as [Place]. [Notes]
[Sources]

(BTW, I'm on of those people who puts full addresses in the Location,
rather than the street detail in the Address.)

For one person in my file, Francis Hannah AUSTIN, an event I've entered
reads like this:

In 1893 Francis was enrolled in the Electoral roll, in the Wellington
electorate; her address was given as Woolcombe Street, Wellington, New
Zealand. Her name is given as Francis AUSTIN, occupation Tailoress. (1)

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

Re: [LegacyUG] Format for Australian addresses

2013-01-15 Thread Paul Kean
G'day Lavern,

The district and subdistrict you mention relate only to electoral issues and
not to common or postal usage. In Australia we have only three levels of
address - suburb, state and country. These days we would also have a postal
code (called 'Postcode here) but this may not have existed in 1963.
So this person's address would have been written as :
    Name
    83 Edward St
    Redfern [Postcode] NSW
    Australia.

Of course, as Redfern is a suburb or Sydney, such a resident may have stated
that they lived in 'Sydney', depending on to whom they were talking.

Historically, the elctoral information is most likely correct but fairly
useless today as electoral boundaries change frequently and the same address my
now be in a different district.

Thanks, Jenny.  How you handle it certainly takes care of the problem.
I just didn't know how important the district/subdistrict was, but since I
have saved images, guess I'm
covered!  :-)

I have used the Australian Electoral Rolls as a Source for an Address
Event and put the full address in the location field.  (Full address

being Street, Town, State, Country and not including the District and
Subdistrict.  I have copied all the information into the Text field of
the Source Details and also attached the image, so the
District/Subdistrict information is there if needed, but doesn't appear

as part of the Event where I don't think it is.

[LegacyUG] Format for Australian addresses

2013-01-15 Thread Tony Rolfe
Australian Street addresses are, for mailing purposes, formatted as
follows:

House name, unit no/street no, street name
town, State, Post Code

Omit the house name if there isn't one. Omit the unit no and the "/" if
it isn't a unit. Omit the post code from historical sources, because
they wouldn't have used it.

So, if you are putting the whole thing into a location, use the following
for the long and short locations

83, Edward Street, Redfern, New South Wales, Australia
83 Edward Street, Redfern, NSW

If you are putting it in an address

Address 83 Edward Street
CityRedfern (or possibly Redfern, Sydney)
State/Prov New South Wales
Country Australia

Hope that helps

Tony
