RE: [LegacyUG] Mac use

2014-05-09 Thread Pam Gosling
Hello Mary,

I just added Legacy to a Mac Book Air laptop, using VM Fusion to load Windows
on it first. You have to have MS Windows to run Legacy, the Mac is the “host”
system but the Fusion(or Parallels) makes a “virtual” machine where both
operate together, and Legacy works just fine on a Mac once you get it set up.
Others on the list ( or your son?) that are more computer savvy can help you
with loading it, which can be tricky to make sure it’s loaded and saved
correctly. I have always been a Windows user and need Windows for my job, but
now also use the Mac for other things so having both on a laptop works really
well for me, it just depends on what programs you like to use.

You CAN have Legacy on 2 computers, e.g. one home and one laptop, just can’t
use them simultaneously, unless you’d rather not complicate things.. .??!! but
totally optional . . . .

If you son knows computers, he can help you, or I got help with it from a sales
person at the local Apple store if you need more information. The only question
you might want to ask is how much memory storage you need to run Windows, for
me, I needed to do a custom order for a Mac with more memory or RAM ??(unless
it can be upgraded) than the standard stock Macs so that it won’t work too
slowly. But again, ask someone else who knows computers better than I, your
situation might be different.

Hope that helps, Pam

I have used Legacy for years and currently have it on both a desktop and laptop
PC's. My son is planning to give me a new MacBook next month. Am I doomed to
keeping one or both of my PCs in order to use Legacy?I know there is a way
to use it on a Mac but not sure I understand it.

Thanks.

Jim,

After clearing the list, the Update Current List is greyed out.
I noticed that I only get that warning msg when I try to open a chart with
ext.lwc. Charts with *.lwcx open normal.

Chick,

Try this. It might clear the "The genealogy file could not be found. Some
editing features have been disabled" message, but I do not know for sure.
It's worth a try.

1. Open Legacy Charting.
2. Click on New Chart to open the Chart Creation Wizard.
3. Click the Clear List button and then the Update Current List button.
4. Try opening your chart again.

That is true. The charts were made in Legacy 7.5 which I no longer use, and
I did move the charts to a new location. The warning is not a problem,
just a nuisance. Is there any way to get rid of it?
Thank you both for your prompt replies.

Jim,
Thanks for your reply.
Legacy is installed properly in Program Files (x86)
Family File is saved in Default location in Documents folder.
I do not use any cloud application.
I have full administrative permissions.
I did manually move my charts that were made in Legacy 7.5 into its own
charting folder in the same location with the data and media folder.
Everything works fine in spite of the warning msg.

Chick,

I don't recall ever hearing about this problem in Legacy Charting 8 before. I
have a few questions, the answers which might lead to a solution.

. Where is Legacy 8 installed on your computer?
. Where is your family file saved on your computer?
. Do you save your family file in a 'cloud' application like SkyDrive, Goodle
Drive, Dropbox, Sugar Sync, etc.?
. Do you login to your computer with full administrative permissions or with a

[LegacyUG] Charting Warning Message

2014-05-09 Thread Chick Lewis
Every time I open a chart in Legacy8 Charting I get the following warning:

"The genealogy file could not be found
Some editing features have been disabled"

I click on OK and the file opens normally. Why am I getting this warning
and how do I get rid of it?
