[LegacyUG] Independent Cities

2014-07-23 Thread Margaret Gagliardi
Would someone please tell me how I should record Petersburg, Virginia? It
is an independent City, without a County.

Thank you very much.

2014-07-23 Thread William Hoff
Hi,
I use Independent City in place of the county name.
As you are recording Virginia information. How might you handle locations
once Virginia but now West Virginia? I've recorded as West Virginia,
historically incorrect, but needed for current mapping purposes.

2014-07-23 Thread Margaret Gagliardi
Thanks so much for the ideas. I will try them. I always use VA if it is
before West Virginia became a state. Once it became a state I use WV. I
know those counties, so for me it works well. However if you are using GPS
etc. I would put it as WV with (VA) after it. I don't know if that would
confuse the GPS or not, but you might try it.

2014-07-23 Thread William Hoff
I've been using only West Virginia and noting with the location that prior to
June 20, 1863 it was VA. With county edit I then get an error MSG that the
county did not exist. Guess I just have to live with that. Being from WV there
is a lot of this though.

I use IC ... or lie and put it in the county it would be in
if it weren't an IC so others can tell at-a-glance which
part of Va it's in. I mean, Petersburg, Roanoke, and
Winchester are all ICs but knowing that they're not
next-door neighbors can be useful.

Now I think I understand your situation. When you backup a Legacy database, it
produces 2 zip files. One for data and another for media.

You have already converted your Legacy 7 data to version 8. Now unzip the
media to your new locaiton for media and then run the relinker.

Have you searched the archives? There were a lot of threads about "relinking

So far nothing is working on linking up the pictures. I printed a list of
missing, 1188, and I can link them individually. Now that will take a long
time. It finds the pictures on the other flash drive where they were
associated with Legacy 7.5, it is still using that drive as the designation for
where they are. I wanted them to transfer over to the Legacy 8 flash drive.
Media Linker won’t link them up. Am I reduced to doing each one and having the
media stored on the other flash drive. This does not seem logical. I am sure
there has to be a very easy way to do this. Suggestions welcome.

RE: [LegacyUG] Independent Cities

2014-07-23 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I noticed a few weeks/months ago that FamilySearch was referencing the
independent cites for example as “Petersburg, Petersburg City, Virginia, United
States”. Thus, Richmond becomes “Richmond, Richmond City, Virginia, United
States”, etc.
