Yes, it is possible to transfer two or more PAF file directly to Legacy. I've
just tried it and it worked. I was thinking of partial files, where if
someone sends you a PAF file and you import it to Legacy, and then if they
make changes and add to it,. and you want to import only the changed records,
then you have to export from PAF to Gedcom, and then import the Gedcom, but
to import whole files, no, you don't need to use Gedcom.

That's what I've just tried. You don't need to convert each to Legacy. If you
import whole files, you can import each one into the same Legacy file.

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM import

2017-02-19 Thread Cathy Pinner

Michele,
I don't use the Geo Location Database that you can download.
Is that what you mean?

It includes map co-ordinates for the locations it covers but you have to
learn to use it and it works best if you learn to make Alt files for it,
I understand. I haven't bothered as it's not good for locations in my
areas of interest.

I just use the Bing map in the Master Location list.
For modern locations it's very good in my experience provided you are
entering the country as part of your location. Others have different
experience and prefer Google Maps which aren't available with Legacy.

For historical locations any modern mapping system needs help.

I use a whole variety of maps both online and off when researching
locations and use the information to decide where to place the pin on
the Bing map in Legacy.

You can correct the placement of a pin by right clicking on the right
place on the map.

First you may need to click the Geo-code button at the top of the screen
and choose Do not auto geocode the current location. This is
particularly important if you use other already mapped locations to get
close to the right location. When you re-highlight the location you are
mapping, if you haven't checked that option, the map flies back to the
wrong place.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

If you are transferring from Legacy on one computer to Legacy on
another you shouldn't be using a Gedcom but either the Legacy data
files, or more conveniently a Legacy backup file which you restore.

If you are wanting to combine several PAF files into the one
Legacy file then you'd convert each to Legacy and then import one
Legacy file into another.

If often transferred files from PAF to Rootsmagic via Gedcom, and have never
encountered that problem.

When you export from PAF, which Gedcom format to you choose?

Re: [LegacyUG] GEDCOM import

2017-02-19 Thread Cathy Pinner

Michele,
Legacy has direct import for PAF.
See in Legacy: File - Import and choose your PAF version.

That may work better than going via Gedcom from PAF to Legacy.

M/F choices are greyed out in Legacy 8 when someone is married.
In Legacy 9 you can enter same sex relationships so they are no longer
greyed out.
If they are the greyed out and the wrong gender, if both partners have
the wrong gender you can use Edit - Swap husband and wife to correct
unless one of them has more than one partner. In that case you have to
unlink, change gender while they are "single" and relink them.

Living choice is greyed out when the entered dates determine the result.
If anything at all is entered in the death or burial fields, they will
be marked as Living - NO.

If you don't want to start again with direct import, then do a File -
File Maintenance - Check/Repair which may fix some gender issues.

The alive or deceased choice is also greyed out.

I also downloaded the map add-on, but that gives bizarre results.
Eg. I have no one from either tree living in Nth America, but a red
flag/marker often shows locations there. How to rectify?

Thank you in advance

You might unlink yourself from your mother and father. Go to your sister and
do advanced Tag 1 (clear all tags prior) on Decedents and all everyone up and

First create to a temporary file, and work on the temporary.
I go to Advanced Tagging. I tagged the line I want to output with Tag 1,
and named it Sister.
You will see the variety of types of tagging. Practice the different types
of family, Ancestors, descendants. Not do Everyone or Entire family line,
you will have to start over again.
Go to Export and click on Record Selection. Pick Tag 1. Remember to
Select the Private.
BUT - If the Tagged family is connected to your other families way back in
history, they could be tagged as well.
After you Import the Temporary you can check if you over or under tagged
families.

This is all I know. If there is a better way please let me know.
