[LegacyUG] Page width in text files

2013-10-16 Thread Gina Heffernan
I create a lot of text files in Legacy 7 and I am having issues with the
width of the files. The old standard was 80 characters but today's higher
resolutions and wider monitors allow wider pages. Does anyone know if it's
possible to change the width of these files so that I don't have to review
each one for orphaned words or source references?

[LegacyUG] Transiting passenger lists.

2013-10-16 Thread Tony Rolfe
I'm seeking advice on how to record information from a passenger manifest.

My distant cousins travelled by ship from Vancouver to Auckland,
stopping at Honolulu. I want to record this information as it is the
only evidence (so far) of the existence of their children.

So, I have a date of departure from Vancouver, the ship name, the date
of arrival in Honolulu and the fact that they were through passengers to
Auckland. The father of the family died in New Zealand some time later
so I'm guessing that they were emigrating at this time (but no hard
evidence).

I have three locations, two dates and would like to put all the
locations in the location list so I can track the family.

At the moment, I'm thinking of using 3 events Departure, Transit and
Arrival, but I think it is going to be fairly ugly doing that.

Any advice on which event(s) to use and which source template to use
would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

Re: [LegacyUG] Transiting passenger lists.

2013-10-16 Thread Kathy Thompson
I use both Departure and Arrival for any travel or immigration/emigration
events for each person that I can identify on the passenger manifest.
As for Source template, which one I use depends on where I found the
information and if I have an associated image or not.

Re: [LegacyUG] Page width in text files

2013-10-16 Thread Gina Heffernan
Thanks, Brian, for trying to answer my question.

The actual answer is: In the Report Window, there is a tiny little input
box right next to the tic box for Text file when you choose which type of
document to print/create. I just noticed it and changed it to 90 and now
I'm very happy again.

When wrapping text in a family group record, there are times that something
like USA or (9) gets wrapped to the next line, it's worse when
(printed) page 2 starts with that tiny bit of info. I just don't care for
such small items being wrapped and, most of the time, adding the extra 10
spaces cures that issue - for me.

Legacy has a wordwrap button on most text entry screens. Use that to
make your lines free flow to the available width of the screen and/or
pages when printed. It removes all single end-of-line markers but leaves
multiple end-of-lines alone so it will preserve paragraph spaces. I am
not sure what you mean by orphaned words or source references. When
free-flowing text you may have a paragraph with a single word on a line
but since the width available on a screen and the pages of a report vary
from report to report and even from screen to screen if you re-size your
screens as often as I do, that is not something you should worry about
since what works on your screen may not work in report output.
