I have the 2006 version, if you like you can send me a copy of your file and I
will open it in this version and make a gedcom copy for you which you can then
import into Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Source Writer

2013-02-02 Thread Sentz
I entered a birth certificate through the Source Writer for myself. The
birth certificate is in my own repository. However, the text for the
citation in the right hand window only shows my city and not the state.
I tried to add the state through over ride, but it did not appear that I
could make a change here. I also checked the Repository listing. I had
typed out New York (state). Could this have made a difference?

Also, when I clicked the highlighted book for the Source Writer to check
the citation, it was listed beside Christened rather than Birth. How
can I change this back to Birth? I clicked on edit source and didn't
see how this could be done. Also, Chistened is highlighted in my
detail, which it should not be if this was an actual Christening
listing.

In addition, I'd like to print out individual reports. I found where to
do this, however, when I looked at the print preview it did not include
my birth certificate, only the items that I downloaded to Legacy from
Ancestry via a Gedcom some time ago after I bought Legacy. (it actually
showed a lot regarding my parents.) Show source using print options is
checked on the source citation. Also, in the report menu under the
source tab, print source citations is checked as are some of the items
under this.

Your advice would be appreciated.

Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Two "how do I record" questions

Tony,
I don't know of any way around your first question. Why not create a
residence event for him and use the school admission as the source. For your
second question since the dates are consecutive just enter the date range
and then source that with each of the dated registers.

Hello, all

I don't like having two event sentences for the same event on the same
date because it doesn't read very well. I have gone to some lengths to
provide sentences which allow me to get a lot of info into one event
sentence (which may be several physical sentences).

However, I have hit a problem with a London School admission record
which has the following information:

Date of admission, school name and address, home address of the pupil,
father's name and a few miscellaneous bits of data.

I want both the school address and the home address to appear in the
location list, so I can track everyone who attended the school and
everyone who lived in that place. Obviously, I can't have two locations
in the same event sentence. If I use two sentences and try to run them
together, they appear with the same separation as any two events.

Is there any way round this? Ideally, If I have to use two sentences,
I would like the second one to continue directly on from the first.

Second, and a bit simpler, I think. I have a number of electoral
registers all of which have this person living at the same address. Is
there any way to record all these entries in one sentence? e.g. The
1918, 1919, 1920 and 1921 electoral registers for St. Pancras show that
she lived at "

Any advice would be appreciated

Tony

2013-02-02 Thread R G Strong-genes
If the Surnames are Capitalized you do not have to search and replace them! You
just go to Options>Customize>Data Format tab and under the section “Letter Case
of Surnames” you pick how you want them and click the Apply button and viola
they are all changed and any new entries will now default to this setting.

If you capitalized your surnames, Legacy works better if only the first
letter is capitalized, you will need to search and replace your surnames. You
will find other problems as well.

Hope this helps.

RE: [LegacyUG] FTM vs Legacy

2013-02-02 Thread David Abernathy
Find some that has a copy of FTM that can read this this and have them load it
and then make a GEDCOM for you and also make a copy of the Media folder if a
newer version of FTM is used. I have done this for many users of FTM that have
needed to go to a different program for one reason or another.

I do have Version 8, and the newer versions 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 installed
on a couple of machines.

If you were to send me a copy (off line) of this file, I will try and see if I
can get this conversion done for you.
Use this email address, but use a good subject, as I use a lot of junk
filtering.

Yes, Roland there can be problems, but what is your suggestion for the OP?

Legacy can't read his file. FTM can't read his file without buying a newer
version (no free version). RootsMagic may be able to read the file and export a
GEDCOM.

If you are suggesting - be careful - I absolutely agree. If you are suggesting
don't do it at all, I'm not sure what the alternative is other than manual
entry. Unless the file is small and total re-entry is reasonable (another
poster's great suggestion) , clean-up is probably no worse than manual entry.

But, your warning/concern is well taken.

I just HAVE TO reply to this. Back when I was trying to decide which program to
switch my FTM files to, I tried the paid version of Roots Magic, and converting
between different programs is something you want to keep at an absolute minimum.

Luckily I tried just my wife's small family file first. Roots Magic seemed to
read notes like an OCR program running words together and putting spaces in the
middle of words. It was a nightmare correcting all those notes after I got them
into Legacy. I still find some more now and then. (I did NOT have that
problem when I transferred my families directly from FTM into Legacy, so I know
it had to be Roots Magic.)

A bonus is that you get to test drive both Roots Magic and Legacy (sorry, I

RE: [LegacyUG] FTM vs Legacy

2013-02-02 Thread Roland Rhoades

Another possibility. Download free version of Roots Magic. It says it can
import a Family Tree Maker 2006 or earlier file. If the free version of Roots
Magic lets you export a GEDCOM, you've got it!

A bonus is that you get to test drive both Roots Magic and Legacy (sorry, I
know this is a Legacy list, but since I'm suggesting Roots magic as a solution,
thought I'd be remiss if I didn't point this out). By the way, I have both
RootsMagic and Legacy, and Legacy is by far my preferred program and the one I
use as my main database.

(This suggestion is untested, I don't have an old FTM file so I can't test)

Most of them are for things like calculating relationships, saving
clipboards and such actions. Ones with your family file name and an
extension are related to your file and may contain links to records

Re: [LegacyUG] FTM vs Legacy

2013-02-02 Thread Ila Johnson
If the database is not real large, you may be better off just starting over
again. If you import your old database you will spend almost as much time
cleaning it up as you would starting over. And by starting over, as you enter
each family, you can go look for sources for them and create those sources in
Legacy either as a Basic source or with the Source writer. There is a lot more
available records today online. You will also be able to create the events for
your families as you go, mark their relationships, etc.

When you GEDCOM and import, if you created custom events or facts, they may end
up in your locations, spaces can be created in your notes and sources, and your
locations may not all be correct. If you had research notes as well as general
notes, they can all end up in one place. If you capitalized your surnames,
Legacy works better if only the first letter is capitalized, you will need to
search and replace your surnames. You will find other problems as well.

If your database is large, then you have no choice but if it is only a few
hundred, I personally would start over again. It took me over three months to
clean my database up. I had a large database and so could not just start over.

Hope this helps.

Re: [LegacyUG] Comparing two .fdbs for changes

2013-02-02 Thread Ron Taylor
Using Date Modified will work if changes were only made in the Legacy program
but does not pick up changes from LegacyFS or other external programs because
they do not set it. It can also be dependent on each computer's date being
correct at the time the Date Modified field was stamped.

The "Compare Two Files for Duplicates" could also be used which will find the
records that are the same in both files...tag those records in both
files...then look at each file for the untagged records which will be the
differences.

A third alternate (more detailed) method for finding differences between 2
files is to use the merge process.
1) backup both files
2) combine both files into one database (import Legacy file) and renumber the
RINs and MRINs in the second file so they are higher than the RINs and MRINs in
the first file. This will allow easy identification of records from each file
based on the range of the RINs and MRINs
3) execute an Intellishare Merge (assuming that both files have a common
origin) and/or a Find Duplicates Merge. Allow Automerge.
4) all duplicate records in the two files will automatically merge with the
lower RIN remaining and the higher RIN deleted
5) records with differences will be presented for review
6) after the merge is complete, new records in the second file will still have
the higher RIN or MRIN
7) to find the new records in the first file, reverse the load order in step 2

If you really want to continue maintaining two files then return to the
separate files. If the intention was to combine the files and eliminate the
frustration of having the same data in two places, the merged file will be the
way to go.

And alternatively she could use any one of a number of free HTML Editing
programs most of which as WYSIWYG so no real knowledge of HTML is needed.

Susan,

This cannot be done from within Legacy as that page is created using a preset
template. However you could use cut and paste to rearrange the page, very
little knowledge of html would be required - just where to cut. I suggest that
you ask on WUL - http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/ which was set up to
advise on Legacy webpages.
