Discussing Focus Groups off-list with Paula we agreed that the "problem"
is not in actually creating the Focus Group (which is very obvious, I
think, when you look at the FG screen and the Help file is helpful).
However, what had confused me at first and which confused Paula was
explained as follows:

"What I found confusing when I first looked at FGs was the relationship
between the lines showing in the first window [something like "Ancestors
(Direct Line, 999 gen.) for Joe Blow (123)"] and the resultant file if
you saved a Focus Group...

You can only have one Focus Group "active" at a time and if you create
one ... you get that one line in the window and it stays there
regardless of whether you Save the FG and even if you close and re-open
Legacy. Once you have created a FG and have that one line, you can add
to that FG by, for example, going through the create procedure again...
to, for example, add the Direct Ancestors of Joe Blow's wife. Then you
will have 2 lines in that window, the first reading "Ancestors (Direct
Line, 999 gen.) for Joe Blow (123)" and the second reading "Ancestors
(Direct Line, 999 gen.) for Jane Doe (789)".

So in other words, those lines are the contents of the Focus Group, NOT
individual Focus Groups as I had thought at first!"

I hope that helps someone ... and also hope I'm correct about only
having one "active" FG at a time.

Thanks. I think I worked it out. New MRINs got assigned to some of the

[LegacyUG] Register for Webinar Wednesday: Pre-1850 U.S. Research Methodologies

2013-02-11 Thread Geoff Rasmussen
As researchers progress back in time tracing an elusive ancestor, fewer
record sources seem to be available. Some sources known to be useful (such
as census records) may appear to contain less vital data unless evaluated
in different ways. And in some areas totally unique sources may be
overlooked if not pointed out in advance by experienced researchers who
have spent years using those sources. In this free webinar, Karen will
demonstrate how to expand your personal research success into the past.

Join us for the live webinar on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 2pm Eastern
U.S. Register today to reserve your virtual seat. Registration is free but
space is limited to the first 1,000 people to join that day. Before
joining, please visit www.java.com to ensure you have the latest version of
Java which our webinar software requires. When you join, if you receive a
message that the webinar is full, you know we've reached the 1,000 limit,
so we invite you to view the recording which should be published to the
webinar archives within an hour or two of the event's conclusion.

Tag your Search list with an unused tag, say 8 for example.  Create a

Focus Group comprising Direct Line Ancestors and tag that group with,
say tag 9 for example.  Then Search for Individuals with Tag 9 AND Tag 9
set to tagged.

(There might be a simpler way, but I seem to be suffering from brain fog

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate spouses

2013-02-11 Thread Ron Taylor
This is probably a question that Dennis Kowalek should answer but I think the
Ltool you are using has the option to put a / and then the MRIN of the parents
in the UserID field. So 2019/3726 may mean that the individual's MRIN is 2019
and the parent's MRIN is 3726.

You are likely getting duplicate problems because a given MRIN should apply to
2 people. If you are doing that in two separate databases and then combining
those databases...the MRINs in the UserID will definitely be confusing if
utilized for merging.
