Re: [LegacyUG] Too many FH files everywhere - ? need to put them together
Hi Valerie If you are talking about your databases, pick the one you use or update most. Put it in a new Legacy database with a new name so you can distinguish it from the old one. Then you will have to do as you thought and get the information from the online trees one at a time and merge them. To prevent all this happening again, I suggest you only work on or update the one on your Legacy file on the computer. If you wish to put them online do it from your master database. Don't change or add anything anywhere else. Re: [LegacyUG] Too many FH files everywhere - ? need to put them together
Hi Valerie, If you are taking about storing all your electronic files for a given person together, I would use the Legacy MRIN number as the key. I created a folder on my computer using the "MRIN husbname - wifename" as the folder name. For example, "12345 JohnBrown-JaneDoe" . Documents that are specific for a date (like birth, death, marriage) I put the date at the beginning of the file name. For example, "1902-06-05 JohnBrown-birth record" When I do this, all the records sort automatically in chronological order and I can immediately see if I already have a birth record or census record. If I am looking for one of the John Browns, I can find them in my Legacy database and verify it is the correct person. Then using the MRIN, I can go right to the folder where all his documents are stored. You could use this method to go to one website and copy the files from that site to your computer and put it into the correct person's folder. Once finished with one website, move on to the second website. If this is not what you're talking about, feel free to explain again.
