RE: [LegacyUG] Copying names from Legacy Docs folder
The COPY AS PATH command was added to Windows way back under Windows Vista. What's laughable is all the people who think they had to download and install some other program to do something that was already there as part of Windows. It can even be added into Windows XP if desired. I'm afraid that Sherry will be breaking in soon and say we should end this thread because we're talking Windows functionality here and not specifically Legacy. Before that happens, let me add that if you are still unsure about how the COPY AS PATH function works, here is a good web site that explains it: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/123153-copy-path-file-folder.html Brian in CA -Original Message- From: Ward Walker [mailto:wnkwal...@rogers.com] Sent: Sunday, September 22, 2013 11:52 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Copying names from Legacy Docs folder Gene, it seems to do what she requested (...copy the list of docs contained in that folder by going to Editselect all...). There are a number of ways to do this. I have used both Dropbox and Google Drive, storing all my data files and multimedia in one or the other. The two problems I have encountered is making sure the files are synced to the cloud before I turn off the system, and the amount of space available. A basic free Dropbox account is only 2gb which is not large enough for all my files. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Standard Edition
This is how I would do it … Go to the Legacy website and download the installation file to each computer, then run it to install. If this isn’t practical, download the file to one computer, copy the install file to a CD or flash drive, then go to each computer and install it from the downloaded file. I’m not certain what you mean by having the information identical on each computer. Are you referring to the program or to genealogical data? If the data, copy the same data file to each of the installed Legacy programs by placing it in the Data folder inside the Legacy folder and then open Legacy, go to fileopen family file, highlight your data file and click open. If data is yet to be entered, if it were me, I’d enter the data on the master computer, then copy the data file to the other computers on a regular basis to maintain consistency. Maintain the same file name and just add a new date to the end of the data file name each time you update the secondary computers so you know what file is always in use and can see they are consistent among all the computers. I ‘think’ Legacy v7.5 defaults to the root of C: so you would look for the program on the root of the local hard drive, unless you elect to install it under C: program files (x86) If you have more questions, just ask. There are lots of knowledgeable people here willing to offer suggestions. Meg You could use a file sharing app – for example Dropbox or Sugar Synch- the first is more popular. The only caveat is that you can’t use/update the Legacy file simultaneously – for example, assume you have Legacy and Dropbox installed on your 2 computers and laptop; you could open Legacy on one system, update records, then close Legacy– when the file is closed Dropbox copies the updated file to the other two systems. You could then go to either of the other systems and open Legacy which will have the latest copy of the data. Another way is to keep the data on a movable disk – such as a memory stick (Flash Drive). I think what I need is a spot to check that says print other spouses of spouse. What I want to include is technically not a descendant of the individual I've chosen to make the report for, but the second spouse of the wife who bore this individual's children. This individual died as a young adult and the wife remarried. This second husband to her was, in reality, the only father these children knew, therefore he plays an important part in the family. Re: FW: [LegacyUG] print other spouse also in Descendants book
What you want is not possible in Legacy without distorting the biological links. Those children are not biological descendants of the starting person so they cannot be included in a Descendant Report for him/her. You could link those children of the other spouse to the person who is a direct descendant and then they will appear but with your explanation I am not sure which family they should be linked to as children. Once they are linked to the descendant person you can change the parent child relationship (is the descendant a step parent? did they adopt the children?) to clarify why they are children. [LegacyUG] Census Events-Marriage or Head of Houdehold
Hello, Shirley I'm not sure of any pros and cons. I think it is best to go with what suits you best. Personally, I think a census event belongs with the individual since, in many cases, the person of interest may be unmarried and away from home. Maybe a domestic servant or sailor on board ship somewhere. I add a census event to each family member listed in the household, this usually excludes servants, boarders and visitors. If the person in my tree is boarding or visiting someone not in my tree, then they get an event all to themselves. I use the description for age, marital status and occupation, the date for the census date and the place for the residence address. Notes follow on from the description and usually contain other relevant information. A typical sentence might read: On 2 Apr 1911 George appeared on the census at 21 High Street, Writtle, Essex as a 25-year-old unmarried farm labourer who was boarding in the home of Fred Smith, also a farm labourer. I save the event on the event clipboard and usually only have to modify the description (sometimes the notes) for each family member. I don't list everyone in the household by name for each event. For the mother, I do occasionally add the number of children in the notes; particularly when this is the first census after the marriage. This works for me. Your mileage may vary.
