What about an extra Residence event?

[LegacyUG] 1940 US Census

2013-11-22 Thread Tony Rolfe
I've just discovered my first distant cousins on the 1940 US Census.
Included in this information is the fact that they were living in Orange
County Florida on 1st April 1935.

I'd like to have an event of some sort to record this, but I think I
should say that "On 8th April 1940 they said that they were living in
Orange county in 1935", rather than "on 1st April 1935 they were living
in Orange County".

How do other folk record this data? Is there a standard way to do it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks

Tony

Re: [LegacyUG] Splitting File

2013-11-22 Thread Jay 1FamilyTree
Diane,

I had this happen some time ago and ended up unlinking all of the children
of the grandparents, creating the new files (which then created with only
ancestry of each grandparent) and then adding the children back into the
new files.

Or, you might try unlinking the marriage of your parents first and see if
that resolves the inclusion of all.

But most importantly dont forget to uncheck the "include all" when Tagging
the records.

Hope that helps,

Jay

re: [LegacyUG] Splitting File

2013-11-22 Thread Jim Terry/Support
Diane,

Here are two critical things to keep in mind if your entire family file is
getting copied in the Split Screen View:

1. When in an Ancestor Options screen, select only 'Direct Line Ancestors'
and optionally you can check mark the three boxes under Direct Line
Ancestors. Do not select 'Entire Ancestor Line'. This option is exactly
like adding an entire family line and will take everybody connected in any
way to the individual -- up or down or sideways in his or her family tree.

2. When in a Descendant Options screen, select only 'Descendants (includes
all descendants)'. Do not select 'Entire Descendant Line'. This option is
exactly like adding an entire family line and will take everybody connected
in any way to the individual -- up or down or sideways in his or her family
tree.

[LegacyUG] Splitting File

2013-11-22 Thread Diane Szabo
Hello,
Today I tried splitting my family file unsuccessfully, even though I printed
out and followed the steps for "Splitting Family Files in Legacy" by David
Berdan. For some reason, even though I selected the name of my maternal
grandparents, it selects everyone in my entire file. I've tried this now
four times and get the same result each time. I then tried a focus group,
and that didn't work either.

I need it split between both sets of grandparents: Paternal: Pare-Bellrose
in one file and Maternal: Normand-Guertin in the second. Now I don't know
what to do or how to do it. If others have successfully done this, please
advise what your steps were.

Cheryl,

I believe someone else has already mentioned GEDxlate and I wholeheartedly
recommend this program. Export your family file to a GED and import it into
GEDxlate. It has many options which will give you what you want and much more.
It is free and I have been using it productively for several years. It is one
of the essential tools in my genealogy toolbox.

Re: [LegacyUG] If this is find-a-fault week --

2013-11-22 Thread singhals
Yes, that's one reason.

I research in areas and eras where b-m-d records are
non-extant, regular census weren't yet being taken, and
portions of the family were of denominations that failed to
see a need to make useful baptismal, marriage or burial
registers. KNOWING that one particular line had a
"Bathesheba" or three in every generation between 1940 and
1840 gives me a thread to pull in discovering the name of
the wife of Charles (whose siblings do not include a
Bathesheba).

Additionally, it enables me to say "There was only one
her-name-here, but apparently there was confusion about her
middle name." Her descendants find that fascinating.

It also picks up typos of the James ended up Janes and Jane
turned into Jame sort.

It's essentially another research tool I've found useful in
the past, but I really hate the process of getting it out of
the toolkit these days.

The list I used showed:

Ruinson = 725
Junson = 21
Smuth = 2
Jane = 125
Charles = 250
Elizabeth = 250

Re: [LegacyUG] If this is find-a-fault week --

2013-11-22 Thread Ellen
I have wanted to know the number of people by given name if it were easy to
figure out. We have so many Abraham's and Daniel's, etc. and it would be great
to list in our family history book the top 5 or 10 names by century or
something. For those of us doing books on our families, it might be helpful.
I have found that the non-genealogists in the family really like the charts and
graphs of info that we can provide to them whether they are easily produced by
Legacy or not.

God bless,
Ellen

Mike,

Strange, I have Win 7 (64 bit) and although not recommended I have Legacy in
the program files, drive C,
with data, photos etc in a Picture folder on D.

Maybe Legacy 8 will help - when it arrives.

How can I change the search for picture function to look at the D drive and not

There has to be a simple solution – but cant see it!

I am not entirely clear whether you mean every time or just the first time. If
the latter then I would expect that.

Change the paths in Options>Customise>Locations.

Subject: [LegacyUG] windows 8 - auto search for photos

I have just purchased a new ISUS Zenbook SSD laptop, and have installed the
legacy program on the computer.

The computer has a split drive; a ‘C’ drive OS for software and a ‘D’ drive for
data and storage.

The family files etc all went well and the program was stored on the C drive. I
put the photographs on the D drive. All my certs. etc are in jpeg format.

When I tried to let the computer search for the picture files, it will not
automatically search the D drive, where the photos are stored. It looks only at
the C drive on Windows, and will not search the D drive automatically. I have
had to load the pictures by manually searching for them on the D drive.

Is there a way to sort this out?

Mike
