Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?
I do two different backup scenarios. I feel more comfortable with what I am doing as I also run 2 major websites and I have countless hours invested in those and all of their projects, databases, pictures, etc The first scenario takes 2 external hard drives. On the first Friday of every month, I ghost copy my external drive to a different external drive. Then on that Saturday morning, I go to the safe deposit box and put it in and remove the one from the previous month. The second scenario is that I have two 32 gig thumb drives. I have all major files backed up to them. If any major changes are made to these file, I immediately back up to these thumb drives as well as well as to my external drive. I carry these thumb drives with me - one in my purse and one on my keychain. On 3/26/2013 6:34 PM, JLB wrote: > I don't understand the point of a safety deposit box, as someone > suggested. Since this conversation has turned to disaster now, how can paper storage be considered 'safe'? Paper burns. Paper rots. Paper turns to mush if you add enough water. Ink fades. RE: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?
Well, it's been an interesting discussion so far. It started out as to how to back up the Legacy family file and then the questions arose as to "where" to back up the files. Seems clear to me that there should be at least 2 different geographic locations where the backups are held: one can be your own house and the second can be your relative's house which could be across town or across the country. Doesn't matter as long as it is not in the same location otherwise if your house burns down, all backups literally go up in flames. I think these generally suffice for what I call short-term storage, defining short-term to mean your own life span. When it comes to long-term storage, meaning something that your grandchildren will be able to access, the format of the media upon which the data is held seems to be of most importance. Note that even the LDS keeps their "master" storage as a physical "hardcopy" of microfilm. The do not rely solely on magnetically read media such as hard drives or DVDs. Maybe they're scared of the effects of EMP from a nuclear detonation or maybe they just know all these short term methods degrade from "bit rot", mostly likely effects of gamma rays and who knows what else. So, are we all storing our data just for "short-term"? Not discounting the chance of any type of global disaster in the next 100 years, doesn't it seem logical that the only SURE method of storage is actually a hardcopy of some type. I would assume this to be most likely a printed set of reports or even a bound manuscript or booklet. Hey, could even mean goatskins after all. Re: [LegacyUG] Backups (was Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?)
I also send my genealogy files by Dropbox on a regular basis to a cousin who lives 5,000 miles from where I am just to increase their odds of survival. I suppose it's possible that something so catastrophic and instantaneous could happen to my entire computer desk and accompanying shelves that I wouldn't have the opportunity to grab a backup drive. I don't want to stretch my creative imagination that far but now that I think of it; perhaps something like the floor caving in. But if the floor goes so do I. So I won't care about the 'restore' options. I generally consider myself out of my house with a backup drive in my pocket as a 'second place'. Other second places could be scattering backup drives around my house so they're not all in the same room. Just in case a flood makes it up to the 3rd floor. OK, seriously -- bad things happen and a lot of times they're not scheduled. So, it's worthwhile thinking about the possibilities and how to cover as many potential scenarios as possible. Safety deposit box won't work for people with mobility issues. - JL Beeken JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://jlog.jgen.ws/ On 3/26/2013 5:06 PM, Paul Gray wrote: > Hi JL Beeken, > > I use the safety deposit box. [LegacyUG] Backups (was Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?)
Hi JL Beeken, I use the safety deposit box. I actually have 2 USB external drives, so I make a backup to one, take it to the bank and put it in the box, at the same returning home with the older drive. I'm lucky, my bank is (literally) a five minute walk, so it's no big deal. I do it faithfully once a month. I also use cloud storage, so I have two offsite backups. Many of these services are free. I would never use them as my only backup, but they are a valuable option. Having backups in a second place is critical. One doesn't like to tempt fate, but suffering some type of flood or fire (maybe even in just one room of a home) could potentially result in total data loss. Then I did it only to send copies to my family every couple of years of a relatively small amount of the files in case they cared about having an update. Nowadays I can zip up a folder and put it in Dropbox. An external hard-drive is preferable in every way I can imagine, not the least of which is that I can back up my files immediately. I don't understand the point of a safety deposit box, as someone suggested. Do you go get the drive out, bring it home, update it and go put it back in the box? If I had that kind of routine on my schedule I'd probably only get it done once a year. I just toss my most up-to-date backup drive in my pocket when I leave the house. Unless the earth swallows my house (plus computer) AND I get run over by a bus on the same day, it works. I use the cloud for transferring files to others but I don't depend on it for backups. Brian, No, I do not back up to DVDs etc.. I did 10 - 12 years ago but stopped as the price HD memory fell, I can't remember exactly when that was, but maybe 8 years ago. I fail to see why, in the circumstances you describe, a DVD would be preferable to an external a HD, neither are dependant on the internet, and I do not have great confidence in a DVD which has been written to many times. I backup to an external hard drive and store it in my safety deposit box. It is important not only to have one or more backups, but at least some of them should be stored offsite. Offsite options include the cloud, a friend's house, safety deposit box, whatever. If not, a fire or flood at your home could wipe out all copies. Paul Gray -Original Message- From: Brian L. Re: [LegacyUG] Color use
You might be able to do it with tags. You can choose colors for tags under Customize/Color. And then you can make a permanent tag for the DNA people. You can also choose which tag numbers show up on the various views (under Advanced Tagging). - JL Beeken JLog - simple computer technology for genealogists http://jlog.jgen.ws/ On 3/26/2013 10:31 AM, Jane Sarles wrote: > Is it possible to set particular names to appear in color on the Legacy > screen? Jane - No, you can't. But what I do, for the same reason - show DNA test lines - is to use one of the 9 tags. Choose a color that suits you! That's what I like about Legacy - it is very flexible! Name colours are set by Gender in the main views. Three colours can be used, Male, Female and unknown. Not selectable by person or by a certain criteria. That is the Legacy Default which I though was the question I was answering. If, however, you are asking where I have my back-ups, then in addition to the default I have copies on my brother-in-law's PC, the cloud and an external HD. Well, that should be changed (and it's easy on the backup screen) or you're in danger of losing them all if your computer crashes. I send my backup files to a folder of their own inside My Documents. Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?
Ideally you direct it to a different physical device (hard drive, memory stick, etc.) than where your active family file is stored, in case of hardware failure. Unless it will be promptly backed up by an automated backup program to the cloud or to another device. -Original Message- From: Jenny M Benson Sent: Tuesday, March 26, 2013 7:00 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Computer crashed - how do I move legacy to new computer?
