[LegacyUG] Merge ALL into one very confused

2013-08-14 Thread elizabeth
Hi group,

I would like to merge ALL my separate Legacy family files into one big file
(they are all the same family)I am finding it easier to work with it
that way, for me.

I read back through the archives of this group to learn all I could about
doing this, but I'm having problems.

I created a 'new' family file to begin with. I then imported the most
recent backup of the main family file I had been working with the most, to
use as the 'base'.

But a couple of things are happening that I don't understand

1) When I tried to import a family file that I had kept separately for one
particular group of the family, it 'doubled' the information and put the
people in twice. It showed the wife as having 2 husbands and 2 sets of
children and the husband having one set of stepchildren and 1 set of
children even though both sets are all the same people. What did I do
wrong? I used the Intellishare feature.

2) 'Some' of the people who were imported from a different family file were
marked with a Tag even though I had not tagged them. How did that happen?

3) I want to make absolutely sure that I get all the notes, research, etc.
into this new family file but there are so many backup files on my
computer that I can't figure out which ones to import. Do I have to import
every one of them and compare them in order to make sure I have everything?
That would take a long time to do!

Even though most of the family files I want to merge into this new one are
all the same people, I am finding that the files contain lots of different
information. I now think that many times when I opened Legacy to add info,
I was actually opening different files...not the same one all the time,
because I wasn't always using the same computer. I had Legacy on so may
different computers over the years as well as copies on flash drives that I
am 'swimming in' lots of different copies!! So I am finding info in old
files that isn't in the most recent backup.

4) After I import a family file into this new family file I just created,
is it safe to delete it so I ca get rid of most of the ones on my computer
and sort of 'start over'?

How do I get all this merged---from all my multitude of backups on various
computers and flash drives--- into one family file???

Thanks!
Elizabeth

RE: [LegacyUG] How much information is too much

2013-08-14 Thread David Abernathy
Most people understand that anything before the mid 1800’s may not have a
source to the data.

I would enter the data, it just may lead to other information and in my case
has.

My starting point was my Great Great Great Grandfather born in Ireland abt
1735-48. Then his 2 or more wife’s produced 17 children that we know of. Yes,
we have land records from SC and he is also mentioned in several books in
Indiana. We have no birth records of any of these children, but the next
generations do appear in a few Bibles.

Re: [LegacyUG] How much information is too much

2013-08-14 Thread Kathy Thompson
I don't see why not.
As the daughter of a farmer, I would very much like to know what sort of
crops or animals many of my farming ancestors had on their 130 acres (or
whatever size is mentioned for veracious people in various census records)
I also know that although my family don't appear interested for the most
part, things like this add detail to the story and will get some of them
interested, prompting them to ask questions, leading me to look for new
data.
I saw yes, take some time to find out out what the families farmed, I know
I would if I had access to those sources.

RE: [LegacyUG] Census event question

2013-08-14 Thread CE WOOD
You can get coordinates for any specific address from Google maps. Each one
must be entered individually into Legacy, there is not a "plug-in" that will do
it, in case that is what you meant by mentioning "plug-in." When the address
comes up on the Google map, it is identified by a pointer with a letter inside.
Right click on the pointer, which brings up a list of options. Click on "What's
here?" The coordinates will replace the address in the Google maps search space
above the map. The first number is the latitude, the second is longitude.

They are decimal, and must be converted for Legacy.

Go to the Master Location List and click on Edit once you highlight the
address. In the lower left hand corner of the Add/Edit Location page, there is
a box, "Latitude and Longitude (optional)."

The upper right corner of that box has a calculator. Click on the calculator to
bring up the Distance and Bearing Calculator page.

In the middle of the Distance and Bearing Calculator page, there is a box under
Decimal. Enter the first coordinate (latitude) there, click convert. The
Deg/Min/Sec box will now show the latitude in the correct format for Legacy.
Click Lat 1, and the converted coordinate will appear in the upper left box
under Latitude.

Repeat for the second decimal number (longitude) from the Google page, clicking
Long 1 when the converted number appears in the Deg/Min/Sec box.

The numbers that are now showing in the Latitude and Longitude boxes at the top
left of the Distance and Bearing Calculator are now in the correct format. Do
not close the Distance and Bearing Calculator page until you click the button
under the Close button, the one which says "Return 1st." Doing so will attach
your newly calculated coordinates to the address.

Now you can close the page, and will again be on the Add/Edit Location page,
where you newly found and correctly calculated coordinates appear. You can
know click the box next to Verified, since you have verified the location.

It's actually much simpler than it sounds, but I like to be thorough.

There's nothing in the Interview>Transcripts>Privately held template
which makes it unsuitable for your purpose.

(The "Recorded date field" in the Source Details refers to the date you
attach the Source to the Event or Fact, not to a recording of the
interview.)

With SourceWriter it is perfectly ok not to enter something in a field
if it doesn't seem appropriate and also often ok to put something in a
field which doesn't exactly match the field name.

The Source Clipboard copies the whole Citation - Master Source and
Detail. Even if the Detail you want for Person B isn't exactly what you
entered for Person A it is often quicker to copy Person A's Citation to
the Source Clipboard, paste it to an Event/Fact for Person B and just
change the bits that differ.

[LegacyUG] Source Questions

2013-08-14 Thread pamela wile

Hello folks,

I am a new Legacy User and can use some guidance in setting
up a particular source.

I visited a cousin on the weekend and she told me her father’s
first and given name. At this point, the
source for that would be the conversation that I had with her. I’ve looked at
the categories in SourceWriter
and didn’t see anything that exactly captured this source as I did not record
the conversation and it’s not a transcription (except if I wrote it down and
then I guess it would be a transcription of my own notes).

Can anyone make suggestions on how to handle this?

Also, is the Source Clipboard only available at the time the
Source Detail is entered? For example,
if I have an obituary and I’m entering all of the names, places etc and I don’t
finish but continue on the next session, am I able to go back to one of the
previous names/details and copy the source detail and paste into a new person
or event. Or can I only copy the master
source and have to enter the detail again?

Regards,

Pam

Re: [LegacyUG] Married wrong brother

2013-08-14 Thread Ron Taylor
Very important...don't ever rename an individual to be some other person like
you described to fix brothers.  All the events, sources, pictures, etc. will
still be connected to the individual record but even more critical is the
intellishare value which does not show on screen but uniquely identifies the
individual record and is used to collaborate with others who may have a copy of
your file.

To fix the wrong marriage as you mentioned, do not remove the marriage link
because that does delete the marriage record.  If you just right-click on the
wife that is wrong and "unlink from husband" then the marriage record will
remain along with any children that were connected to it.  Then just add the
correct wife to the marriage.  Similar for wrong husband.

I've just done a silly thing.  I added a wife and, therefore, a marriage
to the wrong brother.  I added a marriage registration event and then
realised what I had done.

If I unlink the husband from the wife, the marriage disappears and I
have to re-enter everything.

Is there an easy way to say "Use this man as the husband, rather than
that one"?

I thought about renaming the brothers, but then I'd have to change all
their details, which is more work than redoing the marriage.

Any advice would be appreciated.
