Hi – I got a new PC in January, running
Windows 7.  This is my primary place for all things Legacy.

I also have a netbook that I only use when
I travel.  The netbook still uses Windows XP.

If I want to upload my Family File from my
PC to the netbook will there be any problems because the
  operating systems are different?

When I want to do this, I save my PC
database to a flash drive, then upload that to the netbook, so
I have the latest information when I travel.

I also use the netbook to add information
to the database after I’ve done my research.  Then I would
save those changes to the flashdrive and upload the latest
file to my PC on my return.

So I’m worried about problems going in both
  directions.

I also have the Families app for my Kindle
Fire, which is great if all I want to do is see my Family
File, but it’s too hard to enter data on the Fire.

RE: [LegacyUG] Merging Legacy and Family Tree Maker files

2013-05-27 Thread Richard and Evita Piepho
Yes follow what Sherry stated and things will transfere, BUT I still have some
branches of my tree on Family Tree Maker because have not worked on that branch
since transfere many years ago.. I transfere manually because the notes do not
transfere to make good looking reports therefore as I worked on a branch would
move them manually because of the problem with the notes... I like very much
the way Legacy reports look much better than Family Tree Maker. Of those that
I transferred had to rework each file to get the notes to look good in the
reports and that is why I went to the manual entry... Also learned the ones
that didn't have sources and found some errors in the FTM which corrected.
Might I say, each person will do what works best for them. Why don't you try a
branch first rather than the whole, to see how you like it! Even when someone
sends my a tree even if in Legacy always work each one individually to make
sure they have all the I's dotted and the T's crossed and that way do not get
any surprises, but then I am very meticulous, because do share with other
family members and do want to be accurate. You mentioned a number of
individuals but that really doesn't mean much for accuracy is important... I
have over 20,000 on the tree at the time.

RE: [LegacyUG] Android app?

2013-05-27 Thread Paul Gray
Jeff,

Well, to be even more specific the transfer to/from Legacy/Families is not a
simple copy, it also involves a database conversion from/to Legacy format
(Microsoft Access) and Families (SQLite).

Paul Gray

From: Jeff [mailto:malka...@orthohelp.com]

Thanks Paul. That's an important distinction.

"Sync" would indeed be correctly assumed to be more than just copying the newer
file over the older dated one. Simple copying from pc to other device or vice
versa can be done by many ordinary file managers. I for instance use the free
ES File Explorer which can do it via usb, wireless land, ftp, etc.

Thanks for the clarification.

That has not been my experience!

For family reunions I often get large charts printed on 48 inch rolls
that extend over 25 feet in length. After extensive trials we
discovered that the best quality was obtained using JPGs and the
company printing them preferred to work with JPGs.

Both PDF and JPG quality is based on the amount of compression used.
So any discussion about quality must reference the compression.

PDFs will not handle the file sizes required for large charts unless
they are highly compressed and then the quality degrades far below
what is acceptable.

JPG sizes don't seem to be limited. So for printing these charts I
create JPGs with *no* compression. The file size is huge but so is
memory stick capacity these days.

Cheers! -- Dave N.

notes for both marriages. You will have to tell us all the settings on

Nancy,

It is ages since I last run a Line of Multiple Descent Report, so I am
afraid that I cannot help.

However it seems at first sight like a bug and I suggest that you report it
as such giving full details as to how and when it arises, though I would
first check that the citation is properly attached and taking a look at a
standard report (Ancestry, Descendant, Individual etc.) to check that the
source does show up in those.

How did you change the Surname? Using Search & Replace is not the right
way to do it - you need to go into the Master Surname List and change
the spelling there.

Re: [LegacyUG] Handling large charts

2013-05-27 Thread Virginia Blakelock
Ron -

JPG is extremely poor quality for chart output and not recommended.
Photos and text will be grainy - particularly noticeable in a large
chart.  The genealogy software native chart output is best quality;
second is PDF to a virtual printer or to a plotter. If Dave has the
plotter driver, he can format his chart for that printer and then
'print' the chart to that printer (first making it his default
printer) and take the resultant file to the friend for printing.

There are detailed instructions 'To print to a plotter' in the second
message in this FTM chart thread:
