You'll have to be a bit more explicit with the substance of your query.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - in Word, etc. ?

2015-03-05 Thread Stu and Priscilla Fanning
Thanks for all of your answers, Charani.
Thank you for letting me know that the document is not online.  I use Chrome
for internet.  In order to go to the document where I had saved it in my
computer, I had to click on an icon that looked like the one for Chrome, so
figured that it was online.

I think I have figured out how to change the line length when using Text file.
I see that it has a box after those words with 80 in it.  I have changed that
number several times...now to 170.  It is far better.   I made the report with
the page in landscape and then copied it and pasted it into Word.  There are
still some things to fix once it is in Word, but at least that can be done.
If there are any easier ways or something else that I should know about how to
do this, please pass that along.                                       Thanks
very much,                                            Priscilla

You can reset the line length yourself.

Everything on your computer and everything you use on your computer
has a default, which are the "factory" settings. You can pretty much
change those to whatever you want, so if the default line length is,
say, 60 characters, you can change that to 80 characters or whatever
you want.

> More than that, though, it seems like the document is online.

If you haven't physically uploaded your document to a website anywhere
using an upload program of sort, it is NOT online.

If you are composing the document on your computer, it's not going
anywhere.

If you are composing it on a blog site (eg Wordpress or similar),
then, yes, it will be online.

What makes you think it is online?

> How do I remove it??

Since it's unlikely to be online you won't need to.

Again you can reset the line length yourself.  Have a look in the
settings.  Look but don't do anything at first!  See what there is, then
change what you want to but remember what you've changed.  Legacy
is one of those lovely programs that allows you to reset to the defaults
if you get in a muddle :)

Bear in mind an HTML/RTF document is at least four times larger than
a plain text document.  You won't see all the coding on your computer
but it's there.

If your document isn't how you'd like, save it as it is, then make a
copy and
have a fiddle around with it to get it to be the way you want.

That only happens if you don't check the "Don't sort

Note that new additions can be kept in date order depending on your

are several surnames other than "UNKNOWN" that appear on the list. I
checked each of the associated individual records and could find nothing

Re: [LegacyUG] Switching fields in an event

2015-03-05 Thread Howard Cady
Kirsty,
Importing data from another program into Legacy and downloading data from
FamilySearch into Legacy will have nearly the same problems. The tool I use to
see what is going on is Dennis Kowallek’s Zipper Software – Ltools Deluxe
version. See web address zippersoftware.com/wp/ltools/what-is-ltools/ for
information. Dennis provided strong support through Legacy ver 7.5 and viewing
Legacy’s tables still works well. Programming changes to Legacy8’s Event
Tables will require learning SQL programming language – not trivial. The work
around for you may be to get a new gedcom file from FTM and edit out, with a
word processing program, all individuals except those with troublesome events.
Then edit the events to have field names that will transfer into Legacy Note
fields, and then use legacy’s merge individuals feature. None of this is worth
the effort unless you have lots of events with problems.
If you only have a small number of troubling events then use Windows split
screen feature and display FTM on one side and Legacy on the other. Get the
problem event displayed with both programs and use Windows clipboard
(ctrl-c/ctrl-v) to put the offending information into Legacy’s Notes, or use
FreeClips to do the same thing. Delete anything in Legacy’s Event Description
field if you plan to access FamilySearch with an individual using this event.

Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] Switching fields in an event

Hi, Howard —

Thanks for taking a stab at answering my question. The issue you faced sounds
quite frustrating, and I’m glad you found a solution.

Unfortunately, my issue has to do solely with Legacy, and not with its
integration with FamilySearch’s tree. I actually had data that came from a
FamilyTreeMaker file that was imported into Legacy — the import is already
completed and there’s been too much work to go back to the importing step. But
that’s how the information ended up in the wrong fields. Once I try to merge
this temporary Legacy tree with my main tree (which I haven’t done yet, since
I’m trying to clean up and standardize things), I will have a problem with this
particular event because the format is so different from my regular Legacy
event.

There are two possible solutions that I can see — one is to create a new event,
and rework all the sentence definitions so that these particular ones use the
description field in a different way. The other solution would be to
standardize the input of the data by switching the information that is in the
Legacy event fields. My preference is for the latter.

If there’s a way to do this from within Legacy, that would be terrific. If I
need to use Access to switch the field information, I’m open to doing that
(although I hope it would be fairly simple to do since I haven’t really used
Access to modify my Legacy database before).

cheers,

Kirsty

[LegacyUG] Probable Bug - Bolding Notes in Event Screen

2015-03-05 Thread Dave Johnson
Someone else may have noticed this bug, but I have seen no email regarding
it.

When documenting a census event, I transcribe the census record in the Notes
Field. I typically start by pasting the "text" tab contents into each
persons in a census record. Then I Then I highlight the person whose Legacy
Record I am working in. The problem is that when I first Bold the name of
the head of household and save the Event, instead of Bolding the first name,
the system puts a /b in front of the name. After the name has been saved
and I pull it up again, I can delete the /b and Bold the name and then it
holds.

An example is below:

Text/Comments tab contains the transcribed Census Record for this household
as follows:

Elenor McGINNIS, head, white, female, born in Mar 1835, age 65, widowed,
bore 6 children - 4 still alive, born in Kentucky, father born in Kentucky,
mother born in Alabama, able to read write and speak English; Elza V
McGINNIS, grandson, white, male, born in July 1856, age 13, single, born in
Missouri, parents born in Kentucky, attended school, able to read write and
speak English.

When I copy the text (above) and paste it into the Census Event Notes field,
for Eleanor McGinnis, I put in one blank line followed by "1) " just as
Geoff explained in his Census Event DVD. Then I delete the semi-colon after
each person's information and replace it with a period. Then I hit enter
and type "2) " for the second person. And so forth. Before saving the
record I Bold the first name, in this example Elenor McGinnis. After saving
the Census Event, when I reopen the census event it looks like this.

1) \bElenor McGINNIS, head, white, female, born in Mar 1835, age 65,
widowed, bore 6 children - 4 still alive, born in Kentucky, father born in
Kentucky, mother born in Alabama, able to read write and speak English.

2) Elza V McGINNIS, grandson, white, male, born in July 1856, age 13,
single, born in Missouri, parents born in Kentucky, attended school, able to
read write and speak English.

but it should read as follows:

1) Elenor McGINNIS, head, white, female, born in Mar 1835, age 65, widowed,
bore 6 children - 4 still alive, born in Kentucky, father born in Kentucky,
mother born in Alabama, able to read write and speak English.

2) Elza V McGINNIS, grandson, white, male, born in July 1856, age 13,
single, born in Missouri, parents born in Kentucky, attended school, able to
read write and speak English.

This seems to happen only when I paste the information into the note the
first time.

Please see if you can replicate this error.

Thanks.

Dave

[LegacyUG] Web pages- Ancestor - shared events

2015-03-05 Thread Bernd Hornung
Using Windows 7 and Legacy build 8.0.0.459

I have an unusual phenomenon when I create an Ancestor web page. It
'throws' all shared events into one persons details. I have run this a
couple of times changing some settings but with the same results.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

Re: [LegacyUG] Any Way to Print Surname Summary Report with Selection of Records?

Thanks for taking the time to find that web page.

But the instructions are for Y-DNA (which is mostly male) or mt-DNA (which
is only female). I am looking for info for Autosomal DNA (which includes
everyone), so the instructions won't work for my situation. But I might be
able to alter them somehow to get the result I am looking for.

Nothing is online unless you sent the report to a web host. HTML is a
web page line format but the file Legacy creates is only on your hard

You can reset the line length yourself.

Everything on your computer and everything you use on your computer
has a default, which are the "factory" settings. You can pretty much
change those to whatever you want, so if the default line length is,
say, 60 characters, you can change that to 80 characters or whatever
you want.
