Re: [LegacyUG] gedcom from Legacy to ancestry

2018-04-23 Thread Chris Hill

Hi Brian

Yes, you are correct. I was assuming that the entries in the focus
group were individually selectable rather than a collection of multiple
selections.

On that basis, I would add item 4a as follows.

4a. Within the Focus Group, remove all of the current entries.

Chris,

Your step 8 has an error. If there are multiple lines in a focus group
all the people selected by all the lines will be included in the group.
It works this way so you can assemble a focus group from many different
criteria such as including the descendants of more than one person.
That may explain your problem you mention later with too many people
included in your focus groups.

After sending my earlier response I tested the export of a GEDCOM using
a focus group. In my file of 6503 people and 2182 families when I
exported the descendants of my 3rd Great Grandfather only 1768 people
and 615 families were exported. Using my maternal Grandfather as the
starting person only 353 people and 135 families were exported. When
the focus group had both my 3rd great grandfather and my grandfather
the export included 2004 individuals and 704 families. That confirms,
to me anyway, that the focus group does work correctly.

It SHOULD work like this:

1. Export to GEDCOM and select the Ancestry target.
2. Make any options on the main display and on Customise regarding
which items you want to include.

3. Use the Privacy Options and exclude living persons.
4. On Record Selection, choose the Selected records from a Focus Group
and click on the Edit Focus Group button.
5. Within the Focus Group, click on the Add an Individual and
Descendants button.
6. Change the selected person to the oldest person, ie Jeremiah
VAUGHAN.

7. Enable the Descendants option, NOT the Entire Descendent line.
8. Save the group and ensure that it is selected in the Focus Group,
then click on OK..
9. Ensure that the Focus Group option is selected in Record selection
and click on Close.

10. The Export should show Focus Group records.
11. Click on Start Export.

That should extract all of the non-living persons in the tree who
are descendants of your ancestor, and presumably also their spouses.

BUT, as far as I can tell, it does not actually work and extracts
the entire tree, so option 7 does not work.

I have raised this as a Problem Report.

You should always clear any existing focus group before adding or
building a new group of people for including in a report, GEDCOM export
etc. Legacy does allow you to save up to 9 focus groups so if you
frequently need a group based on the same set of criteria you can use
the save button on the focus group screen to save the set of criteria
for reuse.

Re: [LegacyUG] obituaries

2018-04-23 Thread Michele Lewis
I am jumping into the conversation late. Here is what I do...

I create an Obituary event.
I transcribe the entire obituary into the event notes.
I attach a scan of the entire newspaper page to the event (if I only have a
clipping found in someone's possession and I can't find the newspaper page
then I will scan just the clipping)
I create a source citation.
I extract/enter all of the evidence contained in the obit and attached the
citation to it.

Whether you do the full obit or not, it helps to at least have the
reference. Personally I like the full obit to show in reports. Many years
from now it may not be available, even in a scanned version if it is an old
one. Leonard

If you mean your message about creating a Gedcom, it appeared here, but
no one has responded.

I believe that as you are using Gmail your own message will not appear
in your inbox, only replies to it - if any. Unless you have subscribed
to the group with 2 different e-mail addresses any messages from your
"other" address will never arrive.

I, for one, did not try to answer your query because I wasn't really
sure what your problem was. You say you were confused by different
suggestions, so perhaps people thought it was not a good idea to offer
even more suggestions! It would help if you explained exactly what is
confusing you, what you have tried to do and how it didn't work.

If your message was not the one I referred to, but one on the topic of
"Obituaries" then fair enough, but otherwise please do not "hi-jack" a
thread to introduce a new topic, but open a new thread by using "Write"
instead of "Follow-up" or "Reply".

Jean,

I use an obituary event as I like the transcribed obit to be included in
reports where events and notes are allowed.

I edited my event definition sentences to read differently, depending on how
much source information I know.

For instance, if I know the date and location of the publication, my
obituary event in my report might begin with the sentence:

... Jack was remembered in an obituary, published 15 Oct 2003, in Danville,
Yell County,
Arkansas

And the obituary transcription follows

... [FirstName] was remembered in an obituary, published [onDate], in
[Place][Sources][CR][CR][Notes][CR]

Occasionally, I come across a newspaper clipping of an obituary that someone
has shared but they don't include source information, so I've no idea what
newspaper printed the obituary. In this instance, my beginning obituary
event sentence reads:

... he (or she or first name) was remembered in an obituary.

And the obituary transcription follows

... [HeShe] was remembered in an
obituary[Sources][CR][CR][Notes][CR]

In all instances, I bold this first sentence, which helps to set it off in
the report.

I don't add the transcription of the obituary to the source detail since it
is included in the report.

I am having a hard time deciding where or how to enter obituaries. Years
ago I started putting them on the bottom half of the medical notes. Then I
moved to burial notes, along with FAG info. When Geoff or someone mentioned
putting obits as an event, so you could make a report of all people who had
obit, I started putting them as events, which I still do. Now I am working
on sourcing them (I do not use sourcewriter) and have entered some in the
detail of the source. I am confused. What is the best way of entering
obits, so you can have them appear on reports? Is there a webinar
specifically covering this? Thanks for suggestions.
