Re: [LegacyUG] Customing a Global Event

2014-11-29 Thread Brian/Support
You cannot customize the individual input form. You can create a custom
event appropriate to the Jewish faith and add that event as an event for
the person and just not enter anything for the Chr event. If all the
families in the file are also Jewish you can customize the Family View
to use that event in lieu of the Chr event on the family view. If there
is a mix of religions in the file you will have to decide which to show
on the family view because the options you choose there apply to
everyone in the file.

Re: [LegacyUG] Customing a Global Event

2014-11-29 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Nancy,

In the Individual's Information Page, that set of fields between birth
and death can be altered to read either Chr/Christening or Bap/Baptism.
Those are the only choices there, and you can change them at option 3.10
(Options > Customise).

When you're looking at the Family View, you can see five fields of data
for the central couple. These can be customised to show whatever you
want, so here you could replace the default christening field with
another data field if that suited you better.

Say you use the event called BarMitzvah (as an example) and want that to
show in Family View...

1. Click on the LABELS to the left of the actual data.

2. Pick which field you want to change, and click on the three dots
button beside it.

3. A list of "Field Names to Display" pops up - scroll up or down as
necessary to click on/select the field you want, in this case we're
going for "Event..."; click the Select button when you've made your choice.

3a. Next, because you selected "Event...", you need to further define
which event you're going to display - scroll down (if necessary) until
you see the one called "BarMitzvah" and click on it; click on the Select
button when you've done that.

4. You're nearly there - the Field Name on that line in the Customise
window has now changed to show "Event: BarMitzvah". Take a look at the
"Names to Display" and "Short Name" fields alongside, and check they say
what you want them to say; click in the field and alter it if you want
to do so.

5. Click on the Close button.

6. You're done! :-)

This is also covered in the Help files within Legacy - look up Family
View, Customize for more information.

It might be that there is no existing event that covers what you're
wanting to show. That's okay - you can create your own event that is
structured the way you want it to be. Tell us if you want to know more
about this, or go to the Help in Legacy and look up "Event" - there's a
list of topics under that, and you'll likely find the ones for Add,
Create sentences and Edit helpful.

Hope this helps. :-)

Wendy

Within v7.5, all you need to do is to right-click on the name of the FIELD that
you want to change, i.e. CHR. I suspect this works the same way on v8 as well.

If you look in the HELP file under Customize Family View Information you get
more info.

The first thing is to make sure it actually installed. It installs into a
hidden
folder so you have to have hidden folders and files turned on in Windows to see
it.

It is in C:\Program Data\Legacy Family Tree\GeoDB (Program DATA not Files.
This is a

Hello Michele

Thank you for helping.

I downloaded the Geo Database and it appeared to install ok but nothing is
happening
when I click to search.
When I first installed it I got a message from Vista to say it may have a
compatibility
issue and to install using windows compatibility fixes, so I did that - but

not work.
I then reinstalled it without the compatibility fixes but still - no work.

The geo database is working in legacy 7.5 on the same computer.

Any further suggestions?

Barton,
The update is not automatic. When you see that an update has been released you
can download it and install it from within Legacy itself if you are using the
Deluxe version. You do this on the Legacy Home tab. Or, you can update from
our website using this link http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp

When the update is released it will be announced on the LUG list, usually by

Re: [LegacyUG] Family view & Individual is not the same options

2014-11-29 Thread Brian/Support
They have never lined up in the way you seem to think they should.

The Individual Screen is an input form and has to have all the fields
where you can enter data, it is not customizable. The Family screen is a
View of the data which means it is a display of selected data and can be
customized, within limits, to the user's preference. The default fields
for the Family view include the 4 vital events of birth, Chr/Bapt, Death
and Burial and a view of the Death Cause from the Medical Notes. The
data on those lines can be changed by the user as part of the view
customization. The Individual input screen has those four vital events
plus other data fields such as never married and had no children check
box, Events list box and buttons to take you to other inputs.

DNA test result entries are too extensive to display and cannot be added
to the Family view since they consist of multiple elements and values.
There is only room on the Family View for one line and values which can
fit on a single line such as date/place of an event.

Re: [LegacyUG] can't add repository

2014-11-29 Thread BARTON LEWIS
I am not familiar with how updates work.  It doesn't sound like emails
are sent notifying they are released or you get an update automatically
they way you do from Adobe, say.  Are we just supposed to periodically
check using the methods you describe below?
Thanks,
Barton

Subject: [LegacyUG] can't add repository

I am trying to create a source for a will.  I am using the Source Writer
and this is the template I have selected:

Probate records (wills, estates, etc.) > bound volumes > created at
state/province/colony level > basic format, records removed to state
archives

When I get to the Repository field and click on the blue + sign to add
the repository, after I type in Name, Address, City, State/Prov, Postal
Code, and Phone Number, and then click Save, it freezes up on me.  There
is the audible ring tone and then the screen is frozen and I cannot
click on anything to save or cancel.  I have to choose end task on the
task manager to proceed.  Does anyone have any idea why this happens?

Thanks,

Barton

Re: [LegacyUG] Family view & Individual is not the same options

2014-11-29 Thread Syble Glasscock
I asked for help, not judgment of my genealogy research, yes, I have numerous
christening records, but prefer to use it as an Event, not on the screen.
Excuse me for being "different".   Personally I was not even going to use the
Cause of Death for that,   I wanted a quick reference for DNA matches on the
Family Screen, so I was just going to use that because I'm not impressed with
Legacy's DNA record,   I keep all the DNA correspondence/information, in One
Note, but it would be nice to have it oh the Family Screen of each particular
person, obviously it's my database.
I've been using Legacy since version 5 and have upgraded each upgrade, so I do
have a little knowledge about Legacy, and many of us choose to use in a way
that is best for our needs and have no intention of writing a book.    I well
know that you don't input into the "Family View, but into the "Individual
View", but they are SUPPOSE to line up with each other and mine
don'tSyble

 Syble,

Sorry, as I said, you cannot change the input fields on the Individual Screen.

If you don't want Christening, I gather you are not very far back in your
research or are in the lucky position that there is actual birth information
available very early in your areas of research. In my research from early
nineteenth century back I only have christening and burial information.

To repeat. The fields on the individual input screen are fixed.

Birth Date/Place
Age at Death
Death Date/Place
Burial Date/Place
Cause of Death - [Name to Display = DthCau] , Then I close that pop-up
window and the Individual's page that I'd been looking at in Family
View, I open his individual page and now my options to fill in are:
Born
Chr...I don't want this , I want Cause of Death or Display name= DthCau
Died...
Buried
I have the age of death on the Individual screen to the right, which
is where it's been since version 5 if I remember correctly. I have
been able in the past to have the DthCau (Cause of death), so my
question is still what happen to it and how to get it back, obviously
you can't type in from the Family View, so I need that area to be able
to type in on the Individual's page.

    Hi Syble,

You have the choice of what to show on the Family View.
Right click on one of the labels and then customise.
The default is Birth, Chr, Death, Bur and DthCau so if you have
Age, you have modified it at some point.
I usually change the DthCau to one of the Events as I have few
Causes of Death in my database. To change to an Event is a two
step process - first when customising the labels choose Event and
then the specific Event you want to show.
You can choose to save sets of labels so it's easy to change from
one set to another when working on different areas of your database.

If you are wondering where to input the Cause of Death, that's on
the Medical Notes - one of the tabs when you click the Notes icon.

The input options on the Individual screen are fixed. Most other
items are added through the Events/Facts section.

    Hope that helps,

hidden folder so you have to have hidden folders and files turned on in Windows
to see it.

It is in C:\Program Data\Legacy Family Tree\GeoDB (Program DATA not Files.
This is a folder that is normally hidden)

Hello Michele

Thank you for helping.

I downloaded the Geo Database and it appeared to install ok but nothing is
happening when I click to search.
When I first installed it I got a message from Vista to say it may have a
compatibility issue and to install using windows compatibility fixes, so I did
that - but program not work.
I then reinstalled it without the compatibility fixes but still - no work.

The geo database is working in legacy 7.5 on the same computer.

Any further suggestions?

Charles,
That message means that the Geo Location Database did not download completely.
I will
send you a special link you can use via a private message. You should be able
to
download it fine from there.

RE: [LegacyUG] can't add repository

Barton,

There is a known issue related to adding repositories that has already been
fixed by the programmers and the fix will appear in the next update.

Subject: [LegacyUG] can't add repository

I am trying to create a source for a will. I am using the Source Writer and
this is the template I have selected:

Probate records (wills, estates, etc.) > bound volumes > created at
state/province/colony level > basic format, records removed to state archives

When I get to the Repository field and click on the blue + sign to add the
repository, after I type in Name, Address, City, State/Prov, Postal Code, and
Phone Number, and then click Save, it freezes up on me. There is the audible
ring tone and then the screen is frozen and I cannot click on anything to save
or cancel. I have to choose end task on the task manager to proceed. Does
anyone have any idea why this happens?

Thanks,

Barton

Re: [LegacyUG] UserID

2014-11-29 Thread Sherry/Support
Alan,

It's an alpha-numeric field and that's how that type of field sorts.

If you put zeros in front of the numbers so they're all the same
length, they'll sort correctly.

01
015
031
205

Sherry

Re: [LegacyUG] Family view & Individual is not the same options

2014-11-29 Thread Cathy Pinner
Syble,

Sorry, as I said, you cannot change the input fields on the Individual
Screen.

If you don't want Christening, I gather you are not very far back in
your research or are in the lucky position that there is actual birth
information available very early in your areas of research. In my
research from early nineteenth century back I only have christening and
burial information.

To repeat. The fields on the individual input screen are fixed.

Subject: [LegacyUG] DR set

I did find the auction place - that is quite the place. There is a 100 year
old guy who has a warehouse space that is absolutely jammed with junk. He,
somehow, has an auction on Monday evenings at 7:00. He doesn't hold out much
hope in selling it. He would take it for two to three weeks, then I would have
to get it out of there.

I ran another ad on Craigs list, dropping the price to $225 and got a response
within an hour. There is a guy coming from Abbotsford on Sunday afternoon to
look at it.

See you in the AM.

Bob
