Re: [LegacyUG] old files

2013-02-03 Thread JLB
It sounds like you know what you're doing and want to do.

I have, at times, created extra fdb's for temporary use. And then later
deleted them along with all the 'little' files that accompanied them. I
don't see anything wrong with that.

Re: [LegacyUG] old files

2013-02-03 Thread Pat Hickin
Well, I didn't mean to be so mysterious. The problem is that I tend to
save *every*thing on my computer (like backups from 2007). So now I am
trying to clean up my computer. Getting rid of old .fdb backups -- keeping
one a year for the early years and one a month for the last year, one a
quarter for the in-between years. My feeling is that I'll never need to
use *any of them* and, contrary to advice, I'm getting rid of all the old
little files that Legacy generated since I never expect to need even the
.fdbs.

To me this makes perfect sense.

(Incidentally, I back up all my files to an online service.)

The "little files" I am talking about are the little files that go into the
same folder as the major .fdb. (I am not talking about reports and the
settings for reports. I keep those in a separate folder.)

I add the word "PRIME" to the .fdb(s) in current use so that I won't
accidentally enter new info into an older .fdb..

I have two .PRIME fdbs -- one for my paternal side (PRICKETT); one for the
maternal side (LAYMAN). (There are virtually no intermarriages between the
two lines and they lived in different parts of the country/state so keeping
them separate works quite well for me.)

I keep the P-SIDE .fdbs in a separate folder in C:\Legacy\Data\P-SIDE
prime. It is this folder that has a bunch of little files (which I am
keeping because they are current). The extensions are CAL, CBH, FG, FS,
FSD, NC, NC1, NCD, RC3, RGD, and TC. (I have no idea what they are for.
As Brian suggested, I looked for them in Legacy Help under "Extensions,"
but virtually none of them were listed.)

I want to emphasize that I am *not* getting rid of these current files,
just old ones.

Incidentally, I keep settings for reports in a separate folder:
C:\Legacy\Settings for Reports etc.

Now if you've bothered to wade thru this explanation, you know more than
you need or want to know!!

Re: [LegacyUG] old files

2013-02-03 Thread Ron Ferguson
Pat,

This question relates to the principles of computing and not just Legacy.

Whenever you enter data you put it into a file, and it will remain there until
you remove it, or delete the file. Your original question related to deleting
old files, and it follows that if you delete the file it is removed from your
PC. As there is then no record left there is no way that the PC can ever
restore it, only the user can do that by physically recreating the file and
putting all the data back.

Only folders and files which one is absolutely certain will never be required
again should ever be deleted.

Well, they will but you'll lose the settings they refer to and you'll
have to set your settings all over again at which time those files will
be regenerated depending what each one is for. Is there some reason
you've become fixated on this question that we can answer more directly?

Re: [LegacyUG] Two "how do I record" questions

2013-02-03 Thread Lavern Hall
Hi Tony,

I am responding to your second question. I have several relatives who
resided at the same residence from the time they purchased their home until
their death. What I have done is to use the Master Source and insert a date
range. I've just done one this morning:

Event: Residence

Date: 1993-1988

The event sentence reads:
He had a residence from 1993-1998 of 0 Street, Cleveland, Cuyahoga
County, Ohio 44131-5947.

In this case my Master Source title is
Ohio: Cleveland - U.S. Phone and Address Directories, 1993-2002 . I have
others that have the same master source and cover one year or maybe 4
years. I don't see the harm in combining the same data into one source with
appropriate source detail.

This serves my purpose, however, if you want the event sentence to read
differently, then you can fill in the other event fields accordingly.

Best,
Lavern Hall
Aurora, Ohio, USA

Yes...use the Modified Date in a search or use a backup copy of the database

Is there a way to see the most recent changes you've made in an .fdb?

Thanks,
Pat

RE: [LegacyUG] Getting User Group emails

2013-02-03 Thread Ronald Bernier
Eric,

You are able to post to this list, thus, you are subscribed. If you are not
receiving list emails (a common problem with the Legacy list(s)) you will need
to send an email to Legacy Support and request that they manually subscribe
you. For some reason known only to the Legacy folks, they either cannot or
will not correct this issue.

What is the 'correct' way to subcribe to this User Group please.

go to help and search for file extensions. That has a list of the

Re: [LegacyUG] old files

2013-02-03 Thread Jenny M Benson
If you have kept the family file to which they belong, yes! But if you
delete the old family file through Legacy I think all the related files
should go too. The little files will all have the same name as the family
file (.fdb) to which they are related.

RE: [LegacyUG] FTM vs Legacy

2013-02-03 Thread Alan Pereira
It looks like all later versions of FTM will open any prior version, so I could
use FTM2009 to import your FTM file and then export it as a gedcom.

I have authorised versions of FTM 2005, 8 & 9. If our version was any of
these, I can convert them for you.
We will need to work offline.

I have a family in an 10 year old Family Tree Maker that I haven't kept up to
date. There is a place to import gedcom files but the export does not give that
choice.

Is there any way to get the information out of this old FTM and import it into
Legacy or do I have to bite the bullet and reenter it all by hand into Legacy?

Thanks
