[LegacyUG] Restoring backup file

2014-10-06 Thread Liz Denis
I've just realized that I have deleted a bunch of notes under one
particularly important ancestor. If I restore an old backup file (in
order to copy the notes to paste to the new file), will I loose the new
updated one? I'm afraid to click the "restore" button in case I get
myself into more trouble. Thx

Re: [LegacyUG] moving from source to event

2014-10-06 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Anne,

Well you found an option in Legacy that I didn't know existed. options
for non-sources. That doesn't happen very often ;-)

It sounds like you'll have to do them one by one though it may be easier
if you used the copy to general notes option in the non-sources options
and did it from there so you weren't constantly going back to the
assigned sources page - but what is easier depends on whether you have
notes for these people. The census and military sources would remain
sources for the name. I don't think a move or copy to the event notes
works unless the source is already attached to that event.

I'd be using Show List for the Master Source and then tagging those that
use it and working through the tagged group.
This can be done most efficiently EITHER by working in a Search list
based on the tag (or the master source) OR by using the Individual Tag
box at the bottom right of the screen, setting this to the right tag
number and using the arrows to scroll from one person to the next.

The events will still need a source.

Perhaps these are in sources because the program you were previously
using didn't have a place for specific events - or perhaps in those days
you just saw a census as a source as some still do - in which case you'd
enter at least a residence event with the census as the source so that
it shows in a person's timeline/chronology.

I enter the census as an event as well as a source as the residence may
be the same for a number of different censuses and also have a number of
other sources. I want to be able to look at the Event list and see very
easily whether I've found someone in every relevant census.

To do this fully is a huge job, especially if you haven't transcribed
the census data or included the actual census reference - but you may at
least in the first instant be happy without that much detail. I put a
transcript in the head of household event notes as well as the Source
Detail Text. I'm in the process of updating some of my census sources as
when I found them I didn't really understand the reference - and
generally the information was coming from a transcript rather than the
image.

Note that copying the source to either event notes or general notes only
takes the parts checked for printing. So if source detail text and
comments aren't checked, they're not copied.

Sorry it could be a long job but tagging helps you to do it in
manageable bits or when you feel like it as you untag each person when
you've processed them.
If you use the tag box at the bottom right to cycle through the people,
you may want to go to Options - Customise 12.5 and turn off the message
telling you that you're at the end (or beginning) of a tag list and need
to go to the beginning (or end).

Re: [LegacyUG] Can anyone replicate this, or what am I doing wrong? Calendar Report

2014-10-06 Thread Jess
You can still obtain a workable calendar from the reports drop down. The
problem only appears to be in the Publication Center one.

The calendar output leaves a lot to be desired though. I really need an output
other than PDF, such as txt, rtf, doc, or even an xml type.

Re: [LegacyUG] Find/Replace Address Data

2014-10-06 Thread Sherry/Support
In the Master Location List, go to Options > Expand/Contract Location Parts.

There's a selection to expand the locations, which will change TX to Texas.

However you must have those locations in the four part format of city/town,
county, state, country, with commas for missing elements otherwise this
feature won't find them all correctly.

You don't need to back up because you can undo by contracting location
parts .

However, Bob gave some good info on the Search Replace feature, including
the backup warning and confirming each change.

RE: [LegacyUG] Find/Replace Address Data

2014-10-06 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Rick,

In the simplest form (read my caution)...

Go to "Search/Search Replace".

In the pop up window...

  Find where: Lists-Location

  Find what: TX

  Replacement Text: Texas

  Anywhere in the field

Replace only found text with replacement test

Caution:

doing as above will work, however it could change every letter combination of
tx to Texas. I prefer to be more specific by...

  Find what: , TX

  Replacement text: , Texas

or: , TX, USA to , Texas, USA

then I'm pretty sure to get the results I want.

You may want to do the same in List-Location Short, although many will leave
the TX in the short version of the location.

TX is fairly safe, as there aren't many words with that combination. If you
were doing OH you could get Ohioio, as the Oh in Ohio has been replaced with
Ohio. As in: replace "IN" with "Indiana" and get " IllIndianaois ". I think
you see the need to think it through before doing the replacement.

Another caution, as with any of these significant operations - do a back up
first.

Bob

I don’t know of any “Find and Replace” for the Master Location list. You’d
probably just have to SORT… and then move the STATE to the top of the list and
then scroll down on your list until you find all the TX locations together.
Then EDIT each one to TEXAS.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting question

2014-10-06 Thread Brian/Support
I do not think the order process sets any default sizes. The only
"default" is that sizes extend in 1 foot increments for the selected
roll width.

Your other questions are aesthetic and only you can say what is too
compressed or too spaced out. If you want to see the full size you can
expand the chart and there is a zoom indicator in the lower right, zoom
until that is at 100% and your monitor should show the boxes and
contents close to the final size.

Yes if your chart is 33 in then 36 in wide paper would be the minimum.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting question

2014-10-06 Thread Jessica Morgan
Yes Brian, I understand all that. I'm at the point where I want to order
the chart, but am not sure about which width is appropriate. I don't want
it too spaced out, nor too compressed. I cannot tell by the screen visual
whether this will be the case. So does the order process default to the
best size for your chart, or some other default and I need to change this?

My box width is 1.5", Generation width .375", Space .25. Showing 4
generations.

At the bottom of the screen it shows Size 280.5" x 33.00" - so I would
assume I would need the 36" minimum? Or am I incorrect?

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting question

2014-10-06 Thread Brian/Support
The charting service uses paper in 3 different widths: 24, 36 and 48
inches and several qualities. This is roll type paper for banners not
single sheets.

The total size of your chart will be a function of the number of people
included in your chart plus your choices of box sizes and spacing
between generations and boxes. As you go through the ordering process
Charting will let you select the best page orientation to match your
chart dimensions.

There are also controls in charting to centre the chart on the page etc.
and to move sections of the chart to minimize the chart size.

Re: [LegacyUG] How best to keep track

2014-10-06 Thread brittongen
Events might work well for me too, but I'd appreciate suggestions on other
Legacy features which might help - or cautions about traps which I could run
into. Basically, I'm using the program for two things. My children aren't much
into genealogy and family history, so I'm building a record for my toddler
grandson (and some interested cousins), where what's in Legacy files or gedcoms
may survive me but my papers and computer files won't. I'm also using Legacy as
a research tool for family history, classic genealogy, and DNA genealogy. I'll
give two examples.

My parents were active in highly classified WWII activities. From my mother, I
learnt that she typed the orders which moved the man who would become Marshal
Tito from Moscow to Yugoslavia (on a Canadian passport), mentioned in a 1970s
book which also noted that the details were then still classified. It was part
of a covert UK/US plot which could/should? have seen the US President
impeached, sacrificed about 10% of all Yugoslavs, but was material to the
failure of Barbarossa, arguably the critical event of WWII. That, and similar,
form interesting family history, and it's propagated, usually destructively
(divorce etc.), to and through descendants - inexplicable without knowledge the
events and understanding of the stresses which warped those involved.

Legacy has been useful as reminder to check again for what has been recently
declassified, and can, of course, carry general and research notes. It has some
ability to display timelines, but some research needs juxtaposition of
unrelated datasets. Sourcing raises questions too. In the above, the source was
my memory of a conversation (dimmed by 35 years). Credibility improves with
description of the circumstances, the book could be cited for that, and perhaps
more declassification will place mother in the right time and war theatre.
Where and how, though, to record explored blind alleys and possible approaches
for someone a generation down the road? Related, how to cite elements of my own
history where I use previously confidential papers and may have the only
remaining copy?

Deep genealogy is either truncated at the limit of continuous paper records,
i.e. classic genealogy, or means must be used to span gaps, laterally and
longitudinally. By DNA, one can know, with very high probability, of collateral
lines. Legacy wasn't developed to work with anything other than parent/child
connected data in a single tree. It's flexible though, so how to exploit that
for other genealogy purposes? It seems to work well to estimate a TMRCA and
then link collaterals by "Placeholders" at about 35 year intervals. There's
essentially no place in Legacy 7.5 to record DNA data, but present major
databases may be unavailable to my grandson (example Ancestry yDNA). Fields for
"Placeholders" could perhaps be repurposed for much or all of that, notably
aiding atDNA application to conventional genealogy search for connections.
Longitudinal study seems helped by the "Placeholder" approach in the time
domain of Heraldry, for both research and record, regarding STR yDNA, with SNP
data newly a factor. For deeper genealogy, my grandson, a Britton, may want to
know if he is Brythonic or got his surname some other way, and how he came to
Britain from Adam in Africa while his mtDNA came here eastwards. "Placeholders"
for that get to be rather long-lived, and time works backwards BCE.

Again, this is not what Legacy was designed for, but Millenium must be aware of
increasing interest in such, so has a choice to limit Legacy to classic
genealogy, modify it in a future version, or to produce, or link with, a
companion. Whatever choice, it may be useful for both Millenium and the
community to experiment with Legacy's current flexibility to illuminate this
area. DNA is not going away, and we certainly need something better to preserve
and communicate with than Gedcoms are now for classic genealogy. If the
Millenium choice is to ignore DNA, then a clear statement to that effect would
keep posts like this off the List, especially if words to that effect were
added to the Legacy User Group Guidelines.

Re: [LegacyUG] moving from source to event

2014-10-06 Thread mi...@juno.com
Hi Cathy, Thanks for replying.

I believe I need to make new specific events on each person and move the census
(and other things) from sources for that person to the new events.

When these were originally input, about 35-40 years ago, there wasn't a
distinction between the source and its event. (These records are all under
"name" rather the "unspecified" in the Assigned Sources, I don't know why.)
The ged.coms, as I transferred from program to program through the years,
finally ended up with this information in sources here in Legacy. My "source"
is just "1850 Census" for example. Then I put the place in the details. I
never recorded where I found the censuses. Each entry is for one person only,
as I haven't yet decided to "share" with each family member listed, I only have
it on the head.
So, I have 4 or 5 census entries and once in a while a military, for pretty
much each person, several thousand, and they all show in footnotes on reports,
instead of in the body of the report where I do want the whole record.

Nothing was transferred to events by the ged.coms. My entries for birth,
death, & marriage certificates, documents, newspaper articles, etc are all in
sources, which is OK, but never in events. I believe I'll have to create
events for at least some of these, to get the info to print elegantly in
reports, but I thought I'd start with the census records as they take up so
much space.

2. I mean I went to master source list >options >options for non-sources >copy
to:events or notes. But I guess I would already need an event set up for it
to copy to. Thus the hand work.

Thanks for the clipboard idea. I've never used the clipboard before, so this
will give me the impetus to figure that tool out. It sounds like it can save me
time, even doing them one by one.

Well, many of my census entries do show a source, that is I once entered "see
census file" because even all those years ago I always took a photocopy of each
census page and have a physical file of copies for each family. Now-a-days my
new copies are jpg's on the computer, so there are the 2 "sources", if that
makes any difference.

Thank you for your thoughts on my dilemma.
Anne
