Digests are a nuisance. People respond to a message and don't dont trim
post. Therefore, the entire digest gets sent to the entire list. After
several replies you've got multiple copies of the digest getting sent every
time and one hot mess. And even if someone does properly trim, it breaks
the message threading for everyone.

I noticed you have a Gmail accountl. The easiest solution is to create a
filter that puts all the list's messages under the same label (folder). You
can tell it to bypass the inbox so it keeps the inbox uncluttered.

Unless you're a techie and just have to have to the latest of everything,
I'd say waiting to upgrade is good advise for *any* software. No matter how
much a company tests, you never know what's going to crop up in a
large-scale roll-out.

I order articles via ILL quite often. They used to send photocopies. Now
they scan it to a pdf. If you don't need to see the original, it's great.

You seem to be of the opinion that if there were only a mailing list the FB
folks would post here instead. Just as you don't want to use FB, they may
not want to use a mailing list. I agree that FB isn't ideal for discussions
lists. On the other hand, I despise forums and wouldn't use one if it were

Re: [LegacyUG] New Email Process

2016-03-21 Thread Charlene C
I maintain two lists on Mailman and haven't had a problem in a while.
Here's the standard reply I would post when someone did have a question
about it.

This discussion still comes comes up every once in a while, but it's not
new. Back in April, 2014, Yahoo changed the way their email works and it
broke mailing lists all over the place. Search for "yahoo broke mailing
lists" and you'll get plenty of hits. And it doesn't just affect Yahoo.com
address; they also host aol.com and *lots* of others.

Here's an explanation for those into that sort of thing:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2141120/yahoo-email-antispoofing-policy-
breaks-mailing-lists.html

For Gmail (and probably other services) you can create a filter with the
option to "never send to spam".

[LegacyUG] OT : general genealogy mailing lists

Sorry for the slightly off-topic request. Can you recommend any general
genealogy mailing lists? (As opposed to the many lists I'm finding that
focus on a particular surname/family or cultural group.) I know there are
lots of Facebook groups, but I find them a poor substitute for mailing
lists.

Thanks for reminding folks. I've been in IT for over 30 years; I'm paranoid
about this. I always made a local backup before doing any sort of installs
or upgrades. I also automagically backup all my data to the cloud; really
convenient. Belts and suspenders.

[LegacyUG] Seeking suggestions for sorting through a database mess

2015-10-15 Thread Charlene C
(Using v 7.5)

I was working on our family history and had a little under 800 people in
the database. Then I got busy building our new house (as the general
contractor) and my Dad offered to work on it. This was great because he was
living in Maine (I'm in Texas) where most of the older folks are and my
mother can still speak French (many of them don't speak English). I figured
he'd gather family stories from them and make a few updates to the database.

At the time we didn't know about the collaboration features in Legacy so I
just sent my father the database files. I'm now ready to resume the project
so he sent me his revised version. There's now 12,500+ people in the
database. He's apparently been incorporating whatever info he's found on
the internet and hasn't vetted any of it. Yikes! Of course, I don't want to
hurt his feelings so I just thanked him for his work.

I now have two copies of the database: the original I sent to him and the
revised one he sent back. I was originally thinking I could tag each event
as "need to verify," but you can only tag people or marriages. Tagging a
person doesn't work because I may have verified the birth, but not the
death, etc.

Is it easier to just start a new file? I'm open to any suggestions on
methods of sorting through this mess.

Thanks,
Charlene

[LegacyUG] Re: Seeking suggestions for sorting through a database mess

2015-10-15 Thread Charlene C
Now to further complicate matters

Dad had sent me his revised data files. Then he upgraded to v8 and I
didn't. Then he kept updating the database with legitimate data. He's snail
mailed a data DVD to me.

I don't plan to update Legacy at the moment, but obviously I'll need v8 to
open his new files. So the question is: Can I have two versions of the
software running on the same machine? If so, can they both be open at the
same time (using different data files)? Otherwise I can try installing v8
on my laptop which doesn't currently have Legacy, but it's getting old and
the Windows 10 upgrade is causing problems.

Thanks,
Charlene

I always mark these emails as 'not spam', and live in hope that one day
the system will catch up and start recognising list mail for what it is.
I'm not holding my breath, though, I don't expect a quick fix.

Basically Yahoo broke the way internet lists work with their DMARC
solution. The emails going to the Spam folder are from Yahoo or
Yahoo-owned domains (yahoo.com, att.net, sbcglobal.net, etc.). The
problem needs to be fixed at the list software level. All the other
lists I'm on have now fixed the problem or come up with a temporary
workaround until the a permanent fix is found. I'm not holding my

Agreed but it can be difficult when you don't know the maiden name. I
started by leaving it blank and then ended up with a collection of forenames
at the front of my index. So I now go with the married surname and a title
suffix of spouse. These have the advantage of showing in the index in a more
appropriate place and also it is easy to produce a list by searching for
 suffix spouse
