One of the options which will be offered is to make a copy of that file in the new default location and convert it to the Legacy 8 format. Re: [LegacyUG] File extensions
Gary, If you go to the Help file in Legacy and look up File extensions you can find a list of all the files used in Legacy. Don't delete anything with your file name. Those files work with the data in your Family File. They have an older date because you may not have used the applicable feature for awhile (RGD = Research Guidance, CAL = calculated relationships, FG = focus group you've created) In fact, we don't recommend that you delete *anything* in the Legacy folders unless you *know* what it is (saved documents, etc) without direction from Support. [LegacyUG] What's New in Legacy Family Tree 8? Free Webinar by Geoff Rasmussen now online
Learn all about the brand new Legacy Family Tree 8 by viewing the recording of today's webinar, What's New in Legacy 8. After meeting Legacy's developers, Geoff Rasmussen (that's me!) presented an insider's view of Legacy 8's new features. Don't miss the question/answer session either - other new Legacy features were unveiled then (including the new web links). Re: [LegacyUG] Webinar suggestion
There was a webinar on the Families app back on Apr 11, which looks like a free one where an archives membership isn't required. Geoff has done several Watch Geoff Live webinars, which you can find by sorting on Presenters on the Archived Webinars page. At least some of them require a membership. The webinars are at www.FamilyTreeWebinars.com BTW, the Legacy Family Tree - Unlocked book is a compilation of the Watch Geoff Live webinars in print form - updated for v8. Thanks Jenny, that worked very well. The Event Notes did not display, however, by default they are turned off. Therefore, I went to Report Options Include Tab Event Options Other Options and checked Add Event Notes, and VOILA all of the Event Notes appeared. Thanks again. Therefore, I deleted the database in Legacy 8 and have been learning Legacy 8 with the Sample database. I would now like to move my working database from Legacy 7.5 to Legacy 8. My question: What is the best way to convert my Legacy 7.5 database to Legacy 8, without any loss of data, customized event sentences, sources, and event notes? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. I am using the latest version of Legacy 8 Deluxe on a Windows 7 (64 bit) computer. Just make as if to open a family file inn Legacy 8 and navigate to your Legacy 7.5 file (which is probably in C:\Legacy\Data). One of the options which will be offered is to make a copy of that file in the new default location and convert it to the Legacy 8 format. This is the best option as you will lose nothing and will still have your original 7.5 file which you can continue to use in 7.5 if you wish. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Another, possibly better alternative to the Families app is to use Team Viewer on your tablet and have it remote to your actual Legacy database through the internet. No need to move files back and forth and it obviously has all the features of the real Legacy (or any other Windows based program on your main computer). Re: [LegacyUG] Webinar suggestion
Interesting thought. Is TeamViewer like a VNC or a screen share app? (I think another might be go-to-my-pc or something like that??) Will it work through firewalls (hardware router and software)? So, for instance, if I'm at a library with my tablet and have my desktop up and running at home, can I get to it? Of course a disadvantage of using your suggestion - it does mean leaving my desktop up and running all the time. I like to power it down when I'm not using it for 2 reasons: 1) security - if it is down, it is IMPOSSIBLE to hack/attack 2) lightening - Florida has some really nasty lightening storms. I don't even trust my surge protectorS when we get a heavy storm. And, if I am out of state and something hoses up on my desktop, I'd have no way of rebooting it so I could get to Legacy. Where if I had it on the tablet, no worries about what happens to the home PC. But still worth thinking about. For the life of me I cannot understand why people want to interfere with the way programmers, more knowledgeable than us, have structured the download and upgrade process. If they don’t follow the recommendations, on their head be it. I followed exactly what was recommended for the upgrade without any problem, and then went on to discover the new program from there. To my mind individuals who follow their own whims in an upgrade deserve the difficulties they have generated. RE: [LegacyUG] Embedded codes displayed
There is no option to turn these on and off. When they are being displayed in that format, it is a bug. I’ve seen it before on the Notes tab of the Name List, but had not noticed on the Events Tab of the Name List until just now. Is that where you are seeing it? Or are you finding it someplace else? RE: [LegacyUG] No Legacy News?
On the Legacy Home tab, there is an Options button in the upper right corner, click that and then the Options item on the popup menu. On the dialog box, make sure Allow Legacy to Connect to the Internet is selected. But this would only block the news items from coming up by default, they should still come up when you click on the “Retrieve” message. Only thing I can think of is there is something external to Legacy that is blocking that particular function for you, possibly a firewall or antivirus function but it seems strange that the news retrieval would be blocked and nothing else. If you click on the Legacy News header, does the Legacy Family Tree News webpage open? If that also fails it may be a problem with your ISP’s Domain Name Server not recognizing the news.legacyfamilytree.com name (vs www.legacyfamily.com or just legacyfamilytree.com). The pointer changes to the finger when I hover the link. All of the other internet related help works. When I go to Legacy News on the web, there are entries dated during this time. So, am I alone? Re: [LegacyUG] Uninstalling Help
The online Support offers this advice on uninstalling: -- 2. Or, open the Start menu and go to the list of all programs on your computer. Open the Legacy 8.0 folder and click on Uninstall Legacy 8.0. 3. Or, optionally you can browse to C:\Program Files\Legacy8\RemoveLegacy.exe and run the uninstall tool. Source: http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00677/12/Install-Uninstall/How-do-I-uninstall-Legacy-Family-Tree-8.0.html -- On the StartAll programsLegacy 8 listing, there is no folder, only the shortcut to start the program, on my machine. If that's everyone else's experience, this should be changed. But the alternative suggestion, 3.--if you aren't missing the install.log--works well. The Control Panel route sometimes fails, erasing the install.log. If it does, re-install, and follow 3. above. --- Prescott Smith graysc...@gmail.com Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). RE: [LegacyUG] Embedded codes displayed
OK. I see it there, too. I had not had a case where a bolded part of an Event Note showed in the Desc/Place/Notes field on the Individual Information screen. Description and Place usually take up all the space and very little, if any, of the Notes ever show up there. I think there are also places where the info is displayed in just plain text – not formatted and no formatting codes. That would also be a bug.
