Legacy support. Shutdown the old email list until you can fix the unsubscribe
option. It just isn't working. The one on the new system is however the 100 so
emails are being generated by the old system. You are annoying some very good
customers and are in danger of being registered as a generator of spam.

[LegacyUG] Question about when this snafu first started

2016-02-22 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I'm just curious about one thing. Thinking back to a week or so ago, I
remember one or two messages were posted from somebody claiming there was an
email sent that asked him to verify his email address (or something like
that). I sort of remember support people answering back that it should be
ignored and that Millennia would never send out an email asking for
verification (I'm sure I got some the details screwed up).

But now, it appears those email verification requests may have been from the
initial configuration settings on the new server.or not. Just find it kind
of amusing that it might all have been true to begin with. Plausible
deniability !!

Just having fun. J

Re: [LegacyUG] New Mailing List Software and Servers

2016-02-22 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
There are none so blind as those that will not see.

I would attach a screen capture image of mail from the new server in the
past 24 hours but it would violate two rules: first, images are not allowed,
and second, the image would be so large that the mere file size could cause
its own complaints.

Looking beyond all the initial hiccups, everything will get sorted out
within the next day or two, I'm sure. And it's no big deal (at least for me)
that there has been a googolplex of messages. We all have a delete key.
Besides, this all reminds me of the initial hiccups when v8 was first rolled
out. :-)

The problem is that if the mailing list is broken, they can't send mail to
everyone to say that they are moving to a new server, and the new server will
send a "welcome" message to all "new" subscribers first, so the explanation
has to come second, but by the time people receive it, they've already got a
couple of dozen messages from people asking why they';ve got the welcome
message.

If the old server is broken, you CAN'T send a message to everyone saying it
is being moved to a new server until it is moved to the new server.

And yes, I hate messages that are sent as attachments, but the way to avoid
that is to set your mail software to send as plain text and not as HTML
(sometimes called "rich text").

Sorry, I somehow left-off the first paragraph. However Brian has already

though - you MUST use the email address you registered with originally or
this won't work. Below is what you will see when you go to the link I

To unsubscribe from Legacyusergroup, get a password reminder, or change your

TO EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!!

While most of us have simply been deleting all of the "bogus" messages we
have been receiving, there is a quick fix for getting your account setup
again the way you want it. Just go to the Legacy User Group List manager
webpage. Link is below:

.
http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com

Once there, if you don't see the Log in with a box for your email in it,
click on the "Log in" button and enter only your email address and then
click on the Log in button again. You'll get an error message at the top of
the page but don't worry about it. Then, click on the Password Reminder
button that is down the page a ways. You will probably get another error
message but again, don't worry about it. A short while late you should see
your password reminder message in your email with your "NEW" password. Go
back to the Legacy User Group list webpage and then log in with the password
that was in your email. That will get you back to where you can then change
your password and adjust your list settings to whatever you want them to be.
Mine had not changed so it appears only the password was changed with the
move to the new server.

Good luck,

Don

Which option(s) are we supposed to choose from these choices?

"A New page will open where you can ask for a password reminder, unsubscribe
from the list or enter your email address and password to edit your account
details and options.". Still need specific steps.

Delete the error ones
Block them if a non-subscriber in junk mail process and forget

[LegacyUG] Recovering/Resending Passwords

2016-02-22 Thread Brian/Support
For those who deleted the welcome message from the new LUG mailing list
and want to manage their account here is how you can have your password
resent to you:

Go to this page
http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com

near the bottom of the page (scroll down if needed) there is an entry
box where you can enter your email address, beside it is a box
"Unsubscribe or edit options" Enter your email address in the empty box
then click on the edit options.

A New page will open where you can ask for a password reminder,
unsubscribe from the list or enter your email address and password to
edit your account details and options.

By the way, for those who have been asking for a Digest option this new
mailing list manager does provide a Digest option.

I'd love to know the URL of the website - I presume that might have been in

I went to the other one suggested - definitely no "LOGIN" option so I
subscribed instead - promptly got told I was already subscribed . go figure!

TO EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!!

While most of us have simply been deleting all of the "bogus" messages we
have been receiving, there is a quick fix for getting your account setup
again the way you want it. Just go to the Legacy User Group List manager
webpage. Link is below:

*
http://legacyusers.com/mailman/listinfo/legacyusergroup_legacyusers.com

Good luck,

Don

I think it would have been better if they had sent all of us a private

We have had to migrate our old mailing lists to a new server and software.
As part of that migration all users had to be resubscribed to the "New"
List. Everyone on the List will receive a welcome message.

The new list server and software requires a password for you to manage your
list subscription. A default password is included in your welcome message
along with the link to your new list account management page where you can
select list options.

Re: [LegacyUG] New Mailing List Software and Servers

2016-02-22 Thread Don McRoberts

Good luck,

Don

2016-02-22 Thread William Boswell
I totally agree. A notice should have been sent to the list members and not
just the Facebook page which not everybody uses. I am very suspicious of
the type of email I first received because it had all the works of spam or a
virus with the way it was written and the password that had to be used. It
also came from somebody I never heard of. I guess they were trying to keep
spammers from striking again.

I think it would have been better if they had sent all of us a private
message instead of to the list. With all of the spam messages to the list
recently why wouldn't we suspect this was just another one.

I'm going to try to unsubscribe from the old list.

I got one, as well. Whenever I receive one like this, I automatically
delete it, unless I recognize who sent it, etc. It's just not worth

It also appears that the archive is only sortable by subject, author or
thread. I could not find a way to search by keyword, etc. And if this works
the way another mailing list I am on using the same software, you need to go
month by month to find anything. I think this is a real problem.

you never click on links in unsolicited emails, period, full stop.  So
suggestions that we could have stopped this via that method are somewhat naive.
Legacy blew it right off the bat with a whole series of links that we were
being encouraged to activate.
I agree with Annie - if they obviously had all our email addresses, they might
have sent us a note beforehand alerting us to what was going on before
atomatically subscribing us to something we were not expecting and perhaps do
not want.  We should have had an "opt in" mechanism rather than having to find
a way to opt out.
Facebook is not the centre of the world - yet anyway - so if that is their
"alert system", it fails badly in my book.  I expect better of an established
corporation.  I've used Legacy for 20 years now - I've never experienced this
amateurism.

Hi Annie and everyone else wondering what is going on...

Legacy encountered problems with all of its mailing lists a few days
ago, and there has been no list mail for five or six days until the past
hour or so.

If you belong to the Legacy User Group on Facebook*, you will have seen
it mentioned there.

* I am in no way saying that everyone should join this group. It is
there for those who wish to take part, just as the mailing lists are
there for those people who want to use those. It just happens that I
use both so I know the mailing list problem came up there.

Clearly, this new mailing list using Mailman is the solution that Legacy
have found, to set up a new list. There will be teething problems while
we all get used to the new list and Legacy discover the implications of
the settings they've chosen for it. It's a big task on both sides.

I suspect, from some of the posts I've seen, that Legacy had to resort
to an old list of LUG members to get going again. If you don't want to
receive the mail at all, feel free to unsubscribe. If you want to be
here, but the mail sent to a different address, change the address.

Instructions on how to manage your own subscriptions (which is new to
this mailing list), are given in the email you received with the subject
"Welcome to the "Legacyusergroup" mailing list".

If you wish, you should** be able unsubscribe from this mailing list by
sending an email _from the address that is receiving the mail_, to
legacyusergroup-requ...@legacyusers.com with the single word
/unsubscribe/ in either the body or the subject line.

** I've not tested this command, but Mailman is also used for the
Rootsweb mailing lists, and it works there.

Hope this helps everyone to deal to the situation calmly. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

I'm afraid there is too much uncertainty in the networld to feel easy

I don't remember ever signing up for a mailing list -- please remove my name
at this time.

Perhaps a better explanation might have been in order

I just received a suspicious welcome message to this list such as something
I would get for joining only I'm already subscribed. I thought perhaps I
somehow was unsubscribed until I saw the suspicious password listed at the
bottom of the message. It is full of links.

I'm not forwarding it to the list, but if the moderators want to see it I
will send it to them. I don't want to be responsible for more spam
propagated to the list.

[LegacyUG] New Mailing List Software and Servers

2016-02-22 Thread Brian/Support via Legacyusergroup
--- Begin Message ---
We have had to migrate our old mailing lists to a new server and
software. As part of that migration all users had to be resubscribed to
the "New" List. Everyone on the List will receive a welcome message.

The new list server and software requires a password for you to manage
your list subscription. A default password is included in your welcome
message along with the link to your new list account management page
where you can select list options.

I just received three more including my own message and all three had
attachments which I did not include with my message. Very strange.

I wonder if the mailing list has been hacked. At first I thought my own
system had been hacked. The original message I received was full of lies
saying that we had to verify our subscription each month which is a giant
red flag.

Since I flagged the first message to go to the junk folder that's where the
rest of them went. I also haven't received any list emails today.

Very strange, indeed. No messages here on in the archives since Feb 16th, and
then this. What is going on? Is LUG dead?
