This would be a great feature for Rev 8.

Even if MSACCESS can't do it.
Summit it to a log before you submit to the Database with a time stamp

Guy,

What is the file format of the stuff you are pasting. Remember that notes
basically only accept text (.txt) format and not .PDF, .DOC etc.

Margaret,
No, the items open ok in Word or Word pad, and when I copy and paste them into
Legacy Notes they appear ok, but I save it and then go into it later, it is
just all of these figures and letters. It used to work ok once, but not any
more. The computer is only 18 months old and quite powerful and no other
problems. To overcome the problem I have been entering these notes into the
"pictures" and it works ok, but would like to put them where they should go.
The notes that I entered before the last few months, are still quite ok.
Thanks for helping,
Guy.

Hi Jacob

I attach a group photo (jpg) 1st as a normal picture, then I attach the
same picture as a file. When I click on the file attached picture it opens
in Google's Picasa because that is my default program for jpg, (Picasa is
free.) Picasa allows me to identify and tag faces so that when I hover the
mouse over a face it identifies the individual.

RE: [LegacyUG] How to deal with group photos within Legacy

2013-07-19 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
There are several ways to accomplish this:

1. Within the image “editing” of Legacy, is the “Description” of the
image. In there you can add the names from the back of the photo. When printing
out reports that include images, you must then put a checkmark by the “Include
Description” option for Pictures. The downside of this is that if the list of
names is large, then the Caption and Description under the picture when printed
in a report would tend to look much larger than the actual picture.

2. You could also just create a text note for the main person that the
image is attached to… but remember that the note and the image have no direct
link to each other. It’s just a means for you to enter and keep the names
somewhat handy and informative.

3. If you’re feeling really energetic, use a photo editing program to
crop and/or resize the image and create a small white border at the bottom of
the photo. In that white border, enter the names and other info. When saved,
all that text becomes part of the actual image. The downside of this is that
when the picture is printed in a report, such text at the bottom of the image
is probably too small to read in the report (unless you create a custom size
large picture for the report).

4. My favorite method is to add the names and info to the metadata of a
JPEG image (not a TIFF). When you attach that image within Legacy, it will ask
if you want to include such info which then gets automatically input as the
Description for that image. The upside of this method is that such metadata is
part of the image and not really part of Legacy so that whenever you re-use
that same JPEG image over again in Legacy for whatever reason, that same
metadata has not been lost and once again gets re-imported into Legacy
automatically.

Others may have more suggestions.

Are you planning just to add the picture to the gallery for the marriage
(or to the galleries of each of the people pictured) or are you
intending to cite it as a Source.

If the latter, there is a SourceWriter template to use. I would scan
both the front and back of the photo and record what is written on the
back in the Text field of the Source Details. (I have one Master Source
for all the photos supplied by any one person.)

If you are adding the photo to a picture gallery there are fields for
both caption and description so you can record where the picture was
taken, who gave it to you and what is written on it.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to deal with group photos within Legacy

2013-07-19 Thread Ron Ferguson
Jacob,

I have not yet found what I consider to be a satisfactory way of doing this
from within Legacy, so I have no advice!

However, I see that Geoff has announced that V8 will have an option of
creating Shared Events, and I wonder if it may be possible that somehow the
individuals who attended the wedding can be linked and the photo attached. I
guess some lateral thinking may be needed if one wished to specifically link a
name to an individual in a group photo, but I doubt if this is impossible.

I will be receiving a marriage group photo with the participants names on the

within Legacy?

Thanks in advance,

Re: [LegacyUG] To Do list for a certain cemetery

2013-07-19 Thread Jay 1FamilyTree
Gary,

I would just add an event called tombstone to each person
Put the cemetery name in the location field
Put Missing in the description field

Then just do a search for that event name and location and create a printed
report.
(Remember to add the spouses name as one of the items in your report so
that you can see that when you print your list because cemetery stones
rarely have maiden names. )

After you have taken the photos, you can attach the pic to that event and
remove the Missing text from the description field and
you have saved keystrokes for both adding the photo and removing the 'to-do"

But I am sure you will get several suggestions, one hopefully will work
best for you.

There is no log of the type you want. Legacy does keep a modified date for each
individual and marriage so you can search for who was modified on or after a
particular date or the individuals who have a marriage which was modified but
there is no tracking of individual data changes so you will not know what data
changed for the people found.

Click on Options on the menu and select Customize. Next click on the Locations

RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Reports -- Spouses additional marriages

2013-07-19 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Jean,

If you have entered the three children of Wyllo with her first husband, then if
you want them to show up in the descendant report as step children of Guy (and
the focus of the descendant report is Guy), you will need to add them as
step-children of Guy under Guy and Wyllo. After doing this, the entry for each
of Guy’s step children will read similar to the examples below. Notice the last
words.

…. This is with child STATUS ticked on ‘include under Report Options’

Ethel Smith4 was born on 28 Jan 1923, died on 15 Apr 1979

in Texas at age 55, and was buried in Kilgore (Kilgore City

Cemetery), Gregg County, Texas. (Biological Mother - Step

Dad)

…. This is with child-parent RELATIONSHIP ticked on ‘include under Report
Options’

Ethel Smith4 was born on 28 Jan 1923, died on 15 Apr 1979

in Texas at age 55, and was buried in Kilgore (Kilgore City

Cemetery), Gregg County, Texas. (Relationship to

Father: Step, Relationship to Mother: Biological)

To add the children to Guy as his step-children, go to Guy and Wyllo in the
Family View, right click on Guy and choose to add a daughter or son.

when the ADD screen comes up, you will need to click on the ‘Link to an
existing person’

when the Name list comes up, locate the first child of Wyllo and her first
husband, click on the child’s name and a screen will pop up, ‘This child is
already a child of another family, add this child to this family also?’ Click
OK and the child will also show up under Guy and Wyllo.

Now you will need to right click on the child’s name and click on ‘children’s
settings’. At the bottom of this screen, you will notice three choices:

Child Status

Relationship to Father

Relationship to Mother

Click on the down arrow by each selection and make your selections by
highlighting the selection and clicking on Select. I can’t remember all of
default entries but if none fit your situation, you can also create your own by
clicking on ADD in the right hand side of this screen.

Once you work through this a few times, it will become second nature to do this
when working with blended families and you wish for the adopted or step
children to be included where possible.

If all I’ve done is manage to confuse, then please come back and ask again.
There are many very knowledgeable Legacy Users on this forum who will be happy
to help.

Hi all. I'm new to the list and have run into a snag regarding my Legacy
Reports. When I print a Descendants Report, and I have a relative whose spouse
was previously married, or married later, that information does not appear in
the report.

For instance: Guy married Wyllo (maiden name unknown). She was previously
married to Smith and had three children who became Guy's stepchildren.
None of Wyllo's previous marriage information or children appear in the
narrative, even though all that information has been entered under the
"Additional Spouse" information.

Is there a way to correct this (without creating duplicative information as an
entry under "life events")?

Thanks all,

Jean

RE: [LegacyUG] To Do list for a certain cemetery

2013-07-19 Thread Cathy-0
Gary,

I would have a To Do item for each individual for whom I want to obtain a photo
of the gravestone and in the Repository tab of each To Do item, I would select
the cemetery's name and address.

Then I could publish a To-Do Report for a specific Repository and select the
cemetery as the repository. When going to the cemetery, you would then have a
report of everyone you wanted to search for in that cemetery.

Are we to understand that you are doing *exactly* the same thing on your
laptop (which works) as on your pc (which doesn't)? In other words, are
you copying the same text from the same place and pasting it into the
same field in Legacy?

If the answer is "yes", it suggests there is a problem with the Legacy
database on your pc, so I would suggest that firstly you backup your
database and then run File Maintenance>Check/Repair from the File menu.

If the answer is "no", please tell us what you are doing differently.
Please also tell us what you are copying and where you are copying it from.

Re: [LegacyUG] Please help

2013-07-19 Thread Jay 1FamilyTree
Guy,

Sounds like the cut and paste process is including all the hidden
formatting codes from Word or Wordpad.

Try to paste the text into the "Notepad" program first. That should remove
any formatting codes. Then copy the text from the notepad to Legacy and see
if that solves your problem.

Unfortunately, I am not experienced enough to know how to fix the process
so that you wouldn't need that extra step.

letters and numbers that make no sense. It used to work ok but not any more,
yet it still works ok on our laptop. Both computers are using Windows 7. Can
someone please help me and tell me what I am doing wrong. Please make your
answer simple as I am an old man.
  Guy

[LegacyUG] Legacy Site Keeps Closing

2013-07-19 Thread Kay Rains
I am having difficulty keeping the site open. An error message is coming up
"Run-time error '76': Path not found". When I hit OK the Legacy site closes.
It has happened when entering sources and just now when I went to enter some
cremation information.

Regards,
Kay

Re: [LegacyUG] Please help

2013-07-19 Thread suguy4n

Margaret,
No, the items open ok in Word or Word pad, and when I copy and paste them into
Legacy Notes they appear ok, but I save it and then go into it later, it is
just all of these figures and letters. It used to work ok once, but not any
more. The computer is only 18 months old and quite powerful and no other
problems. To overcome the problem I have been entering these notes into the
"pictures" and it works ok, but would like to put them where they should go.
The notes that I entered before the last few months, are still quite ok.
Thanks for helping,
Guy.

Guy,
What does it look garbled when you paste it into say, WordPad or a *text*
editor?
:)
