[LegacyUG] My legacy won't back up
I did several hours of adding photos to my genealogy today. Upon finishing I attempted to back up my work. My back up was not created, there should be 2 new zipped folders. I did notice my date on the .fdb file changed to a current date. Why will my file not backup and how do I fix this? Re: [LegacyUG] changing the Master Source
I have not tried this but it should work Go to View > Master Lists > Source Select the source you created in error. Click the Show List button to see who uses that source Use the tagging button to add a tag to everyone who uses the source There is a button on that show list screen which will delete the source and all references to it. Create the new source using the correct template Copy that source to the source clipboard Tools > Advanced Tagging Which Records to use tab Assign to all individuals with the tag you used above Where to assign (this may be a problem and invalidate the easy part) You mention a naturalization record. If you used that as the source for an event and apply the advanced tagging to events the source will be added to ALL events for everyone with the tag. There is no way to selectively apply the source to only a event of a certain type. If you used it for one of the other options on that assignment screen it will apply the source only to that data for the people in the list. (Multiple selections are allowed). Re: [LegacyUG] Merge
<> Legacy's merge feature is one of the main reasons I am a fan. Before Legacy, to merge two files (you should look at the GEDCOMs before you merge, and clean up locations, names, sources - whatever - in the form of files, then drag and drop) I would have the program find duplicates, then present them to me. There was a specified number they found that did not change, but only about half of the merged were found. I would look at each merge and see what other family members needed merging, then write down the RIN numbers of the pair. Legacy took care of that. Now, when I do a drag and drop on two files that contain much of the same people, I will manually merge one couple. Legacy looks around at all the relatives, and tells you how many more merges it has found, so the number left to merge continues to grow until it runs out of duplicates. As I did not search for duplicates, sometimes there are unconnected individuals that can be found that way. Also I always scan the name list to pick up the occasional duplicate that computers find difficult to pick. So your experience is doing exactly right. [LegacyUG] Merge
What is probably happening is best illustrated by a simple example. Assume you have two small GEDCOMs with 4 generations with 2 kids per generation. Assume, also that legacy can only recognise one possible pair of people to offer as a potential merge. You have 1 of 1 with none to go. You now tell Legacy that these two really are the same person. Legacy merges them. Now it considers their spouses and parents and kids as possible merges, lets say there are 6 new possible merges. Legacy now picks one to offer you and says 2 of 7, 5 to go. If you merge these two people, their family members enter the fun and the numbers will increase again. Eventually, once you have merged enough, the numbers will start to come down. [LegacyUG] Merge
I am tryong to merge two Gedcoms. The longer I work at it the farther apart I seem to get. I am now at 4015 of 4331, 316 apart. It started at 2600 of 2800, only 200 apart. Am I doing something wrong? I know you can't tell. But it all seems very strange. Re: [LegacyUG] Finding by ID number
To expand on this the only fields that you can use to locate people are the three shown at the top of the screen. To have USER ID as the sort and as a field you can use to find people you have to click the Options button on the Index View and change the sort/search to User ID. This will change the sorting order and the search even if User ID is not one of the fields displayed on the screen. Changing the button/field at the top of the screen does NOT change the RIN Column in the body of the screen to User ID column. To display the User Id on screen use the customize columns choice on the menu opened by the Option button.
